Whats up with the "MGM"

Okay what is up with the "MGM" and Disney?

I have noticed lately that they don't call it Disney MGM Studios. On my new vacation video it just calls it The Disney Studios, but I know and have it on tape that during this years Christmas parade at the Magic Kingdom Regis referred to it as the Disney MGM Studios. I know that they took the "MGM" off of the arch way, but if it is indeed not "MGM" anymore why would they allow it to be called that on national TV or is it because it was live? Furthermore does anyone know why they dropped the "MGM" anyway?

I'm going to go watch my tape I think they even had a caption on the lower part that said MGM. I'll get back to ya on that one.

first of all, the Christmas Parade isn't on tv live. It was taped on December 7th I believe. You can search for a thread on it because I know I read it somewhere. Also, the MGM part is still on the main entrance sign and they have never said MGM on the vacation planning videos I think because of international copyrights.:D

I don't know what the current reasoning is but I do know that they called it Disney-MGM in the videos back in 93. Unless something major has changed I don't really understand the modification of the studios name in certin places and formats

Disney does not have unlimited use of the "MGM" branding of the park.

I heard a rumor that Disney is negotiating with MGM on the name usage for the future. It might be possible that the "MGM" name could be permanently removed if it's too expensive.

They wan't people to get used to seeing "Disney Studios" instead of "MGM".

I myself don't really care eaither way. However, I do think the park has the stregenth to stand on it's own now without the "MGM" name recognition.

If dropping the name saves them enough money to build a new attraction, I'm all for it.

Disney signed an agreement with MGM back when the park was being constructed. It gives Disney use of the MGM name, logo and movies for the rides and other licensed items in the park. The agreement ends in 2004. As of now, one would guess why they are phasing out MGM is because the agreement is going to end and as of now, no replacement is in place so Disney is trying to get folks to call it the Disney Studios as opposed to the Disney-MGM Studios.

Hope that helps

We can only guess what will happen in 2004 - with the GMR, with the name itself, with the logo, with the earful tower, with the Entrance Plaza, with the... *drabbles aimlessly on and on*
