I'll "scold" friends of ours when they go to Disney multiple trips but never venture over to Universal to try it out.
I'm admittedly one of those people who goes to WDW regularly but has never been to Uni. The reason is pretty simple: by the time I've paid for WDW including my AP and all, I can't justify paying for Uni. Plus a huge chunk of it is Harry Potter, and I'm not into Harry Potter at all. I really have nothing against Uni, but I love Disney and can only do one or the other at this point. Maybe in a few years I'll go for a day or two once all of the new stuff at Disney is open, especially since my new job offers discounted tickets.

We do Disney a few time a year but also visit Knoebels Grove in elysburg pa, love it and so cheap compared to Disney. The kids and grandkids love our trips there. They have tons of covered picnic areas with tables and shareable grills, you can leave your cooler and stuff on a table, go into the park for a few hours and come back and it will all still be there. The foods available at the concessions are also very good. Does not compare to the Disney magic but still old school fun.

It can't be stressed enough, though. Knoebels simply has the best bumper cars anywhere. Those old hunks of steel pack a wallop like nowhere else. The Grand Carosel also is a gorgeous specimen from the days when Merry-go-rounds were carved by hand.

I haven't been there since I was a teenager...do they still have the Cosmatron?

Okay..........I won't "scold" you;)

A section of Universal is Harry Potter. Nicely themed and such but if you go to Islands of Adventure it is just a portion of it. It is like saying you don't want to go to Disneyland because there is Toontown there and you aren't interested. Potter might be 15-20% of the park at best. There is still well themed places like Dr. Seuss land, Marvel, Toontown, Jurassic Park, etc. Very Disneyesque.
