WDW to Build New North Entrance to Property

An interesting update on this. Two permits were filed today for the area where the new north entrance is rumored to go, one contractor is MLC Themeing and the other is WDW Facility Asset Management, both expire 7/3/2015. The image below shows the work area. The article posted here in early February said that the move of the facilities in this area would start in March. What I find odd is that these permits don't seem to be for demolition of these buildings.

I don't see how they could build a gate there. That's literally right next to West Clock (CM Parking lot) and way too close to backstage facilities than i'd think Disney would want guests to go by.

They clearly have (or had) plans to put in road there that connects to Floridian Way, but I agree I don't think it will be a guest entrance, probably just for CM use.

This ^^. It will be like the current Center Drive through the shop area and going by the Contemporary. Intended for Cast not guests. It will not add an entrance to the MK.

The outlined buildings are modular. A couple of friends and I could knock them down with a backhoe. It would not take skilled labor or a lot of equipment. I have been in the buildings with a cast friend. So It may be Disney is going to take them down with in house staff. They are currently obviously empty and all the lots adjacent have been cleared of vehicles and the like. Drove by there today.

I intend to create a whole section of my website dedicated to utopian city experiments. One good one to look up in the meanwhile is Brasilia, Brazil!

EDIT - Wouldn't that be ghostly if Disney decided to build an EPCOT Center theme park in the Brasilia area for its Brazil park (instead of a Magic Kingdom). The Brazil version of EPCOT would mimic the layout of Walt's EPCOT city and would be one big Future World and would have the liberty of borrowing Magic Kingdom attractions such as Space Mountain.

I've always thought that Disneyland Paris should have been an EPCOT park instead of a Magic Kingdom park. The Europeans would have meshed with an EPCOT better.

That's what is odd, just doesn't seem like the kind of work these contractors would do.

Would they still need a permit for anything internal? If they're not building the road after all, they might still be moving Cast Connection but using the building for other purposes, which might require remodelling perhaps?

Yes, If I saw these permits knowing nothing else about what is going on back there, this is exactly what I would assume.

I think it may actually be intended for both cast and guests. There has been an enormous amount of residential development north of the MK in Windermere and Winter Garden, going back at least 10+ years. The area is rebounding very strongly after the last recession with thousands of housing units having been built and more and more active residential and commercial development. The orange groves of the 70s, 80s, and 90s are mostly disappearing.

While the small sign at Reams Rd. and Center Dr. may indicate that entrance is for "Guest, Cast, and Business Invitees", currently Center Drive in the service area is heavily used , and traffic backs up quite often (and to be honest, there is no way to ever enforce who has access). This additional entrance would allow folks going to/from the MK CM lots, Disney U., and the north service areas to use Center Dr., and all others going to any other part of property to use the possible new entrance just a bit to the west, bypassing all that traffic. It also allows for traffic flow during fireworks launch times.

I wouldn't expect any big welcome arches or anything, but I could see this simply being a road onto property that anyone could feasibly use. Not that they would care, but there is nothing to prevent some landscaping to hide backstage a bit better. And if a small "Cast, Guest, and business invitees" sign appears, it will go unheeded, and unenforced anyway.

Not sure about that, I don't think World Showcase quite works when many of the real countries are so close.
Here in the UK, its quite common for people to go across the channel to europe even just for the day. If you live in certain parts of France, then Germany, Netherlands, Belgium, Switzerland etc are little more than a short drive.

Different countries would have worked - not necessarily a carbon copy of EPCOT in Florida.

Well said and very feasible. Point of clarification on the entrance sign, it states "WDW Resort Guests" among the others. So, I am assuming anyone staying on property, going golfing, attending a wedding at the Grand Floridian, Golden Oak residents, or a passholder/ticket holder of any kind is welcome to use Center Drive and Floridian Way.

I really dislike this. The road behind the MK should be cast only and enforced. Everything back there is supposed to be not visible to guests as if it didn't even exist. Sending people right next to it is a big mistake. It doesn't matter if housing has developed back there or not. Hop on the Western Beltway and get off at Western Way. Done.

They can use RFID to manage guests (well, they kind of can), so it's not a huge stretch to say they should be able to use RFID to provide access to cast member's cars as well. If third party contractor vehicles need access back there as well, provide them with an RFID tag.

Actually, they use "Guest" to mean anyone who is welcome to enter the property, including any and all paying Guests or visitors of the parks and resorts.

Those signs (there's one on Sherberth Road, too) are essentially just a legal obligation. It's to state that you are entering private property and that X, Y and Z are the only people welcome on it. This essentially means that anyone they've "trespassed" from property by filing paperwork with the Sherriff's office is *not* welcome on their property.
The signs, along with the giant welcome archway signs, are so that anyone they've trespassed can't say "oh, I was driving down this random back road and didn't realize I'd entered Disney property".

I am hoping some of the locals we have on the board can keep an eye on this area and let us know if there is any evidence of the buildings being removed.

Read this whole thread. Really enjoy the historical facts you guys are sharing. Very interesting to learn how and why WDW is what it has become over the last 50 years.
