What's the deal with Hollywood Studios

From my point of view, I agree with the original post. I, too, think and feel like the park is missing something. My opinion is that they are missing the WORKING STUDIO part. I think that when that was in play, it made the park a favorite or more of a favorite with park goers. I do not want to waste $100 just to enjoy that park for an entire day...to me its not worth it, until it has a major rehab like DCA had! I am adding a hopper to my ticket so I can go to all 4 parks, $57 for access for 2 parks is a great deal!!!!! I cannot wait...only 15 days until WDW! :)

I agree with you about the working studio part. It's like the life just went out of the park when it became static. It lost the vibrancy and the excitement of feeling like you were in the middle of the movies. The backlot tour has been so weakened that they should just take it off life support and the shows are so stale after almost 25 years that we skip most of them now. If it was like this when I go to the theater to see a movie today I would ask for a refund.

Personally, I love Hollywood Studios. It's my favorite park, but that's also because I can go there, ride Star Tours, Tower of Terror, and Rock 'n Rollercoaster all day and be perfectly happy. I can't really day why you think it's gone downhill since I'm rather young and don't remember the "hayday", but here are a few ideas:

1. Used to have a working studio, making the animation tour more interesting.
2. I recall my father saying the backlot tour used to be longer
3. Monster Sound show is gone. My parents used to love it.
4. I think New York Street used to be more of a novelty.

Maybe 4 explains most of it, that the novelty has just worn off. I'd like to see more rides. I don't feel the need for them to bring Carsland to DHS, but I would like to see a Star Wars themed area (please see username for reason).

I used to love this park, it was the first one I ever went to outside of England and I was mesmerised. I love some of the rides there. Tower of Terror, the Indiana Jones show, The Backlot, The Great Movie ride, Rock n' Rollercoaster are all classics. Star Tours as well, though I wish they'd kept the original. And the theme and atmosphere of the park was great, similar to Universal. I really love the 50s Hollywood thing they've got goin on.

It's a real shame to see it getting a good bashing on here.

What exactly has changed in the last 5 years or so? I was disappointed when they changed the name, but I can't remember much difference in the actual park at the time. I first went around 99 and my last visit was in 2010. Were the changes in that period or has it let itself go in the last couple of years?

What specifically about the Backlot Tour is different?

You don't have the memories on the Backlot Tour as I do. I first saw it in 1991. The Backlot Tour was different than you first saw it in 1999. I saw the original Backlot Tour. The Original Backlot Tour was much longer. There was more changes to the Backlot tour from 1999 to 2010.

What happened was Soundstage 2 and 3 was turned into Toy Story Midway Mania. Soundstage 2 closed in 2001 and was originally changed to Who Wants to be a Millionaire.

The Two Sound Stages was part of the tour. In 2003, Residential Street was walled off from the tour and demolished. That turned into Lights, Motor, Action.

What also happened was the area of One Man's Dream, and the Legend of Captain Jack Sparrow was once of part of the Backlot Tour. Where Voyage of the Little Mermaid is also was part of the Backlot Tour before Voyage opened in 1994. The areas I mentioned actually was soundstages for the Backlot Tour at one time.

perhaps this is part of the problem. if you gave me all the drastic changes to MGM going back to 2000 I coul give you three. TSMM, which based on the lines must be the favorite attraction I'm guessing (when I last went to ride it all the lights died except mr potato heads eyes ...... really creepy in an otherwise entirely pitch black room btw) the star tours makeover, and A giant hat we can buy kiosk merch under. ( and at the time it seemed like they were just doing it for the sake of doing it a la lets build a giant worthless arm and wand to ruin photos of spaceship earth into apparently "epcot arm" the key being they had the brains to take that down)

in between we had a lot of filler. x parade left so y parade took its place. one dated movies props walk through left and a slightly less outdated movies props took its place. I'm not saying any are bad, but none really stood out from the pack. perhaps the most unique parade was the stars and motor cars specifically for the interest car themes.

that said. what is happening in MK? oh a whole new expansion and lands, brand new restaurants new rides and shows, ( and I mean new, not filling in for something else we had only 2 years ago.

