President of Progress City
Team Disney Proudly Presents:
Main Street, USA

Main Street U.S.A.

When the first Main Street, USA opened in Disneyland in 1955, it represent aspects of Walt Disney childhood home at the turn of the century. Walt Disney was quoted saying this about Main Street: “For those of use who remember the carefree time it recreates, Main Street will bring back memories. For those younger visitors, it is an adventure in turning back the calendar to the days of their grandfather’s youth”. While Main Street, USA in Walt Disney World is not a exact replica its still embodies this core value and imagery that Walt had picture for Disneyland. For this re-imagining of the Magic Kingdoms Main Street, USA Team Disney wanted to remain true to this, and every aspect of this re-imagined Main Street embodies Walt Disney’s statement.

disneylandparismainstre.jpg

Pulling from the original concept art for Main Street USA, in Disneyland Paris, we decided to maintain the Americana hometown feel that the Main Street has provided its guest for over 40 years. Rolling the early-20th-century small-town feel forward, we decided to give a Leave It Beaver hometown by giving Main Street, USA a 50’s facelift.

downtown50s_zpsa8689edb.jpg

The word facelift, however, is not to be taken lightly, this re-imagining of Main Street, USA will be one largest expansions in the history of the Magic Kingdom with the addition of two new attraction, a re-imagined attraction, a new meet and greet pavilion, prime firework viewing locations, three new restaurants, and two new VIP locations. The master plan below shows the vast changes made to Main Street USA.

Plaza SunBoats:
070121001.jpg

As a nod to the past, we at Team Disney decide to bring back a classic attraction to the Magic Kingdom and Main Street, USA. Utilizing the water ways around the hub, the Swan Boats will take guest on a 15 to 17 minute journey around the hub and Swiss Family Treehouse. The ride will include 12 brand-new Swan Boats style after the original but with a modern flare. Instead of operating on a natural gas engine, the new boats will have an eco friendly approach with the us of a Lithium Ion battery (seal in a water proof contain for obvious reasons) and high efficiency solar panels for charging and maintaining the battery. Running the batteries along the floor of the boat will keep the weight low and center increasing balance and stability for guest.

Walt’s College:

Replacing Town Square Theatre will be a building with a small town college facade know as Walt's College. Walt's College will be a two story attraction that magnifies what is currently in Town Square Theater. The first floor will be dedicated to the study of history, with models of the original park designs, art work and other assorted items related to Disney's history including the original Partners statue that currently sits in front of the Magic Kingdom(A newer version will be described later). The second floor will be dedicated to Art when guest can dive into famous Disney scenes, see original artwork from classic and modern Disney movies and take a peak into the future of Disney Parks.

Meet and Greet:

Tucked away on the North side of Bradbury Lane, the Science Theater has the fab five are actively preparing for a stage show where they take viewer into the world of science. Lucky for guest, they have a little bit spare time to come back stage and meet their fans. This new meet and greet pavilion will give guest a once and a life time opportunity to interact with Mickey and his friends in a way that has never been done before. From 9 am to 12 pm the Fab will be in this Pavilion to greet guest in a new and exciting interactive meet up. Using the magic of the MyMagic+ and parental wizardry, each guests favorite character will personally well the guest by name as they enter. The same will occur to say good night to guest from 7 pm to 10 pm in the evening. During the other hour guest will be treated to various meet and greets depending on the season and including couple meet ups with Mickey and Minnie dressed in 50's attire.

Main Street Transportation:
Main Street vehicle would run up and down the street most of the day, rather than morning time only. Following similar routes as their previous incarnations, the vehicles would have updated looks to keep up with the 1950s style. The old vehicles will be placed into Walt's College.

Dining

Prime Time Diner:

A quick service treat for guest located where the Crystal Palace originally stood. At it’s core the Prime Time Diner is just a quick service variant of the 50’s Prime Time Cafe, with the same charm and sense of humor. Placed around the restaurant are various televisions broadcasting reruns of the Mickey Mouse Club and Leave it to Beaver as if they were broad casting. Because this is a quick service restaurant, all dishes will be server on plates stylized to look like microwavable TV dinner trays (which became popular in the 50s).

