A tripod is a neccesary evil sometimes, unlike the strollers carrying 12 year olds or 200lbs of junk.
necessary evil???

I haven't seen many strollers with 12 year olds, but I'm willing to bet there are fewer strollers with 12 year olds than idiots that can't use a tripod correctly or don't have enough respect for others to be careful.

Or the leashes weird parents keep on their kids that end up tripping people? I for one am not sure Id ever go back if they told me I couldnt go in with my tripod.
again, interesting take. Don't take away your tripod, but who cares if those kids get separated from their parents. You know, those 18 month old kids like to walk around, but they just haven't mastered the idea that there are dangers around them.

Hey, I want to keep using a tripod, but I'm not going to get bent out of shape over the loss. But, as someone else mentioned, we are talking about Disneyland, hence California, and they do have a way of catering to the lowest common denominator out there!

I think tripods could be a problem. Not every photographer is courteous, and I have seen on one occasion a photographer screaming at some little kids (not his) that bumped his tripod.

I think the real scourge in the parks are ECV's. While I think everybody should have the opportunity to experience the parks, I have seen many able-bodied people in these. In one instance, I was almost run over by two kids racing their ECV's in front of The Living Seas.....I thought they must be in their parents ECV's, but then I was almost run over by the parents doing the same thing. (Needless to say, I was ed, and vocal)

OMG! I HATE all this talk about BANNING because there are a few idiots out there that caused a couple of people to get hurt. I've been run over by strollers, people in wheel chairs and on ECV's, hit by diaper bags, purses, elbows (....you get the picture) but I don't think they should be banned.....I can see it now... NO ONE allowed to raise their arms in the parks because someone got hit in the head. If the world or even just WDW banned everything that hurt everyone, there would be nothing and NO ONE in the parks. How about educating the ignorant!!!!! THAT would solve more problems than banning something!!!! If they must ban something.......BAN THE IDIOTS!!!!
[/rant].....steps off soapbox
Sorry for the rant....blame it on PMS or something. :p :goodnevil

This policy is not new, but as evidenced by the fact that CRO-Magnum took a tripod through security, it is inconsistently applied.

Last Nov., we were re-entering DL, and my tripod was attatched to my camera bag. I'd already had it in the park during this trip, but the guy at bag check asked if I was aware of the tripod policy? Well, I knew that I'd brought it in several times over the years, (including at the Fantasmic balcony buffet, where I asked the CM if it was OK (it was)), but I knew of no policy.

He told me tripods were not allowed. However, he then told me that if it's set up out of the way, and not interfering with anyone, it was probably OK. He specifically used the phrase "We'll work with you if you work with us." He added that keeping the legs together as if it was a monopod was not a problem.

Since 18 out of 20 CMs didn't know about this "policy", I would personally go ahead and bring it. Then if someone did say something, I'd fold it up until I was out of their area before using it again. The fact that security at the gates lets them through with no problem, and that CRO-Magnum had used his for so long before anyone said anything to him, would seem to indicate that the worst thing that might happen is that you might have to get a locker or take it to your car. Don't draw attention to yourself, and you probably won't be bothered, as was the case for me in Nov.

That would get rid of at least 80% of the people that visit WDW.

hmmm... that seems like a gross underestimate to me

OK if we are going to be banning things my vote definately goes to the dreaded tank top on the bus ride home...I definately prefer to stand than to have someones smelly armpit right at face level! no thanks!

Seriously though, I think there are fewer people with tripods than people using umbrellas (personally I don't think they should even sell those in the parks), strollers and the such. Also, I haven't used those leashes, but would prefer to use the leash than lose my child. the strollers, yes you will have the pushy people, and you will have the idiots who suddenly stop in the middle of the walkway for no apparent reason and then get really mad when they get bumped! go figure. My biggest complaint though comes from the kids who think the bars in the line are for practicing their gymnastics and their parents think they need to be touching your butt for the lines to move faster! personal space...its something we should all get familiar with ;) lol

Promises, promises.  :lookaroun

J/K Rob, but watch it with the stroller comments... remember who did you that itsy, bitsy, teen weeny, almost insignificant favor the other day? Well, she's a stroller advocate. ;)
