What attraction is best associated with Disney to outsiders?

I'd say the Teacups, because they're in almost all the Disney promotional materials including almost ALL TV ads.

If someone had never been to WDW and based their opinions on modern TV commercials alone:

-There would only be MK (seriously, when do you ever see mention of other parks, Spaceship Earth, ToT, etc on modern TV ad's?)

-All families who visit WDW wear brightly colored matching shirts, and smile 24/7.

-The only attractions are: The carousel, Dumbo, teacups, BTMR, and the final drop of Splash.

-There is a grass area adjacent to the castle where Cinderella awaits with *NO* crowds/lines whatsoever, just for your child to run up and give her a big hug.

-Come to think of it, the same can be said for Mickey, Minnie, Buzz Lightyear, and other characters who roam the park freely with no lines to meet them.

-You would always be guaranteed the perfect front & center view for the fireworks.

-Kids never become cranky. Even when leaving after a long day, or at breakfast. No sir, just 100% smiles all around, non stop.

-The one and only iconic structure on the entire WDW property (or any DisneyParks property, for that matter) is Cinderella Castle.

-It never rains at WDW, and crowd levels on the streets are always thin.

Because of Disney's complete lack of competent marketing, its like, Dumbo, Teacups, and Its a Small World. (With characters bombarding you with hugs everywhere you go.)

Because, you know, those rides just make people want to rush out and spend several thousand dollars to ride.

I think you hit the nail on the head here.

And it can unfortunately make a Disney fan stereotyped as an obnoxious man-child. :brick:

I actually was recently part of a conversation on just this topic (well, sort of)a few weeks ago. I was waiting for my child's dance class to start and the parents of the kids in the previous class were discussing vacations. Finally one brought up going to Disney World. The things said next almost made me choke!
Mom1: You can't take kids to Disney until they are at least 10. There's nothing for them to do! Trust me, my parents took me when I was little.
Mom2: Oh, well, I guess we can save our money then.
Me: Umm, actually most rides don't have even a height restriction. The majority with a height restriction are 40", followed by 44". Only like 2 rides even have a 48" restriction. My son was 40" at 3.
Mom2: Really? Why do you know that?
Me: I take my kids whenever I can.
Mom3 to moms1 &2: Don't bother with Disney. We have the exact same thing just a few hours away. Go to Chattanooga and go to Lake Winnepesaukah. They have everything that they have at Disney. They have teacups and the elephant ride. They even have roller coasters so it's better than Disney.
Mom1: Wait, what was the name again?
Moms 1 and 2 pull out paper to right down what mom 3 is saying.
Me: You do know that Disney is huge right? Lake Winnie is cool, and you should definitely go down for the day at some point, but it doesn't compare to Disney World. Disney World includes 4 amusement parks, 2 water parks, a huge shopping district and tons of really cute resorts to stay at. At Disney World your kids can hug their favorite characters, ride all kinds of rides, see amazing fireworks and an electrical parade and still have a million things left to do!
Mom3 (rolling her eyes): Lake Winnepesuakah is the same thing.

At that point I just closed my eyes and took some deep breaths. To see just how crazy it is here is Lake Winnie's website- http://www.lakewinnie.com/home/attractions/ Again, it is a cute one day excursion but the same thing as Disney World? Obviously Disney really needs to do a little better at showing people what they are all about!:brick:

^^ Yep, I don't understand why they don't throw in some shots of Tower of Terror, Everest, Rock 'n' Roller Coaster, Soarin', Star Tours II, and a few others to say "look, we have much more than just teacups!" and then include the water parks, golf courses, resorts, spas, fancy restaurants, Boardwalk, recreational activities, etc.

Nope! Its always Teacups, Dumbo, kid hugging Mickey, BAM! Done with this commercial!

There was once a time when WDW had epic commercials...actually showing newcomers there is more to "The World".

Those types of commercials made me want to pack my bags right then & there and fly to WDW.

I always loved that commercial. I haven't seen it in years!
