What is THAT Building?

Sort of. The gift shop was part of TL before the Space Mountain complex was built in 1977, which included the Starcade and a fantastic live stage venue where the Magic Eye Theater is now. IMO the design of the area was destroyed when Captain Eo was added in the late 80s. Here is how "Space Mountain Plaza" looked when it first opened.

Looking at the second photo, I *just* realized that the "outdoor" terraced seating for Red Rocket's Pizza Port was originally intended to overlook the theater area. That makes so much more sense than the current layout, overlooking the flow of people in and out of the Space Mountain entrance and the 3D theater queue, in all of its basement-like glory

Obviously a lot of the damage was done when they converted the theater to an indoor space, but they made it worse during the TL98 redo by removing the speedramp in favor of giving Cosmic Waves a high-profile location (oops!). This led to putting the Space Mountain entrance back in the armpit of the complex

It just goes to show that any redo of TL needs to take a bigger picture approach. There are a lot of ways to improve the basics of land (along with additions), but it will take some creative problem solving
Ever notice how the roof of the EO theater isn't connected to the Space Mountain complex? There is like a rain gutter gap there. It's like a separate building. What if they made some kind of Haunted Mansion-like turbo lift to move people to second floor?
Those are expansion joints, which are common in any large building or structures that have been added-on to over time, like airport terminals, hospitals, or even the Mickey & Friends parking structure. It allows the individual structures to expand and contract with the weather, and move independently during a seismic event, while still providing a connection for usability and weatherproofing.

Theoretically it also means that it would also be pretty easy to demolish either part without any significant impact on the other, should they want to go that route.

Next time you're at DL take a look at the area behind the Fastpass station for Space Mountain. That wall was the counter for the Space Place restaurant, and Pizza Port was Mission to Mars.

Did the Space Place exist after the theater was enclosed for Captain EO? I know it was gone by the time Tomorrowland '98 happen. It seems like a well hidden place if the outdoor theater didn't exist anymore.

Tomorrowland is such an aesthetic mess. I really hope for a full-on revamp at some point, with intent and beauty brought back into the design. But with so much attention on Star Wars Land (sigh), I wonder how long guests will be stuck with this confused, ugly, jumbled up area.

This.

I've said it multiple times, Tomorrowland is undoubtedly the worst land of the park, especially from an aesthetic view. The Starcade is a perfect example. Just a horrible waste of space and unpleasant to look at.

Tomorrowland should have been priority over SWL.

In the big picture I can understand why Tomorrowland is low on the corporate list of priorities compared to Star Wars. I feel confident though that a TL overhaul is imminent, and will likely be announced within a year or two after SW Land opens, if not sooner.

Right now no one knows what to do with TL. With Marvel going into DCA and Star Wars getting its own land, there are no hot IPs right now that the Bobs can shove in there. I mean, what are they gonna do, approve some non-IP driver rethink of Tomorrowland that's unique to Disneyland? That would be CRAZY.

I'd guess we're at least 5 years away from anything starting in Tomorrowland if things keep up the way they are with SWL and Fantasyland expansion/Toontown removal.

I believe Disney will wait until after Star Wars Land opens to close up Tomorrowland. That will allow the park to keep current capacity while Tomorrowland is down for 3-5 years. On the other hand, Tomorrowland is super popular right now. Will it stay packed even after SWL opens?

While that's all very true, the motive to revamp the land could be driven by the need to improve capacity and traffic flow on that side of the park (I'm looking at you Autopia and Peoplemover track) along with the closure of Star Tours when SW Land opens. Also, if Nemo can coexist with Buzz Lightyear in TL, then apparently just about any old IP can work there. ;)

I said it before that this was my first visit to DLR. When we decided it was time for Space Mountain I kinda had a hard time figuring out where the entrance for the line was.

Wayfinding in Tomorrowland is just awful, and its been exacerbated by the terrible bottlenecks created in the wake of TL '98.
