A movie where animals are the leads (actually, this will be happening soon, yay)

Where characters sing!!

Where there are signature songs. I mean are we never going to hear another hit such as "Someday My Prince Will Come" or "When You Wish Upon a Star"??

I think this is what's missing from today's films that makes it so Disneyeque and charming.

)Let's see...

Mulan didn't have any exceptional songs, but the films that I just can't stand because they are so music-less as far as Disney-esque goes...

Tarzan
The Emporer's New Groove
Atlantis: The Lost Empire
Lilo and Stitch
Treasure Planet

It's not a good trend!!!

(P.S. Theme park attractions, too!! )

“Walt Disney understood that a song is what people carry away with them. People can go to a Disney picture or park and be enchanted by it, but when they go home, the song is what they keep.”
- Richard Sherman

 :(

It's so true.

Come on Grizz, let's wait til next november and see what kind of stuff Alan Menken has been hiding up his sleeves for the past few years. Hopefully he'll blow us away and show us he still can write those great, magical tunes like what he gave us during this last golden age of Disney Animation. I don't think Alan will let us down. I mean, if you were him, you would definitely make sure that you're return to animated movie songs would show the world you've still got it. I know Home On The Range will decide if Disney goes back to making more musicals, so, well, hope it does good in the box office and hope it's a good movie.

:D :D

'Bears' looks promising. I PRAY that there will be some songs in it. I think they need to put the Shermans together...what do you think? :)

Blue Grass of 'My People'= :snore:

But you should have heard 'Snuff out the Light' that WAS supposed to be in The Emperor's New Groove... oh, that was good.

Yeah, I was wondering if there was any place to hear the songs sting wrote for Kingdom of the Sun that never made it into Emperor's New groove, does anybody know of a place?

i can't wait to see the new stuff Phil Collins does for both the Tarzan broadway show and "Bears".

But come on, Home on the Range might not be terrible.

If you wonder how much music adds to any presentation, just watch C-SPAN. No editing, no music, just straight open camera!

Anyway, music is important to all films, as is editing. What griz and others here are talking about is the unique contribution that music has made to many Disney films over the years. Not all were musicals (nor should they be), but many of the animated classics (even recent ones) did a great job with musicals. They defined genre for a while. In the early 1990s, I even remember reading that some critics thought that the animated feature was now the new Broadway. (Yes, before Disney actually went to Broadway.)

Bottom line is that this is a solid strength for Disney. They need to continually seek out musical and artistic talent to stay fresh and keep the musicals coming. Not to the exclusion of dramas or adventures, but definitely keep them coming. They continue to be the cornerstone of the company.

Many high schools and colleges today have show-choir programs, some of whom are hosted each year at WDW. No reason why even groups such as these could not be enlisted for talent.

Keep things exciting, draw on your strengths even while new strengths develop.

Even though Emperor's New Groove didn't have much singing of people during the movie, I like the score and "My Funny Friend And Me". I listen to 2 Phil Collins songs from Tarzan, Lilo and Stitch I like a couple songs. I also like some of the songs from some newer movies (even a song from Country Bears)

While I enjoy music in a Disney movie, I don't think it's a necessary ingredient. And to say you "Can't Stand" films like Lilo and Stitch because it didn't have an original song? Please...that soundtrack was huge, even if there were no original numbers.

A movie is a movie. I'm not going to pass judgement on it just because it doesn't have an original song.

That's just dumb in my opinion, and a bit much, even for griz.

Good to hear from you, Fievel! Also, I never said I didn't stand Lilo and Stitch..that's probably one of the best features I've seen since the mid-90s. Luckily, there were some great new songs (not major hits), but the film was very enjoyable. But films like "Atlantis" (probably the worst film I've ever seen, and I waited for it to get on DVD)...maybe it could have been better with this component?

However, music is a necessary component in our culture and even in our lives. Especially when it comes to Disney! The parks without music...it's kinda like comparing bread to cake.

(Recalls America Sings, even though he never got to ride it.) As Richard Sherman said, folks can leave a picture or a park...but the song is what they keep!! :)

I honestly think that Disney puts out too many movies in a given year. I remember when they first started doing animated features again with "The Little Mermaid". They did a couple of really good movies a year and you would look forward to going and seeing them. Now, it seems like they are mass produced, with a new movie coming out every other month, and in my opinion the quality has suffered.

It seems more and more that Disney is going to people...instead of people going to Disney.... :veryconfu

Here, here! Only make sequels when it would matter (like Toy Story 2).

Otherwise you tarnish Disney's name, and people begin to associate it with the crap, not just with their better stuff.
