What Not to miss at Wilderness Lodge

Ok so.... here I am, over 200 days out from our November trip... staying at Wilderness Lodge Villas for the very first time and SO looking forward to it. (Of course, I will visit my beloved Poly during our stay!) I know the Poly grounds and must dos very well, but am completely clueless as to what things I should expect at WL. I already have an idea as to what to order from Garden Grocer to utilize a kitchen. (We're talking donuts for the boys, soda and water here... I am NOT cooking LOL)
During our vacations at Disney, we do a pool day, followed by an Epcot evening. So tell me, all of your wonderful WL lovers, what should we experience??? And up front, let me thank my wdwmagic sista @poohlover for suggesting WL to me and my family :)

Definitely check out Roaring Fork (QS) for their Carrot Cake and S'Mores cupcakes. The Mickey waffles used to be served there but have been moved to Whispering Canyon.

The boat dock is so beautiful and such a stress reliever at night (unless you are stuck in a long line waiting for a boat...LOL.) The larger boats take you to the MK and the smaller boats go to both the Contemporary and FW, which come in so handy when going to Chef Mickey's and Trails End. It is also a way to get to the monorail to travel to your beloved Poly. Make sure you take the boat at least once to get to the MK but I have always found the bus to be near to empty and even quicker.

The fireplace is one of our favorite things to do in the late evenings after we've returned for the night from dinner or a park. Like @epcotisbest mentioned, there are so many secluded areas to sit and kick back with a drink or coffee. Perfect after a long day in the parks.

Don't miss the gift shop (like I need to tell you this.) It has some really decent resort specific merchandise but doesn't hold a candle to the shops at the Poly. I still find myself in there every day anyway.

If you are into renting a boat, they have the same boats available at the WL that they offer at the Poly.

Enjoy the lobby and it's music. Sometimes we just find a seat in the middle of the lobby and take it all in. So relaxing and amazingly beautiful.

Oh, and don't forget to ring the cowbell on your wait to the bus stop and back. ;)

WL is actually our favorite. The lobby itself is breathtaking!:) The "quiet" pool has jets in it like a hot tub.;) The geyser is really cool. We love WCC, especially the all you can drink milk shakes.;) The little bridge that goes over the "springs" in the lobby is gorgeous!:) We found the QS area to be nice right by the main pool. Small slide, but kids still loved it!:) The boat to MK is a great convenience!:) We went to FW by boat to catch the HoopdeeDoo Musical Revue. It was something not to be missed if you've never done it!:)

I'll try and post some of my more fave WL pics from our visits after I get the kids in bed, but for now...

1. Grabbing some drinks and hanging out at Trout Pass
2. While we had sort of a mixed experience, I'd still pay a visit to WCC
3. OK- can't speak from personal experience, but Artist Point is a good friend's fave
4. While I think you're going just before the tree goes up in the lobby of the hotel, it's still nice to sit in there and relax by the fireplace + just explore the whole lobby area
5. The main pool is nice...I remember my kids drooling over it in 30 degree temps :D
6. The geyser is neat to see at least once
7. The Electrical Water Pageant makes its way by at night
8. The boat to MK as well as the boat to Ft. Wilderness/Contemporary are nice
9. We've had great food and service at Roaring Fork- even late at night
10. If you head up to some of the higher floors in the main building, it's kind of neat to look down on the lobby
11. Take a walk around and check out the wildlife topiaries
12. Someone might have to confirm for me, but I though WL was one of the hotels that offered a tour + a hidden Mickey hunt

- While I'm not sure which rooms face which way, but we lucked out and had a room facing MK when we stayed and could see portions of Wishes above the tree tops...I don't think this will be a possibility at the villas though, so it might be a total no go.

I'll try and post some pics later :)

1. On the second floor overlooking the lobby is a great place to sit in front of a fireplace in comfortable leather chairs. Excellent vantage point for looking at the lobby or just relaxing.

2. Slide over to the Villas and go see the trains in the sitting area. Plus, the stonework and ambience of the Villas is really relaxing.

3. Tour the waterfalls and listen for the crickets at night.

Just allow time to relax and enjoy the resort. It's a vacation unto itself just about. We love the boats to and from the other resorts as well as to the Magic Kingdom. Riding at night is a lot of fun as you see the outline of the grizzly more prominently in the Lodge's appearance.

I like the geyser.

