What if I just walk up....

....to a desk at one of the resorts and try to get a room? Would I get any kind of a deal or would I have to pay full rack rate? I may be in Orlando in October and I thought it might be cool to "take a wrong turn" and spend a night at Disney. I love surprising my kids like that. So what do you think?

Sounds like a neat plan, but I do not know what they would give you as a price. I do not know of any deals that are out for that time of year. The latest deals I have seen close out on 9/30. Sorry, hopefully someone will have some info.

Possibly a AAA discount, if you're a member, but I'm not entirely positive about this. I've never spontaneously gone Disney. I have to spend months, if not years, planning meticulously (aka-going over every detail like the person I am:lol:).

Good luck!:D

In all probability you won't even get a room let alone a good rate. The tourist slump is pretty much over at WDW so last minuet rooms are a rare thing. In the past 4 months I have found myself without a room in WDW twice and have had to stay off property. If you want to plan a detour have the room set up in advance.

Walking in to any hotel and trying to get a room is always a gamble. The room rate for a walk in is based on room availability. If you walk into a hotel that is pretty much booked up, they won't offer you any discounts becuase they don't have to. If you walk into a hotel and they have tons of rooms available, then discounts like AAA, AARP, AP, etc would apply because they want to occupy the room. I tell our AAA members all the time to call ahead and make the reservation and secure the discount, walk-ins are way too much of a gamble!

It's not AS spontaneous, but I'd suggest calling ahead, even if only a few hours ahead, and see what's available, and specifically ask if there are any current deals. If not, ask them about a AAA discount. This way, at the very least, you don't risk your kids getting all psyched as they get on-property, only to be told there's no room at the inn.

A discreet conversation while the kids are eating lunch=thousands less in spychiatric bills as they get older. :D

My advice would be to call central reservations from the parking lot of the hotel you want to stay at, the later the better. This has worked for me twice, once over a labor day weekend and last year at Christmas. Both times I arrived at Disney eariler than planned and had no trouble getting a room.

In October it is pretty slow so dont think you would have any trouble getting a room, but dont think you will get any deals if you just walk in. I agree with what someone else said, either call while the family is eating lunch or at a rest stop so there is no chance of disapointment.

Actually, October is getting very popular now because of the Food and Wine Festival.
