WDW in May? How is it?

I'm thinking of planning a trip to WDW in May 09. I have never gone this time of year.. I made the mistake of going in late August of 08 and had the entire trip rained out by TS Faye. We were really disappointed with the weather and how it ruined our vacation.. yet, a day after we got home it was great weather, sunny, and really ideal! :hammer:

How is the weather, crowds.. I see that Space Mountain will probably be closed if we went then. I want to take advantage of this deal they have going.

Thanks,
Bryant

It can be beautiful or hot (but usually the super high humidity hasn't set in by then yet). Crowds, I would call moderate (though school hasn't let out so children are not omnipresent). It's a great time of year to go; we usually make a May trip ourselves.

We've made several trips in May--in fact, we were just there in May 2008. It's our second favorite time to go, next to November. The weather was beautiful this time, as it usually is (although on one or two trips in the past, we've had occasional showers--usually just short ones that don't disrupt the day very much at all).

Crowd levels are very manageable in May; not too long a wait for anything. This time, it was more crowded, but still not a long wait for most attractions. I think the only ride we Fastpassed was Test Track, but unfortunately we weren't able to do Soarin' because of an hour-plus wait, and the Fastpass time didn't work for us. Of course, I don't think it's possible to find a non-busy time any more anyway, thanks to all the promotions, the dining plan, etc.

If you can swing it, I'd definitely recommend early May over late in the month.

We go just about every year the last week of April or first week of May. This is a wonderful time to go. The crowds are minimal and except for the newest attractions (ie. Soarin') this is virtually no wait. The temp can sometimes be a little on the cool side, but not enough to keep me out of the pool, but residents are wearing long sleeves. Except for the extra magic that combining Christmas with Disney brings in the November and December months it is really the best time to go.

I Agree...

I agree completely with this post. My DW and I were also there this past May and really enjoyed ourselves. While it was a bit warm and humid at times, it was manageable. We went specifically that time of the year because we wanted to attend the Flower and Garden Festival at EPCOT. The end of May is also our wedding anniversary so that was my excuse. We took the opportunity to travel without the kids because we are new “empty nesters”. Both kids are in college now and hey…”You guys have classes!” Oh well… We had a blast! We actually drove this time from PA instead of flying. We stopped in Savannah for two nights on the way down and stayed at a great B&B. It was a very romantic trip. We always wanted to see that city. Anyway, we love May…but the week after Thanksgiving has it’s pluses as well. That will be our 2009 trip…this time over Thanksgiving into that week with the family. WOOOHOOO!:sohappy:

We have gone the second week in May the past two years. The weather was perfect, avg. temp in the mid 80's. Only rained one afternoon in the two years we went. Very manageable crowd levels, we were able to walk right on most rides. The Flower and Garden Festival at Epcot is great. It might be a little busier with the 4/3 promotion going on. Although, maybe not with the economy struggling. We think it is a great time to go.

Ditto

We always go in early may (first week)...agree with what everyone else has said...the one thing that noone has mentioned is the potential for LOVE BUGS!!!...sometimes they are out and annoying...sometimes no problem at all.....

Some of the schools have let out by then so perhaps a beginning of higher crowd levels with the advent of the beginnings of Summer vacation.

DH and I have gone multiple times in May... and we really enjoy that time of year. (Of course our first May trip was our honeymoon... so our opinion on that one may be a bit biased! :animwink:) We generally are there over Memorial Day weekend chaperoning the senior class trip. The weather is usually wonderful... it can get a bit warm during the day and there's always the afternoon Florida showers... but on the whole it's very pleasant. The crowds we've always found to be manageable... and we're often there at a time when several school groups are also there. Go for it!

We went the beginning of May for our one trip. That was the best time we went. The crowds were not bad, weather was beautiful. We had a great time. Would go that time of year again but going over Christmas this year, dreading the crowds but always wanted to see it over Christmas and that is the only week I can make it this year.

Anyway, highly recommend that time of year.

We have gone to WDW the 1st week in May many times and the weather and crowds have always been great (warm, sunny, low crowds.) I think it is my favorite time at WDW (but March or Jan is my favorite time not to be home and escape winter.) Less things seem to be closed for rehab at that time (then say Jan, Feb or March) and many of the new things that are opening seem to be ready by then too.

There is always good deals that time of year too.

I think the later in May you go, the hotter and busier it gets. So go as early in May as you can.

we will be there May 9-16..can't wait...we have always gone in either October or December. Both were GREAT...October due to low crowds, GREAT weather, plus child was in a year round school at that time, so when he was out of school, all others were in! December was good...weather was not bad...got cool at night,,but we are always anxious to try another time of year...with the deal they were offering, we could not pass it up for May!!! After hearing all of your comments, we really can't wait to go now!!!

No! No! Don't listen to them, they tell lies! May is a terrible time to go, trust me!! Just kidding, I just don't want everyone else finding out how nice May is and driving the crowds up. We have been going down mid May for our anniversary for about 7 years now. The crowds are light, if a wait time is more than 15 min. it's rare. The weather is usually pretty nice and sometimes even water park warm. And the Flower & Garden Show is still going on. We'll be there this year from the 16th to the 23rd at the POLY! ! Thank you 3 free day deal.

My birthday is May so I've been going every may for the past 5 years, and I wouldn't do that just for my birthday! Low crouds (not the lowest ever, but still, your lookin at no more then 20 minutes on most major attractions), as for the weather im not sure, it doesnt rain everyday so just plan your days around raun (if there is supposed to be any), but definatally during the begining of may we dont really get rained out, I've lived in south florida for my whole life, i personally think its cool in may (anything under 90 is cool to me), its gonna b like in the 80s so its great weather to walk around without it being too hot, or you getting too cold from the water rides, and you can go to the water parks, hotel rates are also pretty good during this time and now during the hard disney economic times, just wait it out for a deal, b/c they're bound to drop that on us next (after the 4 for 3 deal).

....just my two pennies....

May is a great time to go. We have been there three times in May. [first or second week.] It has always been warm enough for the pools and water parks. Have a great time.
