Today instead of doing any actual work-type things I spent a large part of my shift demoing the Buzz Lightyear Transmobot (WOW!) by driving it around the store and into the mall and stuff. Kids love the thing because it can spin in place, transform, shoot missles, and is an all-around cool toy.
There was one boy who was in a wheelchair and didn't have the ability to move most of his body. The woman he was with explained to me that he was hit by a truck 15 months ago and is going through intense physical therapy to regain even the most basic motor skills. The boy was especially captivated by the toy so the woman asked me to show her how it works. I gave her a brief overview of the controller and handed it off to her.
She wrapped both his hands around it and placed his thumbs on the control sticks. It took a bit of effort at first but after a while he was able to control it pretty well. She explained that right now his thumbs are the "most hopeful" part of his body for complete recovery and this was the most physical activity he'd done in a while. She purchased a Transmobot so it can become part of his physical therapy and help him recover!
It's days like this that make it all worthwhile.
