pointless
While some form of security may be necessary, the security searches at the front of the gates are pointless.
Anyone who wanted to bring something "bad" into the parks would not be deterred by someone with a blue baseball cap and a 6 inch wooden stick.
People do not go to or return to amusement parks because they feel safe, they go to feel amused. (My apologies to those who consider it blasphemous to refer to Disney as an "amusement" park. I really meant "theme park.") I am willing to bet that, all other things being equal, attendence rates would not change if the security searches were removed.
The searches are a waste of time and man-power. They are a high inconvenience for guests visiting during the summer. Not only are the parks more crowded, but it tends to rain on a daily basis. And does Disney provide shelter for guests forced to stand 5 to 10 minutes in line waiting to be checked? Of course not.
Whether or not Disney is a "private" organization some level of privacy must exist on behalf of the guests. At the airport, where people are most likely to have "bad" items with "bad" intentions, bag searches are nevertheless performed behind a small wall or curtain to ensure the privacy of the passenger. Does Disney take any such consideration for their guests in this matter? Of course not. If I wanted to bring an "adult toy" into the Magic Kingdom, I believe that doing so would not violate any of their security measures. However, should I be required to remove it in front of 50 strangers? Of course not.
And let's not get started on the security employees themselves. Let's not get into the situation where a lady when shopping in a Downtown Disney giftshop, while holding a piece of merchandise, stepped "beyond the cashier" in order to grab her 3 year old daughter who was walking away from her. Let's not address the security lady's intelligence as she insisted that the police be contacted because this mother took a few steps forward in order to hold on to her daughter so that she would not wander off. Let's not get into how Disney's street sweepers afford much more of my respect and how they would probably score much higher on standard IQ tests than Disney's security personel.
When I think of Disney's security staff, three words come to mind:
equal, opportunity, employer
So I suppose I should applaud the Disney company after all
