WDW Fans When Outside of WDW

I'm always curious about people's experiences with other WDW/Disney fans when outside of the World.

I have chrome-ish mouse ears on the back of my SUV and often find myself getting a smile and nod from fellow fans who pass me in traffic...ya know, the ones who also have Disney auto embellishments like RunDisney decals, mouse ear family decals, and antenna toppers (just to name a few).

I even struck up a conversation one time in the supermarket....I was wearing my Small World LeSportSac and she had a DCL Dooney. Although, the best was last month at DD6's field trip. I noticed another mom's Mickey earrings and Minnie manicure. It was significant because I'd later find out that her son really didn't have many friends...so I encouraged my daughter to talk to him about WDW. His family goes at least once per year...so now he has a school friend to talk to about the love of WDW. :)

Just wondering what others have experienced with other WDW fans while outside the World.

I try to convince people to go on vacation to WDW instead of other places :)
Most of my friends love Disney, but we don't talk about it much due to it makes them sad cause they cannot go....
One of my best friends LOVES Disney and she is expecting her second child. When she announced that she was having a baby, she bought four sets of Mickey ear hats to tell everyone.
I don't have a lot of themed merchandise, so I don't get stopped by people to talk Disney.

Years ago, I was smoking and sitting next to woman who started chatting with me. I noticed her purse had a Mickey on it and I said, "Mickey purse!" She smiled big and said, "I like Mickey!"

She became a very close friend. It probably would have happened without the Mickey connection, but we always credit Mickey as the beginning of our friendship!

Let's just say I am NOT surrounded by Disney lovers. So much so that I fear I've become a closet WDW fan. We had new neighbors move in next door a few years ago and I enthusiastically told them that we were heading back down for our yearly trip to WDW. I'm sure lepers and ex-cons have been looked at with less repugnance than I got from them that day and have been treated the same ever since. I would love to meet more "like-minded" people but I obviously live in the wrong circles....LOL.

One of my customers at work was a Disney bus driver so he is a lot of fun to talk to and I have some co-workers that have been going recently so its fun to chat about new experiences at the world. Other than that I haven't met many people that have ever been before. The big vacation destinations for people around me are the beach and hunting in the mountains.

I've meet many whom respect Disney and have been there, but never meet a full on fan. I have gotten people more interested in Disney though and we do have chats. I'm kinda the Disney Guru in my hometown. I do have an aunt though that's a writer and she wrote many children's books for Disney! She lives in Santa Barbara near DL. So when we see each other we always discuss Disney sometimes!

I wear a disney shirt pretty much every day of the year, I have enough to wear a different one every day for atleast a month (pathetic I know) and I always have a mickey antenna topper on my car that matches the time of year it is. Also I have a few visible Disney tattoos and I generally have my nails painted some type of Disney theme, so I get a lot of patients at work that talk to me about Disney, its usually my go to when I'm talking to a patient during a surgery/procedure as it seems to calm people down and they can focus more on my blabbing on and on about Disney rather then the fact that they are getting skin cancer removed.

I work at a specialty toy store so I definitely run into some Disney lovers. Although I have found that just because you have a Mickey purse, that does not mean you want to have conversation : / I was just being friendly! But this woman wanted nothing to do with me!
Apparently she needs more Mickey!

I have some Disneyland/Mickey tshirts and a WDW sweatshirt I wore at college. After the "corporate shill!" shouts from the companies are evil crowd, a lot of people thought it was cool. I'm interested to see what happens if I do the Campus Rep program

That is so sweet with the 4 sets of ears. :) The merch definitely makes a difference...as one of my friends put it, you have to be pretty fond of Disney to put it on your car. I get the sadness part too...I have a friend who really enjoys WDW and wants to treat her daughter for HS grad next year, but it's not looking like it will be in the budget :( which makes it tough to talk Disney.

That's awesome!!! A friendship made b/c of the Mouse :D

That's kind of how it is at home. DH is not the fan that I am, so I can't really get into it at home. Of course, most people think it's nuts - still, I am lucky that my two new supervisors are also big WDW fans. It's nice to have some of the love of WDW at work...especially when they roll up to your desk and want to talk ADRs vs. work. ;)

Well, that's very cool ... I'm sure he's got some great stories. Most of the people here do other things during vacay as well and reserve WDW for that "one big trip" so usually not many fans to talk to either...at least in my circles.

I've meet many whom respect Disney and have been there, but never meet a full on fan. I have gotten people more interested in Disney though and we do have chats. Yeah- most of the people I meet are like that....and then somehow I wind up in a little group of people looking for trip planning advice. That was the crazy part about meeting the woman at the field trip...we were both able to field questions from the rest of the moms and dads who wanted to take their kids, but were scared b/c of how huge it is...from the planning perspective. That's awesome about your aunt! I'm sure she'd be a great person to talk Disney. What kinds of things has she written for them?