Sci-fi Dine-in Theatre:

Closed due to the growing expansions at Disney's Hollywood Studios, the ever popular and classic Disney dinning experience will be relocated to former location of the Tomorrowland Terrance Restaurant. This relocation will feature the tradition dinning cars and old sci-fi movies playing on the big screen. A few modifications include and increased screen size and more seating for guest.

The Doo-Wop Hop:

Taking its name from the Doo-Wop songs, dances and style of the era, the Doo-Wop Hop gives a dining experience like no other. Not only will guest get the opportunity to dine with their favorite Disney character is this 50's style dinning but they will also have the chance to get up and dance with these characters on the hour, every hour. This music will be provided by a live band playing the greatest Doo-Wop hits of 1950's for 15 to 20 minutes. A nickel Jukebox will play background music during the rest of the meal time activities.

Shopping:

While much of the appearance for Main Street, USA will change the same exclusive treasure can be found within its streets, with the addition of a few. To blend with the 1950’s theme of the new Main Street USA many retro designed Disney products will be introduced including but not limited to:

Construction

Construction of the new Main Street, USA will take place over three years and will open in four unique phases and with the promise that the promise that guest will have clear visibility walking down Main Street like they do now. Much of the demolition work and moving of materials will take place during the night.

Phase 1:

Phase 1 will open six months into the three year project, and will consist of opening Second Street and Broad street. During this time the tarp facades will be put up around the current buildings on Main Street to hid the construction taking place behind them..

Phase 2:

Phase 2 will open a year and a half into the project will feature the Opening of the Prime Time Diner, Town Hall, Walt’s College, Center Street, and the rest of the stores lining Main Street, Broad Street, and Second Street.

Phase 3:

Phase 3 will open 2 years into the the project and will consist of the grand opening of Bradbury Lane into Tomorrowland, along with Gus’s Garage, Space Theatre, the Doo-Wop Hop, the Sci-Fi Drive-in Theater, and all the stores involved with this project. The new Firework view locations on top of the Prime Time Diner and Sci-fi Drive-in Theatre will open.

Phase 4:

Phase 4 will begin work after Phase 3 opens and not only take a year to finish but will take place during the Year of Magic. During this phase the hub will be closed down for major construction and changes to the Magic Kingdom infrastructure. A major addition will be the construction of The Island. To handle this change the Utilidor underneath the Hub will be curved and rerouted to handle the addition of the Island.

On the surface side of the hub new changes will also occur. The Partners statue will be moved into Walt’s college and will be replaced with a exact replica, that has Fiber optics hidden in its design and a more weather proof/time last design. The road itself with have the addition of this same Fiber Optic technology, and new sensor for parade usage. An example of these Fiber Optics and be see in a small scale at Epcot:

A Year of Magic

This year long celebration on the Magic brought to the world around by Walt Disney will begin on the New Year in celebration of the reopening of Main Street USA and the new attractions off of Bradbury . This event will not only be used to celebrate the additions added to the Magic Kingdom, but will also distract guest from the temporary closure of the Hub. But even with the closure of the Hub, A Year of Magic will a Disney Celebration like no other, with tons of new meet and greets, a brand new night time spectacular, and daytimes celebrations.

Meet and Greets

To celebrate the rich history of Disney, we are proud to announce that almost every character in Disney’s collection will be available for a meet and greet through out this celebration. Characters such as Scrooge, Von-Drake, Max, and Meeko will make an appearance along with their many friends. This is just the start of these meet and greets, in honor of holidays the Magic Kingdom Meet and Greets will represent the holiday of that month. Examples of these special occasions:

Valentines Day:

Valentines Day will bring out the lovers, in attendance Pocahontas and John Smith, Roger and Anita(with their Dalmatians), and Hercules and Megara just to name a few in attendance.

Halloween:

The villains will be out in full force during this celebration time. All of Disney’s favorite villains new and old will be present from Prince John to Maleficent will be accounted for walking around the Magic Kingdom during the day with night time celebrations of Villainy occurring in Hollywood Studios.

