Wheelchair Friendly

I was wondering if anyone else has used the wheelchairs at Disney world and how it was? I have hip dysplasia that I am 4 weeks away from having surgery. My doctor suggest a wheelchair due to saving what little cartliage I have left between my leg and hip. I don't look like I need one, but was wondering if anyone has dealt with this before and how it was? Just a little apprehensive. There is no way I can walk around for 6 days.
Thanks!

Wheel chairs at the parks are at a first come/first serve basis. We needed to rent one a few years ago when my niece sprained her ankle mid-trip. If the policy hasn't changed, we were able to rent a chair at the MK, hold onto our receipt then later that day we park-hopped to the AK and got another chair without having to pay again. You might want to consider renting a chair for the duration of your trip from an offsite rental company. There are many in the Orlando area that rent chairs and ECV's, deliver them to your resort and then you leave them with Baggage Services at the end of your vacation. Just Google "orlando area wheel chair rental" and you should get many results. It's not just the walking around the parks that is hard. Some of the resorts are so spread out that getting around them can be just as difficult. With a chair rented for the whole trip, you won't have to deal with waiting in line at the park for rental and return.

I had to rent a ecv when I broke my ankle five days before I was going one time. I rented mine through Walker and had no problems getting it on and off the buses, it's like parrallel parking a car and once you have it down you're fine. You should know that most resorts are very spread out so it would be helpful to have the chair or ecv there too. Unless you have someone who is very strong to push you, I'd recommend the ecv it's better on everyone.

Welcome to WDWmagic!! I'm not trying to be harsh, but you only will need to post your questions in one area or another. Believe me, you will get more answers than you ever wanted!! Please ask your questions away. This site was very helpful when I was starting to plan my last trip, even though I'm a seasoned vet.

We just returned Monday, and I can tell you that the ECVs abound. I also had to be pushed around the MK one day b/c of knee issues (3 knee surgeries myself!). I would definitely recommend renting an ECV off property for the best rates, and since they will deliver, that's a super convenience.

Those who suggested you rent one off site are giving you the best advice. You can rent them at the parks, but keep in mind you cannot take it from park to park. If you want a push one you'll have no problem, but if you want ECV, you may get it at the first park you go to, but if you park hop later in the day there may not be one available in the next park.