Epcot- constantly rotating new exhibits in each of its festivals, multiple festivals constantly each year with new parts and additions to them yearly, dramatic overhaul in visuals and atmosphere of test track, for better or worse. also unique concerts every year as well, often times free.

animal kingdom- we are in an early stage of bringing in an entire new land in with Avatar planned to be a large addition to the park

Studios - we had a big update to star tours last year. that's all I know. a new captain jack experience that isn't bad assuming you get the proper view and don't get stuck only able to see a real ship obscure most o the compelling aspects of the attraction meant to be seen by everyone. I haven't seen it yet but that's the only thing I hear that is not contested back and forth as being great or horrid, regardless of how good or bad it really is you can get a worthless spot where you will not see enough to know at times. so we have a direction in every single park with an idea of where we are moving except here. it's the only park of the 4 where I have no idea what the plan is if there is one at all. if there is one, it must be great to keep it so hidden.

and before we go too deep into the "bashing" aspect. I should say this. I love the park, i have fun all the time. but the topic deals with the park being compared to other as to a feeling of the park "missing something or slipping in some way" in this case the parks have to be compare for differences. it makes sense to exain how you have just as much fun at them all if you think none are lacking, of however you feel any one park is lacking or missing an area regardless of which park, it doesn't make sense to go over all the similarities you enjoy. it's not "hate" or "bashing" please understand that many of us enjoy the park a great deal but that is not the topic. if you had another thread asking for our favorite parts of studios my list would be long. ( heck I still love the muppet vision show and probably end up going on several times, even being so lame as to point out that when you see the "key under mat" sign you can lift the mat ad fun a key really is there hidden under it! ) and if you asked what would make the park the best I would have different points, most involving suggestions that revolve around Bon Jovi most likely (who am I kidding guaranteed) but it simply is not the subject matter here. so ends my long rant for this weekend. Its starting to seem on many threads that if we point out any issues, or problems without praising everything else, it is implied we hate everything about it. this is almost NEVER the case.

edit: I see a ton of spelling errors and I think I should also point out 15 hours of work and iPhone and fat fingers ( and probably Aerosmith) are all out to get me

It is my absolute least favorite park. They could remove it all together for all I care. Its thrown together so haphazardly, it has the most random rides. The next time we go, we plan on skipping it all together unless we get park hoppers, we might drop by it to eat at the 50's Diner or Sci Fi, but thats it.

DHS used to be awesome. Then the neighborhood went down the drain. Tsk, tsk, they let everybody in nowadays.

For me I don't think it's necessarily gone downhill I just think it was never on the top of my list anyway. I know people will disagree but I think that there is no theming to the park at all. I don't feel different whether I'm on Sunset Blvd or Streets of America. You see the same basic view when you exit Muppets or TSMM - oh hey, a brick building...cool.

I wish I had ideas of what would make that better but I don't I just know that at MK I know when I'm in Adventureland or Tommorowland, at Epcot I can tell when I'm in Italy or France and at AK I can tell when I'm in Asia or Africa. At DHS I'm on a paved street surrounding by brick buildings and the streets seem to have a disconnect that makes it not nearly as easy to navigate as the other parks.

EDIT: and keep in mind that ToT and RnR Starring Aerosmith are two of my favourites at WDW. Of course I can scratch one off the list if they ever put Bon Jovi in...the Nickelback of the US.

I wasn't having a go with the 'bashing' comment. But I've only been reading this site for about a week and one thing I've noticed is DHS does get a lot of criticism, some people have basically called it crap. Personally I'm not sure where they are coming from, but that's their opinion. Maybe a lot of the criticisms are valid, tbf I haven't been in almost 3 years so I can't say they are wrong.