July:

During July to fit with the Forth of July celebrations that occur, the month will be filled with celebration of Heroes with every Disney Hero making an appearance.

Nighttime Spectacular

In honor of the new additions to the Magic Kingdom, The Wishes Firework show will be retired for a new nighttime spectacular. The show will take influence from Dreams in DisneyLand Paris but with a few changes. The show will follow Squirt (originally designed for World of Color, representing Walt Disney), as he journeys through imagination and the disney stories. During this show a low lying fog will be used to hide the construction occurring in the hub and adding to the illusion of the show.

Once the hub has be completed and re-opened the opening to the Nighttime spectacular will change to have Squirt jumping around on the castle then jumps out to the Statue of Walt Disney. The fiber optics will light up and have a magical effect starting on Walt, then spreading to the mouse. From there this sparkling magic will spread underneath people from the road out into the world around, starting a spectacular that encompasses the area around the hub.

Daytime Celebrations

Due to the closure of the hub, parades will not be able to occur until the hub is complete. To make up for this, The Magic Kingdom will have dance parties, concerts, and other day time celebrations to entertain guest.

One Little Spark...
Pre-Challenge - I'm walking right down the middle of... - Team Sklar

sklar_dl_window.jpg

This week for the pre-challenge you get to re-design Main Street USA of Walt Disney World. You and your teammate have to pick a historical period in American History and design Main Street USA to it's image. There are only a few rules:

1. It can not be the Edwardian or Victorian/Industrial revolution periods

2. It must stay within the current boundaries (water features such as a lake that go over the boundaries are accepted)

3. It must have one ride other than Main Street vehicles and the Train

Main Street USA - The Roaring 20's

Main Street USA has always represented snapshot of life during an earlier and simpler time, a time that our grandparents may remember, and we merely get a glimpse of through the lens of nostalgia.

Now that the park has aged, we feel it is time to update the look and feel of the area to a more contemporary theme that guests and their families can relate to, as well as add unique interactive features, restaurants, shops and attractions and entertainment concepts that will make a family want to stay longer in this section of the park and explore it fully.

Our proposal is to retheme the park around the Roaring 20s.

This will start with a complete retheming of the Main Street USA vehicles. Cars from the period would be added, and as a nod to the old Main Street vehicles, the double decker bus would be brought back into regular rotation with a new paintjob and chromework to make it appear as a refurbished bus from the period.

1920%252520Revere.jpg

A new host of Main Street characters would also be recruited, and would perform small impromptu street parties, streetside jazz and swing performances, comedy sketches and just generally mingling with the guests. Each section of the new Main Street (there are three, outlined below) would play host to different characters, from a friendly updated barbershop quartet in "Old Town Circle" to a seedier "gangster" and his "flapper dame" who get into hilarious antics in the "Alley Way".

Sklar-MainStreet.jpg

Map Key
Red - Old Town Circle
Yellow - Wall Street
Green - Seaside Place
Blue - Alley Way

Old Town Circle

This is the section of Main Street which was built before the boom of the 1920s. Therefore the facades will stay largely the same as they are now. New lighting fixtures to bring it into a "20s" look and feel would be added, and the architecture would be modified slightly with the addition of some art-deco influenced windows as well.

The merchandise carts would be disguised as a newsstand. And the popcorn cart would be replaced with a popcorn / hot dog vending stand called (you guessed it), Caseys.

Leaving a part of the "old main street" is intentional. The grand entrance to the park is a major part of the experience, and we wouldn't want to modify what is so familiar too much. However, it will be modified enough that it looks new. The interiors of all the buildings, as well as Cast costumes would be updated for more of a 20s look and feel.

Wall Street

This is the newer part of the city, and highly lively. While this will remain largely shops in the interior, a few items would be modified.

pioneer-arcade_chicago_may-1936.jpg

Several shops and venues would be added.

