WDW in the rain

My Favorite Rain memory took place bout a few months ago during my senior trip. It only became such a great memory because of the people I was with.

We where in Epcot on our first few hours of disney during a complete downpour. and of course everything was wet and so where the paths. we started to notice kids all over the park dragging there feet and such. we dubbed it as "rain skating" that was the day that I realized that alot of the surfaces in disneyworld are actually very slippery. It was so funny because everyone was doing it! Even when we went to magic kingdom that day.

2. New Years Eve 2002: It poured and poured and poured. At one point I was upset my jeans got wet from a puddle. But what an understatement. I was wringing water out of my hair and clothes that night.

Thats exactly the night I was referring to in my "rainy day" post!! What a great night!!! I'm glad someone else remembers that night so fondly!

I was also surprised that the park (MK) remained so full, despite the downpour. Those NYE fireworks are so amazing though, so it was worth staying. I just love NYE at Disney!

Two Stories:

The first one is similar to someone else's. We were in Tomorrowland and down came the most furious rain - mostly sideways due to the wind. We immediately headed to TTA and took a trip around. When we were heading back to Unload, it started raining completely sideways, soaking us in the car - so we decided another trip would be a better choice than getting off. We ended up circling about 5 times without getting off. Then, like the other person said, people caught on and we had to Unload/Load each time. It was almost impossible to push thru the hundreds of people hiding under that roof - plus the 6" deep puddles at the bottom of the ramps. Very wet day.

The other was on a Wednesday morning in June. My bro and I were riding the Ferry over to the TTC from MK - just touring property and goofing off. I think a mini hurricane rolled in at about 1030am (or so it seemed) so we stayed on the Ferry for a return trip - to wait it out. Apparently, the next trip back to the TTC was the last for the morning, because they headed for the far right dock - not part of the Load/Unload area. The Captain came down to disembark and saw us standing down there and said, "Oh geez - I thought everyone was off. Whoops" and laughed about it. We walked off the boat with him, down the sidewalk, over some ropes and up the ramp. Everyone was staring at us like we were VIP or something, coming from the side dock on our very own boat. Thank God the "hurricane" had stopped by then.

i love this idea...good one. :)

i think my favorite was when i went with my boyfriend during a spring break...his first trip to wdw. we spent the first day at ak for the afternoon, but after we finished everything he decided he wanted to go see the magic kingdom & tomorrowland. as soon as we walked through the gate, it began to rain. we dashed to tomorrowland & bought ponchos, and the first picture i took that evening is one of him in his Mickey poncho, loaded down with a drink strap & beltbag like a wdw pro, and pouting like a toddler. it's adorable.

Summer 1985, Disneyworld's 15th anniversary. I remember walking with the family on a hot July day through World Showcase from Mexico to Canada. As we were making our way past Germany to the American Pavillion, I noticed the fife and drum corps marching by.

Had to take a picture. So, I fished out my camera and turned around and focused on the crew. What I saw was not only the fife and drum corps, but this huge serverly dark gray thundercloud.

About five minutes later we all moved into the American Pavillion to wait out the shower and catch the show.

Nothing spectacular, rain is rain and sometimes hard and fierce, but the photo is worth a thousand words. I've gotta get it out and scan it and post it here.

Last August our last day in Orlando was the day Charlie hit. Luckily, we had an early enough flight that it wasn't cancelled.

We were sitting in the plane, on the runway (saying "Please take-off, please take-off") when the winds hit and they shut down our engines. The trees outside were practically bent in half! Our kids (4 and 7 then) were asking us what was going on, and we were trying hard not to scare them, so we were like "Oh, it's just some rain". Then there was a small break in the wind and we took off! Just in time!:sohappy:

I heard nightmare stories from people who were stuck there when it hit and then trying to get out that weekend. The airport terminals were flooded in parts!

Hurray for our luck!

we must have flown out just before you! We had a layover in Atlanta on our way back to chicago, and as we were getting ready to board in atlanta, the hurricane hit Orlando intl! we were very lucky as well, and had a perfectly timed flight!

my best memory of the rain was in August of 2000. My two very good friends got to come along on the family trip. The three of us had the day to ourselves, and it was an E-ticket night. so we spent ALL day in MK, hanging out, seeing everything (one of the gals had never been to WDW), despite the rain. The crowd was a bit heavy by 4pmish, but we did the rides with little to no wait during that time. About 6 pm, the rain started coming down again, and everyone left the park. We had dinner at 8 pm at Cindy's castle, and stuck around to watch the fireworks from the round table.(it was raining, no lightning). we got our e-ticket wrist bands, and proceded to have the park nearly to ourselves for 3 hours. I talked with a CM that gave us the wristbands, and he said that only 1000 or so bought e-tickets, and from what he could tell, only about 60% or so picked up their wristbands. We rode space mountain several times, and splash mountain 4 times in a row! it was amazing.

And on our way out of the park, we jumped in every puddle along the way! By the time 11 pm came around, the rain had let up to a drizzle, and between the rain, the puddle jumping, and splash mountain, we were soaked for a better part of 4 hours!

