That’s right dear friends, MrPromey is a closet Trekkie… Well not exactly a closet Trekkie, if you bring it up I’ll talk about it at length (like everything else  ) but you won’t see me running around conventions dressed like a klingon or anything. I guess you could say I’m more of a moderate Trekkie that keeps a low profile so as to not be confused with the hardliner Trekkies that frighten/annoy non-Trekkies…

In any event, I got to go to a prescreening of the movie that comes out tomorrow night. I’ve gotten to see a good number of movies in advance (usually weeks rather than a day) of their release date because of the involvement my employers have in their promotion but this is the first time I’ve gotten to go to one that I would otherwise have been willing to cough up good money to see right after work on the day it comes out…

I honestly have to say that I think this was probably the best of the “Next Generation” movies. I’m not going to go into a lot of details because anyone who is a really big fan has probably already read the script online and everyone else has probably already stopped reading this post…

So without going into the story I have to say that the visuals of this movie were really great. Seeing the bridge of the Enterprise with the front half torn off showing empty space was really something. Hearing the captain say “on screen” when that side of the room was nonexistent was a nice touch as well!

I guess now all the Star Wars fans probably better understand why I’m not all that big into Star Wars – I’m more of the pocket protector sci-fi variety.:p :lookaroun

Well, they get totally wasted but this is Star Trek, you know? They managed to bring Spock back and at the very end of the movie, there is the suggestion that this person may some way, some how not be gone for good but I don't want to spoil the movie for anyone who hasn't seen it yet.

I had heard they wanted to work Spock in but couldn't, I'm glad they found a way. :sohappy:

It's like a comic book. Death is only a temporary inconvenience.

Thanks Mr. P! I was a bit disoppointed with the last one, but it sounds like this one might be getting back on track.

Sorry! I didn't write that very well! Spock isn't in this one. :) I was just using him as an example of someone we thought was dead and gone forever in a previous movie.... or so we were lead to believe.

Apparently there is this wide spread belief that the odd numbered movies are really bad and the even numbered movies are the good ones... This is #10 which would make it an even movie.

I honestly thought after the last one that we wouldn't be seeing any more moves because it seemed so out there and like they were really reaching with it but this one is much more focused. Another thing nice about it is that when certain characters go acting all heroic this time around, it doesn't seem as forced and artificial as it has in previous movies. In this one it comes across much more like they are doing what they have to in extreme circumstances - much more of a human feel.

At the rate they've been going through starships in these recent movies though.... :brick:

All I have to say is start looking for "scratch and dent" sales at your local galaxy class dealership. ;)

Well, I'm glad that the movie was good. I'm I going to see it tonight and I HATE Star Trek. I had a bet with a buddy --if I won he had to go to a Disney movie with me dressed as Mickey. If he won, which he did, I had to go see the Star Trek movie dressed as something related to the movie. I think I'm not going to have to wear the costume, but I won't find out till tonight. I just hope that the movie can interest a person who does not follow Star Trek at all.

Well, I’m not going to argue with you about this but for the longest time I had it stuck in my head that #4 was actually #5 and I liked #4 (not realizing it was #4) so I figured that I didn’t agree with that philosophy. Since I have recently been set straight about #4 being #4, I realize that I’m too confused about the order to have a solid opinion on this subject thought it would seem to hold true with the last few releases… :)

Actually, if you’ve never followed Star Trek you might not like it at all. Part of what I liked about it was that they didn’t spend a lot of time explaining things about characters (like why Riker and Troy were getting married). Not understanding certain things about some characters may make parts a little harder to get into. It is hard for me to say though since they were all familiar to me…

Another thing worth mentioning about this one is that it focuses almost entirely on only two or three characters. Most of the cast is actually absent or totally in the background for the bulk of this film. It doesn’t really bother me. In fact, I didn’t even realize it till a few minutes ago but it is sort of worth pointing out.

I'm not a hardcore star trek fan but loved and still love Next Generation. It is by far my favorite Star Trek....the rest asside from the original all suck IMO. I saw one of the Next Generation movies and thought it was pretty good...there was a second one too right? If so I never saw it. But Nemesis looks too sweet for me to pass up....I'm looking forward to seeing it. :)

Here is the order of the films, with my general opinion of them in parenthesis.

1. Star Trek: The Motion Picture (I thought it was kind of dry for the most part, but the recent DVD directors cut has redeemed it's value quite a bit. Of course, even though it was dry it probably remained to most fateful to the actual TV series)

2. The Wrath of Khan (One of the best trek films, and one of the best films I have ever seen period)

3. The Search For Spock (this was actually pretty good on it's own right, but it is sandwiched between two GREAT films)

4. The Voyage Home (another excellent film, one of the best)

5. The Final Frontier (it sucked... it really, really sucked...)

6. The Undiscovered Country (continues the tradition of being a truly excellent film)

7. Generations (pretty good, but it's not GREAT like the even-numbered films)

8. First Contact (amazing on all levels, my favorite trek film)

9. Insurrection (a TV show plotline turned into a movie. It's not that great at all)

10. Nemesis (haven't seen it)

The odd-numbered films really aren't that bad (exceptions being 5 and 9), but they don't even compare to films like Wrath of Khan or First Contact.

Just saw "Nemesis"

Just some trivia about me and STAR TREK....

I am old enough to have seen the original "Star Trek" series, first run...and I have seen every episode of every "Trek" show ever since. I liked ALL of the TREK movies. I even have a Star Trek costume I made for Halloween....

So I went to see "Nemisis" today, and enjoyed it very much...it is supposed to be the "last voyage" for the NG cast. I don't think so though, but if it is, I hope they move onto the DS9 and the Voyager cast...Why not, huh ?

Live Long and Prosper, ya'll :)

I really hope that if the NG crew is unwilling to continue with the films that they use either:

A). Come up with a new crew, or use the Excalibur crew from the New Frontier book series.

or B). Make an "Enterprise" film. Enterprise is the best trek series since TNG, by far.

I really hope that the DS9 and Voyager franchises die the death that they deserve. The only good things that came out of either were a few PC games (namely DS9: The Fallen and Elite Force, both of which were excellent games).

Ok, I was having a discussion about all of this with someone I work with who was at the movie last night…. I don’t understand why there has to be a movie that is exclusive to any of the more recent (with the exclusion of Enpterprise) shows. I mean, they all exist within the same time period more or less (there aren’t a few hundred years between them) so why can’t they do something that incorporates more of all of them? We saw Janeway (sp?) briefly on this one so it seems like there is no reason they couldn’t mix them all into the fray, especially since the crew of NG is sort of spreading out. In future releases it could be a broader story that covers more than just the Enterprise and what is happening with those people. To me it seems that doing this would also open up a lot more in the way of story possibilities and help broaden the future of this franchise.

I was never really a fan of Voyager. I really don’t know why but that one never actually caught on with me. In some ways, I think the underlying story was sort of flawed because they never had the opportunity to develop much in the way of relationships with those around them since they were always traveling away from everything… I don’t know… I liked DS9. I wasn’t all that into it the first season or two but after they started finding ways to get off the space station more often, I thought it picked up a lot…