If you have the time and the energy, take the walk over to Ft. Wilderness. It's a pleasant walk and you can go see the horses. :)

Just so you aren't too disappointed if it happens...sometimes when you ask for ketchup, they just bring you ketchup.

Have a great time!

My family and I stayed at the Wilderness Lodge twice. Each time was a lot of fun (but for different reasons)

1st Trip

We had always wanted to stay at the Wilderness Lodge and after years of speculation, we finally booked a trip there. We were always a Polynesian family but we wanted to go for a change. And change we got. As soon as we walked into the lobby we were amazed at its height, its detail and of course, the fireplace with the rocking chairs. Huge difference from Poly. We definitely were not in Hawaii anymore...

We spend our afternoons at the main pool, since trying to walk the Disney parks in August from 12pm-3pm is a one-way ticket to exhaustion. The pool was very well themed, and our favorite place to relax was on the left side, where the waterfall cascades into the pool. That was our Christmas card that year no doubt!

Also the geyser was awesome. The Magic Kingdom boat ride (especially at sunset and up front in the open air) is a must do!! The WCC was a riot for dinner. I asked for a coke. And they gave me "a" whole coke (2 Liters worth) The humor there is very clever and funny. The arcade was nice, but we preferred the free game of constantly ringing the cowbell outside the arcade and annoying anyone who walked passed :) Yet, our first trip felt like a whirlwind. As do most Disney trips, but this time it was more pronounced. I guess we just tried to do too much in one week. Needless to say we still had a great time, but we spent more time on the buses (probably my least favorite part of WL) and less time enjoying the detail and hidden treasures of the WL. So the first trip was fun! We got to stay at the resort we've always wanted to. But we all agreed we had to go back.

2nd Trip

We vowed to go back to WL. Now with experience we felt it wouldn't be as rushed and therefore would be able to enjoy the resort more.

We decided to drive to Florida from New Jersey. Eliminate the need for the buses so we can go to the parks (Epcot, DHS, AK) without having to wait for transportation. And we visited the Villas. This was the best part of the trip, because we discovered the "Train Room" A private fireplace, big leather chairs, and Walt Disney's own trainset from the Carolwood Pacific Railroad he had. It's really cool to look at all the history, and there's rarely anyone there, so it's very peaceful and relaxing. We also used the fitness center, Sturdy Branches. It's in the Villas as well, and again, it's very quiet.

We also decided to rent bikes, which was another fun feature we overlooked in our first trip. Biking through the woods to Fort Wilderness was my favorite trail (Not a fan of the hills on the Boardwalk/Beach Club bike loop) And we didn't do it, but there is also a boat rental as well. And we went to Artist Point for our "fancy dinner" of the trip. It was a tad pricey, but then again so is everything in WDW. The 2nd trip was great. We had experience from the first trip that truly helped us experience WL is such a more calming and relaxing fashion, which is what I feel the WL is intended to be like.

Also, I love Hidden Mickeys, and Wilderness Lodge is full of them! I'm pretty sure it had the most of any resort on property. There are so many that I actually remember there were tours given by the resort to show guests where all the Hidden Mickeys were. I won't spoil where any of them are...but some of them are in very very cool places!

So overall, it's a tale of two trips basically. Both were great, but my advice is just slow down and take everything in because it goes by really fast. Visit the little hideaways like the train room, or rent a bike/boat, or find all the Hidden Mickeys, or try and find something else to do that we missed!

You'll have a great time I'm sure!

OK- picture time...

Not sure what you'd call this area, but it's the little viewing area that was on the 5th floor overlooking the pool. This was right around sunrise...

I have mentioned it before, but will again. Hidden Springs pool is a quiet, restful retreat from the hustle and bustle of WDW. Also, there are some great places inside VWL to hang out with a book if it is a rainy day. The train room, with some of Walt's actual scale trains is wonderful to see.
The last time we stayed at VWL, we drove and brought our bicycles and rode over to Fort Wilderness almost every morning, and some evenings.
Whispering Canyon Cafe is good, all three meals.
At the lodge itself, there are some nice places to just relax.
Also notice the details of the grounds...no palm trees.
Here is a pic of the HS pool.
Ohhhhhhh shade at the pool!!!!!!!!!! LOVE it!

LOVE it!!! Thank you for posting! When DS and I took a walk around property last fall, we fell in love with the atmosphere, and ate at Roaring Forks and really enjoyed it.