They closed the parks early on account of the imminent arrival of Jeanne. We had spent the day in Epcot, and weren't ready to call it a day yet. So my mom and I decided to ride the monorail over to the MK and the TTC. While we waited for it to arrive we struck up a great comversation with a CM, and when I asked if we could ride up front with the driver, he arranged it for us! Mom and I rode all the way over to the MK in the pouring down rain and wind from an approaching hurricaine - and then the giddyness got to us and we started singing rain related songs - the monorail driver probably thought we had completely lost it! :p

It was so amazing to fly along in the rain up on the monorail... and such a great memory!

2 years ago my boyfriend and I were caught in a huge storm one afternoon at Epcot. It was raining sooo hard that we knew making a run for the monorail would result in getting drenched from head to toe. This was our frist trip together so we didn't know they sold ponchos so I asked one of the maintenance CMs for 2 garbage bags. I then proceeded to poke a hole for my head and two for the arms. I then made one for my boyfriend. Cheap ponchos yes, efficient no. The CM was dying of laughter as we made a run for it. Unfortunately I made the head hole way too big so all this water got in anyways, but it was fun running and laughing with garbage bags on and running through puddles near the Leave a Legacy section. We thought we each looked so funny we took pictures to commemorate the attempt :)

Another time was during Francis last year. After being cooped up at the Poly for more than 24 hours we decided to escape. We left our longhouse (this time with ponchos!) and made a run for it jumping over puddles and flying leaves and branches to go to the arcade to play Ms. Pacman. I felt like we were on a mission or something :) Yes, we were that bored!

My favorite rain memory was on Christmas eve(im not sure of the year, '01 maybe).. It was freezing, maybe like 30's or 40's.. Then it starts to pour and just wouldnt stop.. There was some minor flooding in the parks... Some of family stepped in this huge puddle.. It was the first christmas in florida experience.. Definately will never forget it..

thanks for replying everyone! hey, here's a semi-related question

while going through some old things at my parent's house, i came up on a pre-MGM Studios era rain poncho (it only has the castle and Spaceship Earth on it) still in its sealed wrapper.

think its worth anything?

When my wife an I were there on one of our trips, we stopped to eat at EL Pirata Y Perico (did I get that right? the Mexican place in Adventureland. Its been too long.... :-( ), just as it started to rain. We sat and ate while we watched everyone else run for cover. It was still raining after we finished, so we decided to walk over to Pirates, since we could get there under the overhang where the jewlery vendors usually setup.

When we got to the ride, there was a huge crowd of people hovering under the covered outdoor queue area, but NOBODY was going inside. There was no wait, and we practically had the boat to ourselves. (I thik there was one other couple in the boat). It may have been my imagination, but seemed like the boats where running slower than usual, too, so it ended up being a really relaxing, fun experience. When the ride was over, the rain had stopped. We had a great hour, and never once got wet!

Another interesting time was after 9/11. The parks were already empty, then they had a tropical storm also! We walked through Epcot, and one of the CM mention to us that there were less than 1,000 people in Epcot! It was like have our own Epcot day!

I remember that vacation very vividly. First day of vacation was 9/11 then to top it off the Tropical storm hit two days later and we had voicemails on our room phone advising us of the storm. I remember packing the kid and hubby off to MGM and it was absolutely dead. Enjoyed getting on rides with no wait.

That same trip I remember being caught in the Judge's Tent in Toon Town and having a blast shopping and meeting the characters...my daughter was only 11 months at the time and was scared of them all, so I got some wonderful time spent with them by myself...not any more though...same kid is almost 5 and cannot get enough Disney.

My family's last trip, September 2003, we were waiting for Wishes and it started to rain, I mean a heavy rain. We didn't move from our bench, with our rain gear on, we sat and laughed at how people ran from the rain, or things that people use to shield them from the rain. Plus we sat and laughed at the silly shoes that people wear to the park. Out of the seven days we spent at Disney that night was the best, and the best old belly laughs one can have!

When I went in WDW in December of 2003, the day we went to Epcot was the rainest Disney day I'd ever seen. We were all wearing ponchos and jeans and sweatshirts--but we were able to do almost every ride without any wait at all! I walked through the queue of M:S without any delays. The only thing we couldn't ride was TT, because part of it is outside--but when the rain cleared up later in the day, the ride opened again and the parks were still pretty empty! I love WDW in the rain...

In 2000, I was down in the World with my then Girlfriend. (now she's my wife). We were at AK on a very cold rainy day in early January right as the park openend. I barely saw 20 other people at the front gate waiting for entry.

Anyway, we were chatting with the CM manning the turnstile and he gave us a hint to head straight for Camp Minnie-Mickey for something special.

Of course, we went off in that direction when absolutely EVERY other guest entering the park headed off towards the main attractions to start riding.

When we got to Camp Minnie-Mickey, we were really suprised to see Mickey and Minnie (dressed in their safari outfits) just walking around with only one CM assistant between the two of them.

(For those who visit regularly, you know that it's really uncommon for Mickey and/or Minnie to walk around. They usually have them stationary in one spot and a line forms to come to them for security reasons and safety reasons.)

My GF and I were able to hang out with Minnie and Mickey and litereally walk down the street holding hands with them with NO OTHER GUESTS around as far as I could see!!

I doubt I'll ever get a chance to do that again!!!