I personally think it's awesome that you have all of those shirts. I've thought about getting the antenna topper set, but it's probably good that I didn't since this vehile doens't have a traditional antenna. I'm sure all of that does help your patients as well. The girl that sits next to me at work is going through some of that right now, and I know she's very stressed. In fact, I just made a cake for a charity event that's put on by a girl who lost her dad to issues surrounding a melanoma...horrible about her father, but we raised a lot of $ for the American Cancer Society.

Well, that sounds like a lot of fun! As for the lady with the bag...I think that's why I've been apprehensive about getting too chatty, but so far I've been lucky. Definitely sounds like that lady could use an extended stay in the magic bubble!!!

I think a lot of people just don't get it. I read an interesting article the other day on Disney World w/o kids and it follows a Disney skeptic who winds up touring with a friend who is a Disney enthusiast. Part of me just wanted to jump into the article and beg this woman to loosen up, embrace it all, etc.

Not sure what's all involved in the Campus Rep program (since I only had friends who did the college program), but I'm sure it would be interesting...at the very least.

I look a lot like an NFL lineman, so it is fair to say people wouldn't predict I am a huge Disney fan. However, I have a friend or a family member or two that are big fans as well, so I get my fix with them. There are a few people at work who just don't get the whole concept of Disney though for the life of them.

I have the Disney Debit card through my bank, well when I pay for things I get reactions from "OH My GOSH that is sooo cute" to "Disney is evil" Mostly many in between. There is one teller at my bank that we talk for a long time about Disney, she even has her area decked out with Disney stuff. So it's usually..."Did you hear about..." or "I have PICTURES from our last trip"

I'm a FL resident. So that means that everyone around is a Disney "fan." The problem is that people think because they live close to Disney they are Disney experts. Trust me, close proximity does not equal expertise. But at least most people around here are willing to chat about Disney.

Note: No offense to my fellow FL residents here. I'm sure that if you are a reader of this forum you are not one of the afore mentioned "fans."

Get noticed ALL the time. Once I was sitting at a red light waiting for it to turn. A woman on my left started beeping her horn frantically. When I looked over she started pointing, pointing and pointing. I thought I was getting a flat or something. But what it was, was she saw my Mickey Mouse steering wheel cover. She had a Tinkerbell steering wheel cover. :D
But anytime I am out in public and get a hint that somebody likes Disney I strike up a conversation and see where it leads us.

I know how that goes...I have a friend at work who is in her 40s, 2 elementary age kids, and since she's never been to WDW...she doesn't get the big deal about taking her kids. It's sad b/c I think some of it is $, but they refuse to do the research - yet spend $ in so many wasteful ways. Oh well...I'm sure we all know people like this...and I'm sure she's telling her hubby that I'll be throwing away my $ "again" on another trip to WDW. Oh well.

You just reminded me of a Disney moment I had at the beginning of this month. I had a reunion with a bunch of my college friends. The girl checking out next to me is also a big WDW fan and the guy ringing us up had to do a double take when we both presented Disney Visas. That's great with the teller--I'd deck my desk out like that if I didn't think the cleaning crew would make off with some of my stuff (happened before).

It probably would have happened without the Mickey connection, but we always credit Mickey as the beginning of our friendship!

I like to look at things like that and just say...he helped :) And welcome to WDW Magic!

You are sooooo right! I lived in FL for a number of years and most of my close family still lives there. I found that many just assume they can wing it since it's not like they're going as far out of their way to get there. At least you have people willing to talk Disney...with the exception of a few key friends, most of the people were anti-Disney. :(

Love the steering wheel covers!!!

I think that's part of why I have initiated conversations with those who look like they are Disney fans...you never know where it's going to go. Plus, it kind of reminds me of the conversations I tend to engage in with other guests when we're actually at WDW. I swear, that right there is one of the little bonus points of a trip to Disney...getting to converse with some great people. :)

I have become the official go to person for planning WDW trips at work, I always laugh when someone from another department comes to my desk that I have no daily contact with and they are like " so I want to take my family, where should we stay". I also get a lot of comments and conversations at the grocery store parking lot about my AP Decal on my car.

I think it's safe to say I'm the biggest Disney fan in my city (about 10,000 or more people). I haven't met anyone who loves it at much as me, so I don't talk Disney outside of my family much. That's why I'm here! :D

My Disney tee shirts have led to many fun conversations with total strangers who are either big Disney fans themselves or are anticipating their first ever trip. And lately my 15th anniversary AK safari hat has resulted in me being asked lots of questions about WDW. I am not a big pin collector but I have a few and they also have opened up conversations. Over the years I've helped many a first timer plan their WDW vacation and I always look forward to the stories and photos when they return. There also are those who think that I'm nuts for being such a Disney nut. To each his own is what I say.

I admire the time you spent to respond to posts! Thank you! My Aunt does gold-bind books for Disney, which are just cute simple childerens book. She has also written a book called, Boy of Heart Mountian. A small Career but she also did a few other small things with Disney here and there. But yea, thanks for asking. :)
