WDW Space mountain

ok, im a disney fan and an AP holder at all the parks as i spend much time in both SoCal and Orlando. anyway i grew up on the WDW space mountain and after the recent update to DL's space mountain i started thinking. As a child we always had AP's to WDW and went all the time. My father was a SM affficanado and would ride it multiple times every visit.

My mother on the other hand was scared to death of the ride. She had ridden right after it opened and had a bad seatbelt and was restained by other passengers in the car... She recalled to me that at opening it had an inital drop that was very far and very steep and resembled the statue out in front of the ride.

Unfortunately i have not been able to find any info on this track layout.. as i am very interested in how the changes were made. Did this exist or was it an illusion in my mothers head. the only reference i found was in a george mcginnis article where he referenced that the track was redesigned several times after opening due to guests complaining about the negative g's (which would make sense with the drop) but that is only a passing reference.

Help?

A friend of mine was recently on the People Mover ride as it went through Space Mountain, and SM had broken down. She got to see the entire layout as they had the interior of Space Mountain lit up for repairs. Things like that never happen to me!!!

Rob, did you recently mention this over at The Horizons Tribute? George answered incase you havn`t seen his reply. SM never had a drop anywhere near as steep as this. I think the early re designs were only to smooth out a few minor `bumps` where you would leave your seat as you rode over the crest a bit too much. There vertainly havn`t been any major re designs in 31 years.

BTW, welcome to WDWMagic!
