WDW Airport

I doubt it would happen.. an airport on WDW property would use up too much land, and would destroy the whole atmosphere with its ugly look and noisy planes flying in all the time. One thing WDW definately doesn't want is planes flying over their property - WDW is restricted airspace unless you are authorized. Besides, why build when Orlando Airport is just 20 miles away?

I DO see the rumor of an express monorail running all the way from Orlando Intl. Airport to WDW happening.

I'm pretty sure Walt planned on an airport in WDW, he wanted everything. So, I think it was something planned.

I think it would be also dangerous, since there are some high buildings in WDW, plus all the terrorism hysteria , Disney wouldn't want MORE security problems.

I think that if either of these two things happens, then it won't be in the next 10 years. Disney has lost A LOT of money in recent years, and probably wouldn't want to shell out money for a monorail or airport. The monorail would not be worth it, especially when a lot of people rent cars down in Florida, and that would mean rent a car places all over the place, or just one HUGE National Rental Car center. Either way it's pointless.

Orlando International...

Actually, the rumor was part of a larger plan to increase the monorail's reach to the parks and resorts. In the plan, there would be a light rail system (i.e. not monorail, but more like a traditional train) that would run to Orlando International.

Besides , I think Orlando's Airport is really great and near to the park to construct something closer and new.
Who doesn't like that feeling when you pass down the WDW property arch with your car and start seeing the purple signs with mouse simbols... I do.

I'm a monorail junky...so here's what I've heard over the past year or so...

There have been rumours for many years now of connecting ALL the parks, resorts, and even the airport via the WDW monorail system. BUT Disney has heald off on any expansion to the monorail system because they have plans for a new system that I've heard as being refered to as a "sideways elevator". It would supposedly connect all the resorts, parks and possibly run to the airport. It would replace both the bus and monorail systems in turn being very eficient.

Now that's what I've been hearing and that's the story I stick with. I don't see any of this happening any time soon. WDW would more likely add more parks or hotels before this ever becomes a reality.

I'll post some links for you guys with info and rumours on WDW monorails in just a minute. :)

I found this at www.wdimagic.com

"In a speech by Walt Disney World Resort President Al Weiss given to new Walt Disney World Cast Members in 1999, Weiss is quoted as saying, "...in two years, we are committed to drastically reducing the number of buses required to fulfill our internal transportation needs." He also talked about a "...transport system which will whisk guests from the airport to a new hub on property in five minutes." There have been rumors floating around for quite some time about expansions of the Monorail system. The rumors have suggested that the Monorail would be extended to Disney-MGM Studios, Disney's Animal Kingdom, Downtown Disney, and several of the resort hotels in between. With the expansion, a new Ticket and Transportation Center would be built near Epcot that would be in a more central location. It has also been said that Disney will then connect other resorts and areas on the WDW property without Monorail service to the nearest Monorail stations via a Light Rail system. The announcement of transportation improvements taking place within the next two years at Walt Disney World seems to make these rumors all the more likely."

Why make it easier for people to get there, if they want DW they go to DW any way possible, if they want the studios, they go to studios and suffer.
People plan trips to go somewhere, they don't make up their mind at the airport.

There is/was a big debate over a light rail system for Orlando.

At one point it was going to go from Daytona to Tampa Bay. Connections to TB in order to try and get 2012 Summer Olympics.

Traffic is terrible in Orlando. I-4 and International Drive are especially terrible.

In the mid-eighties Disney suggested that they might be interested in building a monorail link between WDW and MCO. There was a huge outcry from the businesses in Orlando. Hotels and taxi services would directly lose business and other attractions would be hurt too. Since the local governments tend to side against Disney when other businesses stand to be hurt it was pretty clear the idea could never come to pass.

Disney also couldn't build their own airport even if they wanted to. It would be a major airway disruption to build another commercial airport so close to an international airport. They'd only be allowed to fly in small aircraft, which would serve no purpose at all.

Disney will benefit by getting ride of their buses and less traffic on their roads. People at Disney would benefit by not having to drive or taking the buses. 1-4 will benefit by having less traffic. I don't see what the problem with businesses opposing it. Monorail's are going to be the transporation of the future along with electric cars.

what if disney just ran there own busses to and from the airport. free of charge for resort guests. they could throw that in there video for a resort guest perk. also maybe just expand the monorail to the deluxe resorts. you pay more you get more. if the monorail went to all resorts why would a stay at a deluxe when i could stay at a all star with a monorail. Another problem with expanding the monorail is that is could get very confusing.

I could see it now. from AKL to MK. take monorail to epcot, then transfer to monorail to ticket center then transfer to MK monorail. a direct bus is just easier.
