I've heard a popular ride at Disneyland is the Matterhorn bobsleds. What exactly is it? I've never seen it before since I've never been to WDW. Do guests tend to like it? Are there animatronics or anything? Thanks for any info!

All of the Disneyland Scource's milti media is off-line and the sight will be closing soon. It's so sad because it was one of my favorites.:(

Anyway, the Matterhorn is a roller coaster ride where you ride bobsleds on a turbulent journey though a giant replica of the Matterhorn Mountain. Walt Disney personally supervised the project of the the Matterhorn and was completed some time in the 60s. It was the first roller coaster to run on tubular steel tracks and to have more than 1 viecle on the track at the same time. Later, it was renovated to be more thrilling, and they added a few encounters with an AA abonidable snowman. The ride twists and turns through ice caverns, caves, and into a splash down in a alpine lake. It is currently one of the most popular rides in DL.

Nooo!!! :( Why is it closing and when? That was my favorite Disneyland site.

Let me add that there are two tracks on the ride, giving you two different experiences. Not much of a difference on either side, but it's nice to alternate which track you ride just to keep the ride fresh.

I personally find the Tomorrowland side to be a little "wilder" than the Fantasyland side. And there's a nice little drop (where the tracks meet, maybe 2/3 of the way down?) that you get on the Tomorrowland side only. Tomorrowland's side at least seems to be faster, even though they're probably going just about the same speed.

I will say one thing for the Matterhorn though... never eat a big lunch right before you go on it! :hurl:

Of course! I was waiting in line for the Matterhorn once with a friend, and we were talking about the basketball court... and these other AP holders ahead of us in line INSISTED that we were lying and there was no such thing. Imagine their surprise when we asked the CM at the front of the line and the CM confirmed it. Sometimes it's so hard not to say "I told you so." ;)

Basketball court is a bit of an exageration - a backbaord and hoop is better. I have picture in the trivia section - Disneyland where is this thread.

They also moved it from Tomorrowland to Fantasyland. Seriously. It wasn't moved physically of course, but Disneyland guidebooks through 1970 listed the Matterhorn as part of Tomorrowland. By 1972, the Matterhorn Bobsleds attraction listing had moved to Fantasyland. Read more about it here. There's some pretty cool facts on that site.

I remember the old Matterhorn quite well and the rehab that took it from 'contruction site' look to the glacial look. It was a BIG improvement.

But I do miss the Skyway.
