WDW misconceptions...need your help!

i have to write a paper by Tuesday. unfortunately, i'm totally uninspired. the only thing i can think of writing about is Disney World and the many misconceptions that people who have never been tend to have.
for example, there's a lady in my ceramics class who found out how fond i am of Disney World. we've been talking quite often about WDW. she's never been. one day i was talking to her about the Disney resorts and staying on property, and she asked me if they were like Hyatt (sp?) resorts. she had absolutely no clue that each resort had its own theme (not that i expected her to know that). she also thought that music from Disney movies played all the time in every park (she's at least the second person i've come across who thinks that)
of course, i can't write a full paper on just two misconceptions. so, i'm asking you fine people...what WDW misconceptions have you all heard? mainly from people who have never been (or have been very little) and just don't know any better. any help you can contribute is very much appreciated!!

I'm actually planning a trip down to Disney with some of my friends in the summer. We're planning on staying there for a week, with maybe 5 days spent on property. My friend was complaining that there was "nothing to do in Disney for that long." He had only been one time, many years ago, so he didn't know that they have 4 different theme parks... water parks... minature golf... downtown disney... etc.... So I guess the main misconception my friend has is that Disney is meant for young kids, and there's not much stuff that will appeal to older teenagers or young adults... which, as well know, is quite un-true!! I hope this helps!! Good luck with your paper :)

Hmm.. I know a big one is that WDW is only for kids, or families w/little kids.

I sell WDW passes at work and a lot of people think you can see everything at WDW in one or two days.

A lot of people think staying on-site means you are staying IN the parks.

A lot of people think Universal Studios is part of WDW.

I'll try to think of some more. -Steph

Here's a few:

-Disney World is just for kids

-DisneyLAND is in Florida

-Walt Disney owns it

-Everyone who works there is gay

-It's not worth the money

These are a few I've heard from different people. It's hard not to just tell people off when they say this.

I think by far, the most common misconception people have is the size of the resort. Even when given maps, they look at Epcot, Magic Kingdom, MGM, etc., and think you can actually walk between them. I have been on several trips with first timers and the most common thing I hear is 'wow - I never expected the parks to be this large'.

For some reason, I've heard that one many ,many times. Not that everyone who works there is gay, but that most of the executives and upper management are gay.

I really don't know what makes the minds of some people tick. :hammer: That's one rumor (luckily) that I haven't heard - how absurd!

Don't forget:

Walt's body is kept cryogenically stored under the MK.

The MK is "Disney World," while everything else is separate. (Ex: "We went to Epcot on Friday and Disney World on Saturday.")

The monorail runs to MGM.

No one has ever been declared dead on property. (This may be more of a tangent than you want to go off on.)

ET, Jaws, and Back to the Future can all be found at MGM.

More if I can think of them...

Yes - this is a major source of confusion for some. I know people who go regularly that STILL get MGM/Disney confused with Universal.

Some people assume that Disney owns all the hotels on ground (Swan and Dolphin not owned by Disney).

That you can ride the monorail to anywhere on property or to the airport is another few I've heard.

That Disney is willing to let you leave with a few dollars in your pockets. :animwink:

I've heard people say that Epcot IS Spaceship Earth. Or more accurately "Epcot is that big silver ball thing, isn't it?"

Also, my Dad's family always used to tell him that WDW is nothing but a bunch of $10 hot dog stands and it costs $10,000 to go. Which is why I didn't get there until I was an adult and went by myself. Stupid family!

LOL that is funny, there is a lot of gay hourly cm and regular management but I think upper management is pretty straight and narrow.

People think that Splash Mt. is all inside that Mountain.

People think that a roller coaster is inside Spaceship Earth.

People think that all the fireworks are the same.

People think that it's called MGM.

People think that Walt Disney is frozen.

People think that Magic Kingdom is just for little kids.

People think that Cinderella Castle is a Missile Silo.

People think that Walt Disney lived in the castle.

People think that the Prince of Egypt is a Disney movie.

People think that the Magic Kingdom is on the ground.

People think that Tower of Terror is scary. (That one's debatable)

"We're deciding between going to Universal or Disney World - since they're pretty much the same - just amusement parks"

"Disney owns MGM"

"How do they cram that whole Haunted House ride into that little house on the hill?"

"Disney World is just for kids....EPCOT is boring and only educational....MGM is pretty much the same as Universal....Animal Kingdom is just a big zoo" (the AK part is debatable)

"Disney hotels are just overpriced versions of the ones on 192"

"Disney will expand the monorail system someday"

"All the parks have fireworks each night - you've seen one, you've seen them all!"

"We're going to Disneyland, in Florida"

"Disneyland and Disney World are pretty much the same"

"It's pretty cheap to go there"
