What happened to that island where Discovery Island used to be? Is it just sitting there vacant? What's planned for that space? My guess is nothing, it was a real pain to get over there. Just a stupid question that popped into my head. It would be cool if anyone knows anything.

When I was last at WDW in September 2001 I was speaking to a cast member at AK and he had rumours that it was going to be turned into a honeymoon island type resort. I had also heard this before on a different web board too.

I did hear this however before 11/9.

Ok Ok lets get back on topic.

To answer your question there have been crazygirley, there have been many rumors about what was to do be done with discovery island, The Honeymoon cottage concept has been brought up as well as an atraction based on the game Myst. The last time I had heard these discused was about a year ago but as yet nothing had gone further than speculation and the usual CM rumor mill, some say that these Ideas are dead, and I tend to see this as true at this time since nothing has been reported and due to cost cutting on the rest of the property, I dont see anything happening there for quite some time

Another question...why did they shut it down. Was it because of the difficulty to get there or lack of interest? I barely remember the place, but never heard why they actually closed it.

It was because Animal Kingdom opened... :)

Oh ok, I thought it closed way before AK opened...I didn't realize they were connected.

It closed after AK opened...didn't make sense for them to have two Animal Parks.

The island is sort of spooky looking now. I went passed it on my watermouse...and there is nothing there except that "crashed" boat on the shore. Very spooky looking.

Thank you, folks! I'll be here all night. Don't forget to tip your waitress and try the veal...available for a limited time in the Affection Section of Animal Kingdom. :)

We return you now to your regularly scheduled topic.

Thanks for the info...I guess I remember bits and pieces now. It seems to me like AK just opened, but I know it has been YEARS ago. I guess I just had it in my mind that it closed way before AK opened. I went around it on the watermouse also and thought what a waste of great space. I never had the opportunity to visit it when it was open, but I still have a brouchure on the place. Sad that they closed it down, but I suppose it was necessary.

It seems like it would be really creepy over there, but in a fun way. If I had the money, I would love to pay for a private party on that island. (If, that is, all the cages and ________ and stuff are all cleaned up, doubtfull...) How cool would it be to campout there, watching the fireworks at night!!! Cool...!

I would love to see Disney do something with that island just for children...like the pirate cruise is just for them. They have a lot of potential with that property, but I seriously see them doing anything with in in the near future. I am sure it is not high on their priority list.
