What truly falls under the heading of an "Imagineer"?

Hello everyone. I was hoping I could get someone to clear some stuff up for me. Growing up I always thought that an imagineer was an engineer who had the creativity of an artist that obviously worked for Disney. However, I have heard that LOTS of occupations fall under Imagineering. Such occupations include; Lighting Designer, Set Designer, Scene Designer, Artist, Painter...etc. Is this true? I believed it was for about the last two years or so but then someone told me I was wrong. Out of the occupations I have listed, which if any, would be under Imagineering

I heard ALL of them fall under Imagineering. pretty much anything and everything can fall under Imagineering as long as you have the skills needed and the creativity required to "make magic happen"

why are you planning to be one? Me to, my gameplan is to move to California and start working first at Disneyland then slowly work my way up.

I'll third that! Though I may be more obsessed than either of you, seeing as I already have my college picked out (I'm in 9th grade), and I have an illustrated guide to the International Building Code open in front of me. :lookaroun

Can you work for Imagineering at Florida, or do you have to go to California? Also, what kind of computer-related jobs are at WDI?

Not that obsessed... But! I am in 9th grade too :lookaroun

And now, I'm editing a map of Animal Kingdom to include Australia with a Submarine Voyage. Any attraction ideas?

O believe me...I'm obsessed. I have been ever since 2001! I'm in 9th grade too! How wierd. Freshman life...at the Junior High (our school dist. is set up differently than most...). I've created countless Disney rides, parks, etc. I buy Hope Plan books for the fun of looking in awe at the architecture of some and looking in horror at the architecture of others. O well...hopefully it all pays off for me one day!

I'm in 9th Grade as well, but I've known I've wanted this job since 7th grade. I'm hoping to go to the California Institute of the Arts, and am (at the moment) planning to apply to no other college when the time comes, because I know that's the school for me. I took ninth grade art inb 7th grade and tenth grade art in Eighth Grade, but starting this year freshmen in High school don't take art, so next year I get to take whatever art class I want, since I have already satisfied the credit last year. I'm planning to take "Design and Drawing for Production" next year and the year after that I will take 3D Animation. I design rides all of the time (I have about 200 sheets of plank computer paper with me everywheree I go and about 300 more that I have put something on, and yes, those numbers are correct, as in I am not exagerating(Spelling?). I build models of Disney attractions/stores/monuments that already exist (most of the time they are functional, as in I built a 32 inch tall model of DCA's Tower of Terror in the couple of days before it opened with working elevators (I dropped them for the first time on May 5th; those who can guess why get extra points;-).) I also build models of my designs and extinct attractions.
I also recreate things from Disneyland (sometimes other Disney parks as well, but mostly Disneyland) and have created over I'd say 150 to 200 things, from Tiki Room Barker Birds(I re dressed one of those late 80's/early 90's repeating Parrot's to look like Jose, the Tiki room Barker Bird that was taken out years ago because guests would block the entrance to Adventureland by staring at him for long periods of time (I missed him, alright!?!?![even though I've never seen the real thing])) to Hatbox Ghosts, Main Street Light Up Signs to Adventures Thru Inner Space, Jack Skellingtons Psychotic Toys to give to the Children of the World on Christmas Eve(Haunted Mansion Holiday), Birdhouses of Haunted Mansions to rather large Clocks of the Future the used to Adorn the Entrance to Tomorrowland (Mine's six feet Tall!), Mr. Toad's Wild Ride Cars(Not a model, Full size!) to Animatronic Jack Skellingtons(Extremely simple, the mouth opens and closes to soundtrack) that are 7 feet tall, Models of the Castle to, well, you get the Idea. I'm doing everything in my power and then some to ensure that I'm going to be an Imagineer. I'm thinking I want to be in the Modeling department, but I'm not really sure at the moment. I'll figure it out. If I do get into the California Institute of the Arts, I will apply for a Job as a Cast member at Disneyland, so I can get a realk feel for the park, not that I don't already, but you klnow, figure out how things work such as rides, daily routines, what goes on, meet some more Imagineers (I know a few, and have a friend who knows one particularly famous one ;) ). I don't know how to end this post off, so I'll just say, any questions, PM me!

Oh my God, that's amazing! Do you have any pictures?
I've been doing hotels and theme parks purely on graph paper and Word documents. For the record, I've decided I'm going to Princeton.

I'm 17 and I'm starting university here in England in September/October. I'm studying Aeronautical/Aerospace Engineering with a general first years. I've left myself open to specialise in mechanical engineering as well, as aerospace is multi-disiplinary. As far as I can fine, engineers for Disney need a fair bit of practical experience. But I'm certainly not ruling out my chances of applying to Imagineering in the future. Luckily I get top grades in the UK, as I'm sure for engineering Disney take only the best. If anyone knows more about engineering at Imagineering, please PM me or reply below!

I have a ton of pictures, I just have to get them up. Trust me, what you see on those 2 sites is NOTHING compared to what I have done and have in the works. I have a bunch of pictures, they're just on my other comuter.I forgot to mention in my last post that I am painting the walls of my room to look like Disneyland, with each wall britaining to a certain land/lands. I've done some drawing on the walls, but for the most part I have mostly Concept art. I'm still trying to decide what to do with the Mainstreet wall. Right now, my door is going to be the front of the Emporium and I have my Light Up Crystal Arcade Sign and HO Scale WDW Main Street Train Station Model (The Monorail Toy collection one) and the train, which will encircle my room up near the ceiling, but thats all I got so far. I have limited room an the wall, yet I want to o something BIG! Any ideas?
I'll get to those new pictures as soon as I can!

Well, I'm in ninth grade too. I plan to take alot of art corses at different colleges because I love drawing. I've been obsessed with becomming an imagineer since 2001. I had already loved WDW, when I first went there when I was 4, but when I went back in 2001, I paid more attention to the details and complexity of the AAs, and I knew I wanted to be a Disney Imagineer. The main jobs at imagineering I want to have are either attraction concept art design, and blue skying. And I wonder too, are there imagineering offices in Florida? Because I would much rather live there in Celebration instead of LA.

Another 9th grader here. I'm taking a Art class right now and will take more later in High School. I am also considering taking some more Electronics classes too...
Have wanted to be an Imagineer for a while now, though there are other things that interest me too, though Imagineer is a major priority.

Oh my God... some of you people, I never would've guessed you were in 9th Grade. All of your posts and such are very mature. I thought you'd be... old...

Well, thank you, and I agree about all you other people, unless I wasn't one of those people, then, well, yes, I agree!
Hopefully we'll meet someday in the Imagineering Department!

I've wanted to be an Imagineer since about 2001...we all seem to be exactly the same :S lol. I took an art class last year in 8th but it sucked, the teachers at the Junior High aren't that good so I'm gonna wait till next year. I'm going to be doing theatre classes, drafting, art, music (band and maybe choir), and (if we have any) 3D animation and video editing classes. I have no clue what college I'm going to go to...but I prolly should start looking. Like yensidtlaw1969 said...hope to see you all in the Imagineering Dept!
