what should I do with my Kitty?

Has anyone used the onsite kennels? I have a 4 month old kitty (named Vista:) ) and I don't think we can leave her with anyone because we are going to be gone for 2 weeks! She is a handful! So we were thinking about putting her in the kennels for the 5 days we are on site and then taking her to the vacation home we got for the rest of the time.

Has anyone ever tried the kennels out? Do you have any tips for us?

Thank you!

We love our pet (see icon) so much that it is hard to leave him behind, but it is best for him and us. At our local vet, they offer kennel service for $9.00 per night. He is watched carefully, fed, always has water, and is walked three times a day, so we know he is taken care of.

I don't have personal experience with Disney or off-site kennels, and you just never know what kind of attention the pet will receive. There may even be age limits on how old a pet is before they will take it.

We know our dog is in good hands when we go on a trip, and don't have to worry about him, making one less thing to tend to while on vacation. Now, we miss him and know the sudden change is probably stressful for him, but we always return and he is always happy to be back home.

We always boarded our cats with our Vet. He and his staff knew them, and there was always someone there to care for them, and they used to get their checkups and a bath while they were there...I called it "Kitty Camp". We now have neighbors who will look in on them if we decide to go on vacation. They are older and prefer to be in their own house...
I do not believe the Kennel services are an overnight situation, and I would never leave my precious kitties with someone I dont know!

My grandmother always came over every day to feed my cat and play with him. He's 14 now and has diabetes though, and my grandmother won't give him the insulin shots he needs twice a day. But one of my friends also has a diabetic cat and she agreed to come to our house while we're in Disney and feed and shoot the cat. hehe...we have to joke about the insulin shots or we'll cry. We boarded the cat at the vet for one night but it was ugly. I would NOT suggest doing it with an older cat, especially a sick older cat. It's probably to have someone you know and trust look in on your kitty every day.

I always board my dog Dino with a vet that my parents take their cat to. He likes it there and has become very familiar with the staff, but I would like to use the onsite kennels sometime.

:lookaroun Hummmmm I have three kitty's and usually leave them at home with an extra litter box, and lots of food and water.

Also, the longest we have been gone is maybe 6 days-- 5 nights and they are fed when we leave, and of course when we get back that night. ( the house is usually a little ??? Ah messed up when we return, I wonder IF they party when we are gone? ) However, your little one may be lonely and you are going for?? 3 weeks? Maybe not, ha ha they make your place theirs in a very short time!

I have left them at the vet, which is good when you have one you know. Might be $$$$ for that long though?

My main question for you is how are you going to Disney?? Driving with a kitten? Flying--- hummm do not know about that these days.

I am sure the kennels would be fine but the transportation problem seems more of concern to me??

Maybe you will get a reply from someone who has used the kennels--

Good Luck :) Can you find someone to come to your place for you?? I know it will be hard to leave your baby but it may be the best idea seeing Vista has just gottten settled in, with those special little things and places to curl up. Let us know what you decide----

We have 2 dogs & 2 cats... when we go away we always kennel them (near home) 4 months is really young, and your little kitty would probably be better off at a kennel near your home. When we go away for a long weekend we still have to kennel our dogs, but we have an automatic feeder for the cats... fill a dish for the first day, then the next one opens in 24 hours, then the last one opens in 48 hours, then then next day we're home. :)

Thanks for your help guys! I still have no idea what we are going to do! We are driving so we were planning to take her in the car with us, I think she will be okay... and then I don't know from there! We would have to drive through because we wouldn't be able to take her in the hotel on the way.... we have roomates but they are mean to her and show no concern for her (and she is soo cute) so we don't want to leave her here because she will never get taken care of....plus she is a little wild! So I have no idea what to do! We are looking for a new vet so bunking her might not be a good idea! UGH...... my advice... never ever get a kitty before you go on a Disney Vacation!;)

Do you think the Pop will bend some rules for a cute kitty? I am jk... but it would be SO nice!

Is there the possibility of leaving the kitten with the person from whom you got it?

Are you sure there isn't someone at home who can take her in?

