I don't know if you can record it, but I hear it all the time on live365.com internet radio. There are about 7 Disney stations that play all that stuff all night long. Love it!

Diesel.

I have a further question... are the engines powered by steam which is fired by diesel, or are they powered by a diesel engine? I thought I read that they were refurbished (after they were found in South America) and refitted with diesel engines, which I then assumed provided the actual motion/power.

The engines are powered by steam... which is created with the diesel engine.

If they are steam engines, with a boiler-fired by deisel, when and where do the engines refill their water tanks along the route? Any time I have ridden the trains, I've never heard mention of any of them having to stop to take on more water, which each train would have to do a number of times throughout the day. And... I've never seen the great billows of steam coming from the stack, that is associated with steam engines.

There's a water tower at the Mickeys Toontown Fair stop. I don't know if that's operational or not. If not I'm assuming the trains switch periodically and fill up back stage.

Im pretty sure its operational. I was standing next to toontown station and sll of a sudden clouds of steam come billowing out from all around the train engine.

Now that you mention it, I do remember the water tower in toon town. And I guess it would be more cost effective to have a deisel fired boiler instead of burning deisel through (what would have to be) an allison-type truck deisel engine. Thanks for the info everybody!

The boilers are fired by oil, not diesel fuel. The oil is vaporized and ignited. The oil used is much more stable than diesel oil and does not actually combust unless it is in a vapor form. Diesel oil is more like gasoline in that it will burn and ignite while still in liquid form.

The water tower by Toontown station is indeed real, and does fill the boilers of the locomotives 3 or 4 times a day. The engines used to be coal burning, and were transitioned to oil in the mid-90's.

How do I know all this? Besides reading tons of books on railroads, I worked at GM/EMD on diesel locomotives, and also took the behind the scene's tour of the WDW RR.

We had Bob as our guide. It was pretty kewl. My dream job is to be an engineer on the railroad at Disneyworld. Anyone know how I can get that job???

So what happened to the water tower that was at the fronteirland station.?

I know it existed in the 70s. I also remember the station was moved for the construction splash Mountain, so did they not replace it when they rebuilt the station??

If I remember correctly, the water tower at the Frontierland station was never a real tower. It was just for scenery. The tower at the Toontown station, then the Tomorrowland station, always was the one that would water the locomotives.

Does anyone have a pic of the old Fronteriland station??? I can never picture it in my head...