1920s-1_zpsd6340cbe.png

The movie theater would be updated with a new marquee in keeping with the book of theaters in the mid to late 20's. The inside would be done in a grand fashion, seats would be added (approx 30) and it would play cartoons and shorts from that era. The current emphasis on it being an art gallery would be eliminated, as the art gallery would be moved to Seaside Place. This is purely an attraction and a great place for families to rest their feet and soak up some free Air Conditioning on a hot day!

T-053-8.jpg

A toy shop called Ruth's Toy Emporium is a special toy store will sell toys of years past and a few Disney character toys. A small section would also be devoted to a Magic Shop with live demonstrations.

vehicles_zps73fff012.jpg

A candy shop called Jay's Sweet Tooth will be for people that have the sweetest of teeth. You will be able to buy an large assortment of candy, but instead of the boring wrappers of today, the candy will be wrapped 1920's style.
29938u.jpg

Ole' Man Willie's Motor Fuel will be a museum/shop. You will be able to walk around and look at all the tools and car items used in the 20's. You will also be able to vintage sodas and snacks, including fresh coffee and doughnuts.

antique_garage_signed_1000.jpg

Seaside Place

The 1920s were a time when the beaches and seaside towns in the northeast boomed with tourists who were now able to travel to the coast for a weekend getaway due to their newly affordable automobiles. The area where Casey's currently sits will be transformed into an interior "walkthrough" area of vendors, done in a New Jersey style. Vendors will range from fresh pretzels, fresh spun cotton candy, corn dogs, cupcakes and pies, and a small hoagie shop.

SHORPY_4a27644a1.jpg

In addition, though it would largely keep it's grand architecture and expansive windows, Crystal Palace would get a facade and interior makeover to bring it in line with the seaside resort styles of the time.

Jekyll_Island_Club_Hotel2-T1.jpg

Alley Way

This section is devoted to the darker side of the 1920s. The realm of the speakeasy, cabaret shows, and darker individuals.

Utilizing darker color tones for paint and streetwork, this area will feature two of the largest additions / modifications to Main Street.

Guests will be able to access this area through three entry points. One is Center Street East, which will now connect in after you turn the corner, which should provide a stark (and the best) entry experience for the area.

The second and third will be at the north and south ends of Alley Way. Alley Way will connect in to Old Town Circle, allowing guests two direct paths to get back to the main entrance.

Here would be a ride called "Race through America". The ride would be a slow omnimover ride with a unique soundtrack. Your challenge is to beat your opponent in a race across America. This takes you through several cartoonish scenes. Some major ones being:

1) An encounter with the Mob, where you must race through a mob shootout and into safety

2) A quiet southern farm that a storm suddenly blows up on.

3) Barnstorming in the midwest

4) Racing cars in the California desert

The design would be cartoony and fun, with tension elements being created through story/plot alone. The idea is to be tongue in cheek, but with interesting effects and music that both parents and children can enjoy, and will exit the ride humming to themselves.

tae495642LARGE.jpg

Also here will be Vino's, a concept that was proposed for Downtown Disney, but denied. So, given it's overarching theme, it will be utilized here.

Details of the concept may be found here.

I like your design for the Roaring 20's. We have never really seen Disney do that and I like it would be a fun way to enter the Magic Kingdom.

TEAM BAXTER'S PROPOSAL:
Welcome to:
14ij4lw.jpg

For this challenge we decided to create a Main Street that reflected Southern culture; therefore we went with Antebellum New Orleans.
izb0ja.png

First lets start with the Main Street train station: It would be reconstructed to resemble St. Louis cathedral and it's connected buildings. Inside would be the train station, a sweet shop, and the stroller rentals.
st-louis-cathedral-with-planter-photo_1344288-770tall.jpg

Lincoln Park

The large green rectangle on the map is for the new Lincoln park, the park will be a spot for relaxation, celebrations, gathering, meet and greets, and unique street performers. In the center a new stature would be erected of President Lincoln inspired by Walt's love for him.

The French Quarter
The four black buildings will be home to shops and resturants. The first is home to the Courtyard, based off of famous New Orleans fine dinning this restaurant would incorporate your favorite creole and cajun foods for a unique dinning experience. The second is home to The Emporium, a three story toy shop where you can find tons of Disney merch. The other two consist of stores similar to the Emporium and a biengett cafe.