I am not a big fan of traveling with pets--especially cats. I mean, with dogs, you can stop and "take a walk"--dogs are used to being on your schedule for that. But cats are a little more "free form" in their litter habits. I don't know how you would be able to control this.

I am also concerned that you live with people who "are mean to her". That is not a good situation for your baby.....

Since people usually want a penny for you thoughts, if I give you a nickel's worth of free advice, will you send me 4 cents?

Leave kitty at home and have someone check on her/him every other day. Go to the store and buy a self-feeder and leave out a big bowl of water and fresh kitty litter. The cat is independent anyway and really could care less whether you are there or not!!

OR

Board kitty at the vet for $x a day. I would opt for the first option. Kitty will be fine at home without you there.

EDIT: just read your second post--board kitty at the vet's. Don't leave her/him with irresponsible roommates.

Kennels are a good thing, but as said earlier, with cats we tend to leave them at home with an abundant supply of water and food and fresh litterboxes.

If you do go the way of the Kennel, try to avoid the China Wok Kennel and The Cashew Kitty Home for Cats.

We always leave our dog at the vet's. :) They have his medical records right there, should he need attention, and I don't have to worry about him at all. With a cat, I know, it's different, but I'd just be so afraid that she'd get herself into something and hurt and there wouldn't be anybody there to help her. Especially since she's so young.

Have fun!!

Those aren't kennels! I just had lunch there the other... oh.... crap... :lookaroun

They got these pet resorts popping up all over where you can take your pet and they have lush amenities. There is one here with a dog pool. CRAZY! The resort is nicer than the one the pet-owner is going to. Good thing my folks live by close because they will check on our cats when we go to WDW in April.

We have extremely reliable (and patient!) neighbors who feed our dog and two cats, walk the dog, clean the litter boxes, and play with the whole gang every day. We do the same for their pets when our neighbors are away. Our experience has been that the pets are FAR more comfortable in their own home - and we have the added advantage of knowing that someone's keeping a close eye on our house every day while we're gone.

Our second choice would be to board our pets at our veterinarian's office.

Another vote for leaving the kitty at your vet! I have travelled quite a bit with my dogs, but it really limits your vacation. They don't like being cooped up in a hotel room all day while I'm out & the maid service is particularly unimpressed.

The vet takes good care of them & they always end up with freshly clipped nails & sometimes a bath. Disney kennels, on the other hand, won't walk them or let them stay over night.

If your kitty is too rambunctious to stay with a friend, do you think he'll be happy in a cage all day? And do you think *you'll* be having fun touring the parks while you're worried about him?

I think 4 months is a little young for a kennel or to be left alone but they will recieve excellent care. When we travel we take our dog to a kennel. We pay $12 a day but the place is excellent. Its climate controlled, has a security system, and they match dogs up by temperment so he gets a playmate. I made a mistake once and called to late and our normal kennel was full so I took him somewhere else. I ended up callin it "Doggie Deliverence". The place was a buck a day cheaper and they did groom him but what a hole. Hes not going back there. My sister in Conn found a woman who would come in and take care of their 2 dogs but they paid dearly for it. Sounds like that wouldnt work for you because of the roommates but, have any parents that would watch it? Tell them your prepping them for the grandkids someday!

WE have a dog and had a bad experience at a kennel, so we tried to leave him home and have the neighbor kids come ove 3 time a day and feed him, let him out and play with him. He hated it. He cried every time they left and would not eat. For the first time this Christmas we brought him to Disney with us. He slept pretty much the whole way in the car (20 hour drive). He got out when we got gas and we walked him and fed him. We stayed at an off-site hotel that allowed pets. During the day we used the Disney kennel. We brought him to Epcot because they are the only kennel that will walk your dog during the day. The kennel cost $9 overnight or $6 per day. We left him there during the day and picked him up after the park closed and he stayed at the hotel with us at night. He seemed to love it. After a few days he literally ran into the kennel and found his cage and got in. We would pay $2.50 for a walk. Most days 3 walks if he was there all day. This worked out fine for him. It really depends on your pet. PS: the kennels are open until 1 hour after the park closes. It you need to walk your pet or check out your pet after hours security will let you in 24 hours a day. Hope this helps.
