What did you think of the new Tonight show with Jimmy Fallon?

Well, Jimmy Fallon debuted his version of the Tonight show last night. He did a nice job. The opening monologue (the first of two) was very nice, and it seemed that he genuinely appreciated his new gig. He poked fun at Jay Leno's return by saying something like, "This is the Tonight show, and I'm Jimmy Fallon, your host, for now;" but for the most part was very nice in his reverence for his predecessors and pointing out his parents in the audience.

It was fun how he did that first monologue, sort of conscious of his place in history. but then re-started the show with a "regular" topical monologue.

I also enjoyed the fun parade of stars who came out to give him $100 each having lost bets that he would never get to host the Tonight show.

I do wish that the show should not be based in New York, although I understand that he did not want to move everyone like Conan had to. I just think NBC had a good balance with Tonight based in Southern California (even giving Burbank a popularity it never had) and Late Night based in New York. Now, between these shows and SNL and Today, NBC is almost solely based out of 30 Rockefeller Ctr. Not balanced enough.

I am also not so sure that I like all these late, late night show guys simply bringing their old show with them when they get promoted to the broader audience of 11:30. David Letterman did it first, then Conan did it (except carrying everyone across country), and now Jimmy Fallon is essentially rebranding his Late Night show as the Tonight show with a slightly larger studio. Same band, same color scheme, same setup. All maybe a little tweaked, but it does not appear to be tweaked much. Even the opening is still essentially the same as he had had in late-late-night (a breathless, almost yelling announcer, rather than the more staid but upbeat voice Leno and Carson had had -- no Ed McMahon). Leno, on the other hand, had essentially a blank slate with a new band with a new (although somewhat familar style) set when he started (the first time).

We will see more as we go, and I like The Roots band, but I think of the Tonight show as a broader canvass than the late(r) night shows, which I think are better aimed at the college crowd. I think Jimmy Fallon has an intelligence, and a reverence for the institution that will help him, and I wish him success. He has it in him to follow in Carson's and Leno's shows (especially Carson's, whose shoes formed the path). I do hope that he broughdens it out at least a little.

What did you all think?

I had several laugh out loud moments last night. Liked having the celebs come out and give him $100, but it got a bit long. The Evolution of Hip Hop was very funny. Will Smith was good.

I am not a U2 fan, so I turned it off when they were on.

The studio did seem smallish and not quite as grand as the Burbank location. I hope they can get the guests in NY when the majority of them live in California.

I haven't yet watched it. Will probably watch on NBC.com. I'll really, really, really miss Jay, but I'm willing to give Fallon a chance

I did like the "Evolution of Hip Hip" and U2 performing on the roof (the "Top of the Rock," in case you have been there). A neat novelty, but I do think the Burbank studio would be better as bigger in the long run for the show.

I gave up watching the Tonight show years ago and really couldn't stand Jay Leno so I'm delighted that Jimmy Fallon is taking the reins. I couldn't watch him last night due to a family commitment quite early this morning, but I will be tuning in tonight.

I have been a fan of Jimmy Fallon. I'm so happy I get to watch him an hour earlier. He's so talented. His musical skits are so funny. He has a great voice. If you get a chance to watch any on YouTube, my favorites are with Robin Thick, Mylee Cyrus and his Bruce Springsteen song. He definitely appeals to the younger generation.

Loved the evolution of hip hop. Not a huge U2 fan so I switched channels for that part. Having them perform where they did reminded me of watching the VMAs of recent years where musical acts get scattered at other locations. I hope that's not going to be the norm for musical guests. I don't favor that format. After he started chatting with Will Smith I fell asleep. Doesn't look like I missed much. LOL!

@casutton96 made his biggest purchase of his life fairly recently. Definitely noteworthy!

Crap! Forgot! I did have to buy a new Rock Band 3 guitar. We lost the toggle for the old one. I struggle with the fret buttons on the Guitar Hero guitar DS17 has. My left hand/fingers don't work the way they should due to a significant injury when I was little. Sooooo, I bought my own pretty blue guitar. The buttons are so much better for me...and just to not here the click click click when I strum. Soooooo much better! Now let's see if I can work on the hard level. I so want our band (The Walter E's) to advance more! I don't want my lame self be what holds us back.

I like Fallon. His bits have great energy and he just really wants people to enjoy themselves when they watch. Plus he has the best late night band on TV. I hope NBC gives him a chance unlike the last time Leno stepped down.

The only problem is Fallon is always on the same time as someone I like better. Craig Ferguson is my favorite so I usually missed his Late Night show. Now I'm going to be missing his monologue for Colbert.

I think Fallon will do the job well. Though, for sentimental reasons, it was hard seeing Jay Leno leave. My Mother, who passed away November of 2012, was a big Leno fan. Whenever I'd go over to her house, we'd have a tradition of staying up and watching Leno's Headlines segment. Good times. Special memories.

But I think the torch has been passed on to a worthy successor, and I wish Fallon the best of luck following Jay's footprints.