The Garden District
Going into Tomorrow land guest will interact with the New Orleans Garden District. The first attraction here is a walk through of Madame Delphine La Lauries house. Madama La Laurie was a famous New Orleanian famous for throwing partys and...experimenting on slaves. This walk through would be similar to haunted house tours famous in New Orleans.
1140_Royal_Street.jpg

The second part in our Garden District tour is something we felt was fitting for young girls, Cecile and Marie~Grace an American Girl Adventure. It is a museum that gives girls an opportunity to experience these American Girl Characters world in greater detail (this is inside of the long black buildings in this area.) The girls are from 1853 New Orleans.
Cecile-and-Marie-Grace-Lifestyle-Hi-Res.jpg

Marie Laveau's Voodoo Journey
Our major attraction for this are is Marie Laveau's Voodoo Journey a thrilling adventure that takes you inside the spells and potions of the Voodoo Queen. The ride begins in a New Orleans ally where we see Laveau hand a citizen a potion bottle and tells him to drink it for his wife so she may become better. Guest then go inside the potion and begin a magical and dangerous journey only to discover that the potion has killed the man.
marielaveau.jpg

Main Street Vehicles
The Main street vehicles will be re themed to classic New Orleans carriage rides.

Port New Orleans
The large body of water will act as a stationed port with docked ships creating a New Orleans like atmosphere.

The French Market
The French Market is the building on the site of the former Italian resturant, the Market will sell fruits, veggies, and quick service lunch along with unique nick-naks.

Well we hoped you enjoyed out tour of Quater USA, ya'll come back now ya here!

One Little Spark...
I find this one interesting because I believe Sam is from the New Orleans area.
I love the ideas (not so sure about the house of horrors part though).

It's certainly a good nod to NOLA...missing a coffee/beignet shop though! (I just love beignets...yeah I'm a fatty.)

I thought the voodoo journey was interesting as well.

Overall, a neat concept!

I want to note, my team-mate has not yet seen our post. I posted it because we had content, and I wanted to be sure our ideas got out before the deadline.

So, I'm reserving the right to make changes, based on his input, to that post, again based on his input, until the deadline time...

Our concept will NOT change.

Is that ok with everyone?

That's totally fine, I understand how difficult time can be ;).

I will be drawing this challenge to a close at 12:00 CT, Team Lasseter will not be allowed to post in that time for reasons I will explain when I announce the winner, final teams, and scoreboard at 12:00.

Team Disney: Great submision, you guys really created a wonderful presentation and a FANTASMIC proposal. The land I feel is something that many grandparents can relate to and thus show grand kids how childhood was like for them. It stayed very true to the era and brought Main Street USA into the 21st century.
GRADE: A

TEAM SKLAR: Once again another great submission. The twenties is one of my favorite era's and you guys really hit it on the spot. Yet personally I would have loved to see a Gatsby area worked into the overall land; for todays generation Gatsby is the one way they can connect to the twenties so having that incorporated would have been nice, but nonetheless great work!
GRADE: A

TEAM BAXTER: This teams proposal was also very well done, it really did capture the New Orleans spirit in many ways and translated it into something beautiful. Like Englanddg said I would have like a Bienget and coffee shop, I also feel that American Girl was not necessary while they do allow for girls to learn about Antebellum Louisiana this is a Disney Park and I really wanted to see new things. The last complaint is while the park was wonderfull I feel that it does not really fit because New Orleans is the one major/second tier city that has preserved it's historical past. I can trace the owning of my home to the people who built and realize little things have changed over two hundred years, the city is a historic city you can't place it in a time period.
GRADE: B

THE WINNER IS :
TEAM DISNEY!

I would personally like to ask the judges for a two day extension. This week, I was tanked with unexpected work and was instantly put into a weekend trip away from home. Now typing from a mobile device, I would like a little bit more time to finish up ride descriptions and organize a final post. Thanks for your consideration. :)