By the sounds of it a lot of people are harking back to the days of the early 90s which is before I started going. There was a time when it was probably my favourite park, so I hope it's as good as I remember it if I ever go again. I always loved the Backlot Tour even if it was much better before I ever went on it.

Unless your new to the park, or for some odd reason feel the need to wait 2 plus forever hours in line for Toy Story Mania, the three biggest draws to the park pretty much are TOT, Rock 'N' Rollercoaster, and Fantasmic, and all 3 are at the front end of the park, in the same area, first right off of the main drag when you come in....some people may have other attractions, restaurants, or atmosphere they like, but it's half day park at best at this point.

I truly hate knocking anything to do with the parks, but for the love of God, Hollywood Studios needs some help. It perplexes me that Disney is investing so much in Disney Springs and Avatarland in AK (does anyone still believe this is happening...). Yet the redheaded stepchild that is Hollywood Studios gets no love. Disney has SOO MANY properties at their disposal that would work at this park and what has it gotten in the past few years?

2 Years ago...Star Tours: The Adventure Continues

Cmon, not even a Muppet's refresh? Throwing Lightning McQueen in Lights, Motors, etc doesn't count. You have all those Marvel properties, Lucasfilm properties, Henson properties, and nothing. Almost doesn't seem fair.
Not only that, you've got attractions that sooner rather than later are going to be out of style...I'm looking at you American Idol Experience.

While I'm at it, can Universe of Energy and Imagination Pavilion gets some TLC, please?

Hoping someone with WDI is listening/reading.

I like the park, but I do wish they did more with the city streets part and near the backlot. It can have a ghost town feel to it there. I prefer that though to the constant barrage of parades MK does where you can't move around.

I can't do HS anymore. It used to be okay, but... These days to me, it's a bunch of shops and eateries with a few attractions (mostly for kids) thrown in. It's not even a half day park anymore. This last trip I didn't go at all... And don't see myself returning any time soon. Sorry.

HS needs some serious attention; it needs quality attractions - not this Jack Sparrow nonsense. I think they should do a DCA style reboot. Shut it down and go nuts for a while.

They should close HS and wait until the poll results are in from WDWMagic before deciding what to do with it.
Would they ever do this???? I've wanted to start a thread with this topic but I just haven't invested the time in figuring out how to start one. Rumors of shows closing, the Pixar Pals Parade going away, talk of Star Wars Land and Cars Land opening someday, new entrances, retheming everything, making the Earful Tower the parks icon again, etc..... Would it make economic sense to close a park for one to two years to redo everything and open new vs having a park under major construction for more time like Fantasyland? They would loose money, but for a shorter time than five years worth of refurbishing and adding new areas would take. Guess I'll learn how to start a thread tonight.

The majority may disagree with me, but the only reason I still go to DHS is for Sunset Blvd. I used to like Star Tours, but that new safety robot has a bad impression on me, American Idol is nothing new and the show itself is falling in regards to rankings. Muppets was at one point good, but its extremely outdated, LSM gets old fast, Backlot Tour is laughable and I was never for TSM. ToT and RnRCSA appear to be lasting the test of time, where you could strip the tower back to one drop and it still be memorable simply because of the story. I personally would not be dissapointed if they killed off DHS once and for all.

Surely it depends how often you go? For example I'd still do all the things I did there a few years ago and that always took a whole day. If you go quite a lot maybe you'd be bored with some of the things but for people like me who would just be on holiday, I'd still go on The Backlot, the Great Movie Ride, watch the two stunt shows, Star Tours, The Walt Disney walkthrough thingy.....

Really? You wouldn't be sad to see Tower of Terror and Rock 'n Rollercoaster go? Personally I think the park deserves it's existence for those two ride alone.

I realise thepark may have flaws and may need some serious work as has been suggested here, but I'd be absolutely gutted if it went. There's as many classic attractions there as most of the parks.
