WDW Fanatic Tries DL

Got back today from my first trip to DL (well...first one I can remember anyway - last one I was 5 I think...). My thoughts for those that are interested in giving DL a whirl.

(1) If you think of WDW as your "home away from home," be prepared to not feel that way at DL. DL is great, and, as you'll read, there are many, many really cool things about it. But, oddly at times it reminded me of the weird nightmares I have where I'm in the Magic Kingdom trying to find my family, but can't find them because it's different and things aren't where they should be. Despite all of its "pros," I found myself wishing at I was WDW.

(2) You'll find yourself wishing they could hit "copy + paste" for many things to put them in WDW. For starters, Frontierland is just way better. Seeing the show at the Golden Horseshoe again was soooo fun. I wish, wish, wish they'd bring that back. Frontierland felt alive in DL, and feels dead in WDW. POTC is so cool in DL, and Splash Mountain tells the story a whole lot better than the version at WDW.

(3) Character Experiences are better in DL - hands down. At Minnie's breakfast, we met 9 different characters! (Minnie, Chip, Dale, Captain Hook, Fairy Godmother, Pooh, Tigger, Eeyore, and Rafiki. Otherwise, the characters just wander around and stop whenever and wherever they want to! It's so different and so awesome!

(4) California Adventure is a really solid park. Not sure why DHS is so far behind given they are essentially going for the same things?!?! But, California Adventure blows DHS out of the water. Again, wish I could copy + paste

(5) You will miss EPCOT. That's it - you will miss it, a lot.

(6) You will not miss excess walking, buses, etc. I cannot express how awesome it is to just walk into the park from your hotel. Absolutely no wasted time!

(7) You will miss certain aspects of MyMagic+ It is nice to have your wrist band, and you'll miss it when it's gone. But, I liked having the old Fastpass system again. It was nice to let your day play out instead of calculating every little thing.

(8) You will struggle to find quick service places to eat! I think because they don't have the dining plan, they don't have the demand for restaurants. So, it is not easy finding a good place to sit down and grab a quick bite! We ended up going back to the hotel most days - which was fine since it was only a 5 minute walk.

(9) Will I go back? Maybe... On the way home there was a flight leaving for Orlando, and I wish I was on it. I think that says something... I just wish WDW could take a hint from DL on many things and get its act together.

Anyway - just some thoughts. If you have questions, I'd love to answer them!

Great synopsis, and I agree almost 100% with everything you said.

On #5, I would have missed Epcot 10-15 years ago, but not so much right now. Epcot is like DHS to me...a shell of a park. Both the DL park and DCA beat it, hands down, for me.

#6...soooooo true. It was fantastic being steps from the parks, especially when we stayed at GC.

#8...also so true. If anyone thinks it's hard to find a QS seat in Florida's MK, just try DL at lunch time. It is nice that they don't have the DDP, but you're right that they seem to have fewer seats at peak times.

#9...we had a sampling of DLR in March 2013, and enjoyed it so much we booked a proper trip for December that same year. After the December trip, I was wishing we had a few days at WDW to tack on the end. I certainly didn't dislike the trip, but after being spoiled rotten by WDW for 30 years, it's hard to go through DLR and then be like, "So, that's it I guess."

I loved the layout and feel of Disneyland. So much more intimate and charming.

Both resorts are really special, but yeah, DL takes the cake.

And yes, I did miss EPCOT. :)

Those are the two most perfect words to describe DL....intimate and charming. I used both those words when talking to numerous CMs out there. Many of whom approached us because I was wearing a WDW sweatshirt.

Disneyland is certainly that.

I had a few "meh" moments...

1) Our "grand entrance to the MK" is much better, especially if you are taking a kid for the first time and do it through the Ferry (which, is the ONLY way to do a kiddo first trip...imho...take the bus to EPCOT, ride the monorail to TTC, and take the Ferry to MK...it takes a long time, but the building and final result is well worth it!)

2) Staying with that, our train station is much better, as is our scale.

3) My response to seeing the Castle? It's so...small...

That's all for now, but I think the OP had it 100% correct and spot on with my observations as well. So glad she had a great trip, Disneyland is a magical place (and, I'd argue...were it not so expensive to visit from the East Coast, I'd go there before WDW)

Tom Bergeron's last night hosting AFV was aired tonight, filmed at DL and DCA (the Cars land looks really cool). It makes me want to go there one of these years.. and makes me kick myself for not getting there when I lived in Sacramento for a few years several years ago.. but I hadn't drunk the WDW kool-aid yet when I lived on the left coast..

I also did my first trip to Disneyland this month.

Now that surprises me, because I found the quick service food situation at both Disneyland parks to be noticeably better than that in Florida, not counting Epcot.
We tried Rancho del Zocalo, Lucky Fortune, Royal Street Veranda, Award Wieners, Cozy Cone... all of it was great, and I was kind of disappointed we didn't get a chance to try Bengal BBQ or the Paradise Garden Grill.
That said, we've never used a Disney dining plan, at any park; the math just never adds up for us.

Oddly for me what I want most from DL's Frontierland is their pavement! The stones embedded in the ground makes it feel really authentic, as compared to WDW's slab-o-concrete.

The food options are pretty different... I think there is plenty... But you cant go seeking the same avenues you are used to in the mk. Alot of the main stays just arent in the mk so to the unfamilar it can be harder to find things and know what to trust.

Not to rub salt in the wound, but Cars land is really cool! Unbelievable really with how immersive it is. And, Radiator Springs Racers is absolutely one of the best rides I have ever been on!!

I should have been clearer about this-- it was mostly at DCA that we struggled to find places. I think the rain situation also contributed because a lot of their food is served at a window with outdoor seating, and since it rained 2/3 days we were there a lot of those seating areas weren't open (not that we would have wanted to sit in the cold rain anyway...). But I think that is part of it.

I didn't notice the stones?!?! But I did notice the cowboy boot imprints and horse shoes, and how they'd designed it to look like mud. I really thought it was cool!

I agree- I thought the train station, Main Street and the castle were all under-whelming. The buildings on Main Street seemed smaller?? Was that my imagination or are they actually smaller??

And I missed the opening ceremony that MK does-- always makes my cry cause it means I'm really there!!

Two things I forgot--

It was chilly in CA-- when you're used to heat and humidity, it can be shocking. I would've preferred a little more heat. It rained 2/3 days we were there. Not normally bothered by rain, but it really did get too cold to be enjoyable and we ended up heading in to wait it out (which we have never done at WDW).

I thought the merchandise selection was better at DL-- much more specific to the section of the park and/or ride you went on. For example, I picked up a really nice Soarin' coffee cup. I told my DD to just wait to buy something because we'd see it again in another gift shop, but that was not true. Some things overlapped, but the majority of things I would say were unique to that particular gift shop.
