Want a new Camera

Our camera is getting pretty stale - it was bought in 2005 - it is a Canon S500 I believe. Anyway - I'm ready for a new one but don't want to make a HUGE investment. I'm in love with the Nikon D40 - but I know that is a manual camera and I don't know anything about photography. So I'm going to settle (for now) on another point and shoot. Any suggestions?

I'm in love with the Nikon D40 - but I know that is a manual camera and I don't know anything about photography.

The D40 has the following Exposure Modes - Programme, bulb, automatic, manual, aperture-priority, shutter-priority, i-TTL program flash.

This means you can get the camera of your choice and use the automatic (point and shoot) setting until you learn more about photography. Buying a new point and shoot seems to be throwing money away

I agree with CAPTAIN HOOK...I'd go ahead and get the dslr. I bought the D60 last November, and honestly I have kept it on auto because I just have not had time to read the manual yet. I WANT to learn how to use it...I really do...but I just have not had an opportunity to yet. The pictures I've taken with it on auto have turned out wonderful. I've taken it on two Disney trips so far, and I use it in everyday life almost daily, and I have yet to have a time where I was not happy with it on the auto setting.
