WDWMAGIC Takes the Cake - The Official Cake Talk

Hi there-so I ordered the cake for my friend's birthday last week and wanted to share my experience with the ordering process. We have an ADR at Narccossee so I called the GF bakery on Tuesday 4/28 (they are closed Sunday & Monday) and left a message. I did not receive a call back until Saturday 5/2. Like @JDMom I felt very rushed through the process, and I knew exactly what I wanted! I gave the details of my ADR, was asked if I wanted chocolate or vanilla cake, how to spell my friend's name, and how old she was turning. Oddly enough when I told them 30 they though I wouldn't want the year on the cake. I was given lots of options for fillings and then given a price ( had them do strawberries & custard wish was a tad extra). It was at that point that I asked if the cake could please be in a Mary Poppins theme. I was told they could do a white cake with ruffles and red bows and a white chocolate carousel (for an extra $15). The total quote I was given was $85.

I think I am going to call back next week because I actually have a sketch that I had done that was a little different that what Pat offered. It's a silhouette of the London sky with kites & birds & has a yellow tape measure on the top. I really think either will work, but I did feel very rushed through the call (it lasted less than 3 minutes) especially after waiting so long for a call back. She was in no way rude, and honestly it's my bad for not stepping up and saying "HEY-I have ideas!!!", but I think they are used to guests needing to be directed through the process and quickly, if needed. That being said the price I was quoted was less than I expected, so bonus there I guess?

First off...I'm so glad that everything went well with Pat. Shocked that she was giving lots of options on fillings, but that's really encouraging. Yeah, the fresh fruit is an upcharge, but totally worth it with certain flavors. What's really shocking to me...the cost of the carousel. This is the first time I've seen how much it costs to add it on and it's much cheaper than I thought it would be.

I'd definitely call her back if you have design changes that need to be communicated. It's been a few years since I worked with Pat, but I recall her giving me a fax # to fax over ideas if you want to give her specific images. Like you said though...the price quoted is good! :)

Yes-I was shocked with the filling options after what I read here (I thought it would be a bit of a fight-and it wasn't!). The icing & cake flavor options were only chocolate & vanilla, but she listed off pretty much every filling I've seen listed on here as an option with out me asking, then also listed the berries.

I was really surprised by the cost of the carousel as well. I wanted to get that communicated here as I had not seen it quoted, but all the other white chocolate figures I've seen were more that that, so I was super surprised! I was also pleasantly surprised at the total quote, since I was expecting something over $100, especially including the carousel.

That was exactly how I felt! I agree with the call back. And I relaxed so much after I sent a sketch! Good luck and I hope your cake is wonderful!

Finally ordered a mini cake for next Tuesday night. We're having dinner at the Rose & Crown and then hoping to enjoy Illuminations from the outdoor area. Nothing fancy for the cake. Just vanilla cake with white buttercream and asked them to make it pink & girly for our 5 year old daughter. Quoted $35 plus tax/gratuity. I'll post a picture when we return.

So I've decided to just leave the design as-is. I called back yesterday & left a message to confirm the order (ADR is for Sunday & I leave today-worried I will forget while I am there). Not sure when I will get a call back as it took about 4-5 days last time.

This is a basic 6" and is the stock image from the Contemporary bakery.

NewMK6InchCake.jpg

As for options, they might be able to change the frosting color, but you'd have to see how much that changes the price. Otherwise, they can pipe on accent decorations to give it more pop. See the sample photo of an 8/10" basic cake below to see what I mean...

8or10inch.png

Beyond this, they probably have screen prints that they could add to a 6", 2D edible standups would be an option, as well as 3D chocolate figures. All would add to the cost, but you can email them and try and work out the cost changes for the respective add ons. I've seen them sprinkle the circular edible confetti, I've seen them add little edible mouse ear balloons, and while I don't think they can use the stamps on the buttercream- they can pipe on more whimsical colorful mouse ears. So, just a handful of ideas to get you started.

When ordering a cake, they usually ask for a budget, so if you email before placing your order...you should be able to get a better idea of what you can get for what you want to spend.

Hope this helps. :)

Thank you!
6inch is pretty basic... We don't want loads of specifics just something with the mouse on that's pretty !

Where would I find an email for the contemporary bakery please?

Emailing from UKamd we have plenty of time:)

They certainly can dress up the basic cakes, and from what I've seen, it usually doesn't create a major price increase. While not Mickey, these are some other character examples of how they can take it beyond the basic...

