Walt took liberty in aging them to match the times during the 20th century. John and Sarah are in each scene but aged slightly.

I'm curious, Disney says they follow a family through the 20th century in Carousel of Progress, but what happened to the little girl in the first scene?

She was probably a neighbor girl hired out for help, which was extremely common at the time. My grandmother and all her sisters were hired out to neighbors to help with household chores in the mid 30-40's.
