WDW ! So Near,And Yet So Far.!

We are a 6 hour drive from WDW, and we typically only go once a year - mainly because we like to go to the beach several times a year as well, but that is changing lately. I can pretty much guarantee that if we lived closer we would go more frequently, but I do worry about burnout. My wife is constantly after me to move us all closer to Orlando...

We met some folks in WDW during our last trip who were from Clearwater/Tampa area, and they had driven over just for the weekend - I could see the wheels in the wife's head turning! I kinda like the once a year thing as it keeps it from becoming too familiar, but we've thought about retiring down there one day. (And by "retire" I mean "move down there and keep working until I keel over" :D)

In my experience, absence really does make the heart grow fonder... This last trip I really appreciated and brought back some of the lost magic. I think it would have been different if I went every year or more (Egads, I don't even know how anyone can afford multiple trips... I'd rather save and take the trip I want rather than stretch my budget so thin). But anyways, every 2-3 years is honestly perfect in my eyes. And leaves room to go to different places in the off years.

I think if I lived closer, I would go more, but I also suspect that feeling of staleness would creep in all the more

Honestly, for folks who are thinking of moving to Orlando just for Disney - well, don't. Unless you're old and retiring and have nowhere else you desire to be, then go for it. It gets dull pretty quick once you go every so often. I've been going once a week but I needed a huge break from it because I started falling asleep on some rides.

I have had yearly passes for 16 years and I always fill the magic when I enter the parks. I am also lucky enough that my youngest is now working at the park so we go every other weekend and I cant wait to here her stories and just soak in all the magic I can. It never gets old

Everyone is different with this...when I lived in FL, just a few hrs or so to the north, we went fairly regularly. It still held a magic for me, but it also wasn't the same. I really think I needed that long hiatus I took after my '98 trip w/DH to rediscover the magic.

@luv said it best... when you go a lot its just different. You do not have to rush around.. You do not have to worry about getting to the next ride... You make reservations but not every meal/day. You relax more. Its almost like you do not have the pressure of the vacation that some feel.
Because I am a school teacher I only go the busiest times of the year.. So the answer to your question @real mad hatter for us would be... We have learned to enjoy the moment.. enjoy the crowds... enjoy the atmosphere and not let anyone else steal our magic... ;)

Used to live in Michigan...moved to Florida...moved back to Michigan. We got AP's to WDW when we first moved to FL and went for a day or weekend trip every couple of months and it definitely changes the way you visit the parks. When we lived in Michigan and would take a VACATION to WDW you would get the build up and anticipation before the trip, the planning, the excitement, etc. Our days would be jam-packed and we would try and do everything we possibly could. When we moved and were able to go pretty regularly we slowed down considerably. No longer were we killing ourselves to do everything because we knew we could (and would) come back anytime. There were days where we would go to 3 (even all 4 parks) and do maybe 1 or 2 attractions at each park.

It was great being able to pick up go any time we wanted but it loses the "wow" factor pretty quickly. We just recently moved back to Michigan and our last trip as locals was pretty emotional but we are very, VERY excited to get back to vacationing at WDW instead of just a day or two trip.

It's a "grass is greener" situation. When you can't go as often you after being a local being able to pop in to Epcot for dinner and when you are a local you long for the days of counting down to your vacation and spending every waking second in the parks.

Good for you! My mom is a teacher too, so as a kid we only ever went in the summer and it wasn't until I was an "adult" :), that I went in September and realized that every day at WDW is not wall to wall people.

Any reason to get out of Michigan would create excitement especially this time of year. Just kidding.:p

I lived in Orlando for 5 years. The drive to WDW for me was only about 20 minutes. I went several times, but not as often as you may think a Disney fan would go. Now, I live in north Alabama and trips to WDW are more exciting for me. I'm glad I don't live as close anymore. It's so much more magical now.

I live in Michigan and my wife and I have talked about moving south to be closer to the Magic and to get away from the lovely weather this state has and we have been going to Disney regularly for the past 13 years mostly multiple times a year and this year is the first year it seems more of a hassle than what its worth. So it would be way cheaper if I lived closer, it would loose that WOW factor for me since its happening and i live 1300 miles away.

We go as often as we can. We have seasonal passes staying away in summer and school vacations. When you go in the middle of the week and the park is less full it is so relaxing and enjoyable. We don't rush to and fro. We go on the rides that we want and if it is too long of a wait we move on.
I love going and it is a different feeling each time.
Always remember to be the child that is inside each of us and I do believe that every trip you take be it once a year or 12 times a year will be unforgettable if you allow it to be.