So, just think of the cakes in my previous email as blank canvases with lots of possibilities. :)

As for the Contemporary bakery email...it's actually in what you posted above.

So, I'm procrastinating getting in a workout (probably because I'm exhausted from being up all last night with the storms going through Houston), so I figured I should post some cake pics.

This first one is from the GF bakery. No price though...

anniversarycake.jpg

Next up...a wedding cake...a more vibrant take on the Mickey wave...

mickeyminniewedding.jpg

This next one was delivered to SSR and was $49 - 8". I realize that it's fairly simple, but that's a decent price for that size of a cake with fondant.

vacaycake.jpg

This was $85 from the Contemporary bakery...

snowwhitecake1.jpg

I don't have details on either of these next 2 aside from the first one looks like a 6" and I know the second is a 10"...

piratemickeycake.jpg

minicastlecake.JPG

This one was $65 made by the Contemporary bakery...

princesscake.jpg

Next one is part of the CRT package....

arielcake1.jpg

The next cake was from It's Tasty Too...one of the previously noted offsite bakeries. $135 including delivery...

tinkcake.jpg

And finally, this was $49 from the GF bakery...

starwarscake.jpg

Guess it's time to hit the elliptical.

Does anyone know if they deliver cakes for breakfast too? It's my sister-in-law's birthday while we're down there this year, and I had such a great experience ordering my villain cake from the GF bakery last year that I'd like to do it again this year. On the day of her birthday, we're having breakfast at 'Ohana, and I'd love to order a cake for her then...

Well, this about settles the "should I, or shouldn't I" debate!!!

Can anyone tell me how tall and the diameter of the mini cake?

Thanks much

They don't list the actual dimensions of the minis, but I've heard that the single tier mini offered at the GF is around 4" and I know all of the bakeries that offer the 2-tier minis will just say they feed two. I have never personally ordered a single tier mini, but I have gotten a 2-tier one and I'd say the base is around 4" and the upper tier closer to 3". It felt like it was about 6" high.

I feel a bit ashamed. I was active & then life happened. Well, Disney, life, Disney, life, Disney & now life again. So I'm going to post the pics of my "wedding cake" from our Disneymoon that I promised back in Sep2014. I will go back & catch up on all that I missed. I'll try not to be so neglectful in the future. :p

Pat seemed a little rushed & that's fine. She has lots to do. My only concern was trying to get a pic of Stitch popping out of the cake. Anyone who's had a magic shot taken knows what it looks like. I had to google, save & email it to her. Turns out it's not something the bakeries can do since they don't have all-access to any Disney image.

A bit weird, but Pat came through with something that was just a cute to me. The cake was only $65. She quoted $60 for a 3 layer 8", but that was with a printed pic, not the 2D cut out. Also, given that she added a beautiful flower & lights? I was ecstatic at the results. Filling was 1/2 Bavarian Cream & 1/2 Caramel Milk Chocolate Mousse. I did ask for "Happily Ever After" to be written on the cake. Having it on a piece of white chocolate that I got to peel off & eat was such a bonus. It was supposed to serve 8, but we noshed on it every night for over 2 weeks. (It even made it home!) The server at Narcoossee's actually left it off the bill. She was so thankful that we asked to have it added on. (I don't think that normally happens.) It was a bit funny, but she initially told us that it was on there when we brought it to her attention.

Back from our trip! We had two cakes this trip, one that I ordered & one that my friend's husband ordered.

First is from the GF Bakery. 6" vanilla with vanilla buttercream & strawberry & custard filling. It was delish. I had been quoted $85 for this (with a white chocolate carousel on top) but was charged $92. I think they ended up doing just one horse plus the poppy because it was such a small cake. I was suprised that this resulted in an up-charge vs a slight decrease in price. Either way I was thrilled with the results & so was my friend.
image.jpg

The second cake was a sweet surprise from my friend's husband. But I do wish he would had kept me in the loop on this one. He had it delivered to our reservation at the Garden Tea Room...where all the options include dessert. So unfortunately this never got eaten! We both felt very wasteful, but we were sooooo full (and my friend wasn't into digging into it late at night-although I TOTALY would have!!) I believe this was standard 6" $20-something cake with vanilla cake & vanilla buttercream, but I did not ask.
