what kinds of things u do in the car if u r not driving

Last time I went out I drank 4 Red Bulls so that I could stay awake and keep my friend company. I couldn't sleep the night before because I was so excited and so I kept dosing off on the way out. But, Those Red Bulls did the trick. Needless to say I was pretty hyper the rest of the day, more so than usual :)

But our favorite activities were...
1) Listening and singing along to our combined enormous Disney CD collection.

2) Yelling at idiots on the highway. There are alot of them.

3) Just chit-chattin :)

Here are some things I used to do when I would drive or ride for long distances:

1. Listen to books on tape / CD. Get them at the library.

2. The weeks before my trip, I used to record TV shows onto audio tape - just put the tape recorder next to the TV speaker (this was before DVDs). It is really fun to only listen to your favorite sitcoms. If you have a DVD recorder and portable player, you could watch your favorite TV shows. Most people only think to watch movies.

3. Bring a portable CB radio. It is a lot of fun talking to truckers, and you won't need that radar detector - simply listen and you'll know exactly what mile markers the police are located.

4. Bring large marker and paper to write messages to riders in other cars.

my dad has a theory about the 2 hour flight. sit down. flight takes off. crusing altitude. flight attendant brings drinks. watch 30 minute tv short. read catalogue. decend. get off plane.

Honest, I swear my dad never gets bored on the 2 hour flights from chicago. of course, he has to drive to the airport, and then again to WDW from the airport, so it is his time to relax.

I, on the other hand, have to be doing something. I usually bring one book, two magazines, and possibly work. and a cd player. However, I am going to try something new. I just bought a portable DVD player, and I am a netflix.com member, so i am thinking that the DVD player will be all I take with me. I am thinking that it is perfect for the plane/car rides, and while we are in the hotels at night, we can use it to hook up to the TV to watch movies with everyone.

My mother, on the other other hand, is HORRIBLE about her carryon. She has 30 magazines, books, knitting stuff, work, crossword puzzle books, etc. I swear she could fit a family of 4 in her bag.

and my husband sleeps. in the airport. on the plane. in the car. on the beach. next to the poo. and just about any form of WDW transportation.

Whenever I have long travels, I like to make myself an activity book (because I'm a dork!) I'll throw in some word searches, coloring pages, yadda yadda, i'd be happy to put a WDW one together for ya! :hammer:

Usually I am driving, but when we switch drivers, we will talk, listen to music. My nephew brought his DVD player and we all took turns watching movies with him (Disney :D).

2 more weeks and we'll be starting on our 11 hour drive! Yippeee!!!

My kids are 2 and 4 so I spend most of my time fetching them snacks, drinks, toys, changing the DVDs, and keeping them from killing each other. When they are behaving I just chit chat with my husband. In regular life we don't get much time to have an uninterrupted conversation, so car rides are great for catching up on each other's lives and making plans for the future.

When I was a kid we used to play nintendo (Super Mario Bros 3 LOL) all the way there on our tiny portable black and white tv. It was a 2-3 day drive from Upstate, NY!

We listen to Jimmy Buffet music and play a lot of Disney 20 questions. We try to find the most obscure Disney item for people to guess. OK I admit it, we're dorks...:o

Reinstate the lost art of conversation, listen to homemade Walt Disney World sounds and music mix CD's, gorge on Taco Bell, McDonalds, and Sonic, and sleep.

Don't forget to pack Disney planning DVD's to watch.....gets you really excited when you enter Fl, and still have another 4 hour + ride to go.

Family Fun has a book out with travel games in it....check your library or bn.com

I knit in the car....take up a new craft. Knitting, Crochet, Cross Stitch, etc, are all easy items to take with you in the car.

Stop at Cracker Barrel for your first (or every, like we do!) meal. They have a travel section with toys and stuff. And they have Klutz books, all of which are great for keeping you occupied in the car.

Keep a travel journal. Record times, temperatures, funny things you see, etc. Great to look back on.

Get a disney trivia book ( http://search.barnesandnoble.com/booksearch/isbnInquiry.asp?userid=0m7qj9WBJW&isbn=1887140492&itm=2 )
and impress people with all of your knowledge when you get there.

We have one really weird tradition for our drive down. When Rock and Roller coaster first opened, neither of us could remember the name of the actress who played the manager in the pre-show. It bothered us most of the day. The next morning, I finally remembered--Ileana Douglas. Ever since, as we drive down, just about the time we cross the state border into Florida, one of us will yell out "Ileana Douglas!!!!"

When I was young my brother and I made these really cute Bingo boards with road signs & different animals & types of cars on it. Then were would see who could get Bingo first. It was always so much fun!

Our drive is a 23 hour drive, usually. So when I go to Disney with my best friend and her parents, we take my mini-van. It has a DVD player and TV built in, so I'll bring my many Disney DVD's, seasons of Will & Grace, and Disney vacation planners and things like that which will get us in a Disney mood.

I also bring my Disney CD's that I made so everyone can listen to at the same time. It's a collection of the most famous Disney songs from every movie. They're in alphabetical order by movie, and then they're in chronological order by when they're played in the movie. But yeah, we usually play the CD's right when we leave, and then as we get closer the next morning.

I don't read usually, because we don't stop at night and it gets dark. Also, motion sickness kicks in after a few hours. But I do bring my CD player (don't have an iPod yet =( but maybe for my birthday next week) so I can listen to my Disneymania CD's or something else, but I usually listen to Disney because on my Disney vacations, I'm strictly Disney.
