What's scary about a roller-coaster?

So many people say "Try it once and you'll be fine." Sometimes it isn't so easy. I'm not so much afraid of roller coasters as I am worried about the motion sickness I get from drops. 10 years ago I couldn't ride Big Thunder without getting sick. Now I can handle more, but there are still rides that make me sick and I know what my limits are.

Sure I'll be glad to try it once.... but I'll get a migraine headache. Then after I :hurl: I'll be fine!:D

At the age of 35, the only "roller coaster" I've been on is the one at Sesame Place (which is just as tame as it sounds) in Bucks County, PA (and that's only because my 3 year old really wanted to ride). I nearly died of fright. I'm not a big believer in the unnecessary facing of fears. Fear of flying, I can confront. Going on a coaster just to prove I can? No way. Don't even need to analyze it.

However..I ALWAYS ride Splash Mountain, even though I hate the drop...go figure.

No kidding, because Splash Mountain's drops are basically roller-coasters, but instead of coasting into another curve or drop, you brake into water.

The intimidation factor and the anticipation are just too much for some people to handle. Kinda like good Vietnamese food, or that hot chick across the bar- rarely is it about the actual ride, just perfectly normal paranoia and fear of the unknown.

Depends on the person. Some are afraid of going upside down. Some are afraid of heights. Some are afraid of just how they feel. Some are afraid of how they look (I've noticed that it often looks worse than it is). It just depends on the person.

I had a response here, but I controlled myself. Hard work.

I go on all the coasters except ToT and RnRC. I don't like the rapid dropping, or going upside down. I used to be not like any coasters, but then I tried Splash. I liked it a lot and immediately wanted to go again. After that, I figured I could probably handle BTM and Space Mountain just fine. Now, my new favorite is EE.

I think the dark can definitely cause anxiety, even if you are not scared of the dark. It just intensifies everything.
I remember riding Space Mountain for the first time and not knowing where the drops were because of the darkness. I kept wondering every time we climbed up a little "Is it coming? Is it coming". Even though it is not a coaster, I also felt the same the first time I rode Splash Mountain. Since there are quite a few small drops inside, I kept wondering, "Is this the big one?" Total anxiety but in a good way :) I also remember on RNRC I had heard before I went on it for the first time that the "take off" was really intense so I was terrified. The fact that they count down before you leave the station was the worst because I was so scared at how fast it would be and then it being in the dark, not knowing if there would be any steep hills, etc. Sometimes too much info or not enough before you ride a coaster for the first time can make you scared depending on what you hear. Luckily, after you know what to expect it's more of a thrill and then that need to ride it again and again sets in.

I think one of the main fears on roller coasters is the anxiety when you have not been on it before. The anxiety just builds and builds during the wait and the ride. This is one reason that I wanted to get a FP for EE the first time I went on it, to eliminate the waiting anxiety.

I have been on Splash Mountain a number of times with first time riders. Each drop, they'd keep asking "is this the big one?" "are you sure it's not the big one?" Immediately after the big drop, they said "that wasn't so bad."

For me - it's like this. Sitting at the top of the hill it is not the thought "Oh my god, I'm going to die!". I'm bright enough to deal with that. The real thought is "Oh my god - this is gonna HURT!", and unfortunately in just about every one I have tried, it does.

A lot of people have no problem with up and downs, but hate rides like the Teacups where you spin. I simply can't do strong up and downs. I could sit and spin on the teacups forever, though.

lol, I don't have a fear. But my dilema is differently bad. I NEEED the most horrifying death defying throw my body in contortions coasters. So while other people get upset that they can't ride certain things at the world, I almost get as upset looking for a thrill I won't find there. But I love the place for what it offers anyway, I can hit thril coasters anywhere but I can't find Disney magic anywhere but a Disney park. :D
