Walt Disney World Marathon Weekend

So, my worst nightmare finally happened. This weekend was supposed to be the weekend of my 20 mile long run and what happens? I come down with the flu. The doctor has grounded me from doing anything that could make this worse. The only thing I'm worried about is that when I start up my training again and I re-lapse. Has anyone been in this situation before? Any advise? It's getting too close to WDW marathon weekend. :(

Listen to your doctor. Although mine takes the opposite approach and tells me to run through most sickness, yours knows you better. You can usually skip a week of training and resume without too much issue. Missing multiple weeks starts to be a bit of worry and causes slippage in the schedule, so getting better takes priority over training.

Not the end of the world, don't despair. When I was training for my first marathon I injured my knee and was worried it would set me back a lot. I forced myself to miss some runs so that it could heal, and it ended up being fine. My (completely unprofessional) advice would be to skip a few runs so that you can get healthy faster. Then get back out there when you feel strong. If anything, you could go on walks to keep your legs moving and get some fresh air. You still have time to get that long run in. Even if you don't get all of your runs in before the race, you've done the work you need to finish. You can do this!

Just want to cross that finish line in one piece.....and then raid Germany for a very tall and a very cold beer! :D

It stinks but your more fit than you realize if you're up to 20 miles. Take up to a week to recuperate and hopefully you'll be able to pick it up from there.

I was supposed to do a 20 miler, but I fell sick. So....I'll try it again next week and see what happens. :)

Seeking advice:
I've been following the Jeff Galloway Dopey plan as best as I could this year. I modified it a bit because I ran Wine and Dine, and it got in the way. I juggled the long runs, and my last long runs are supposed to be this weekend (12 miles on Saturday, 23 on Sunday). However, it's supposed to be rainy both Saturday and Sunday. I'm considering pushing it back one more week, but that would leave only 2 weeks to recover before Dopey. I could possibly run them Monday and Tuesday, but I'll have family in town.

So what say you fine people? Is two weeks out from the race to late to do a long run?

Edit: I should also mention, I have no real time goal for any of the dopey races. I just want to finish.

Better now than a week from now so you have time to taper and let your body get strong. Maybe do one in the rain and one when company is around?

Your plan's taper is more important than mileage. The Higdon plan has two weeks of taper not including race week.

Thanks, guys! I'd like to get a 23 mile run in, but I did get a 20 miler done, so it wouldn't be the end of the world if I didn't. It's now looking like rain on Monday too, so I'll just play it by ear. I might skip the 12 and just try and get the 23 in if I can. The family coming to town is my sister. She's running Dopey too, so she'll understand.

Just found out from a friend of mine that Disney has posted the race registration waivers http://trackshackresults.com/disneysports/waivers/wavr17wdw/verify.php. Click this link, enter your LAST NAME and Date Of Birth. Then, to save time, print them out and bring them with you. Your bib number is on the waiver.

Then, once you find your bib number on the waiver, go to this website: https://www.rundisney.com/disneyworld-marathon/. Scroll down to "Corral and Bib Assignment" and click on the event you signed up for. The number on your bib will determine corral placement. I just found out I'm in corral O for the Marathon. Hey...not the dead last corral....but it's something. So....the party will be in corral O. Who's bringing the chips and dip? LOL!

Good luck everyone! I'm sure I'll see EVERYBODY in January! LOL!!

Looks like it's the same courses as last year. So glad they didn't get rid of the Studios completely! It'll be fun to run down sunset blvd. I didn't get to do that in 2015.

I'll be partying it up in corral G! Don't be surprised if you catch me, though @ntn_haqqer! I definitely won't be finishing with my corral.

I did get my 12 mile run/walk in this morning. It was misting and cold (36 deg F), but I did it. Hopefully I can get my 23 miler in sometime in the next few days.

Close, but not quite the same. Quick check points out a few differences. MK looks fairly constant, may have tweaked it over by Splash to remove that dog leg (or may just be liberties in the drawing). They added a swerve about mile 10 (not sure how, more liberties?) lengthened the dog leg at mile 11, have us run through the new FotLK area, tweaked the course in the DinoRama area, added a dog leg leaving AK park area, and a bit more in the AK parking lot area. Used to leave AK parking lot at mile 14, now its just about mile 15. WWoS looks the same, but mile 20 used to be after we left, now its in the field areas. And they did change the DHS area, looks like we enter through the F! exit/overflow fate by ToT (right next to smoking area/Joffrey's cart) and cut out the stuff in the obviously closed "backstage" area. Epcot looks the same, but the mile markers for 25/26 are in different locations so the finish may be pushed back a hair (or again, liberties).

So overall, looks like the biggest changes are in the AK area.

Wow, you've got the details, @dreamfinder, thanks! I didn't run it last year, I was just superficially comparing maps. You're on top of it!

I got my 23 miler in yesterday. I hemmed and hawed over the weather, but decided to go for it, and just get wet if it came to it. The weather changed every 30 minutes. Humid, cloudy, sunny, cloudy, showers, breezy, cloudy, etc. It was crazy. But I got my distance in! I feel much better about the marathon now.

They finally closed registration, last time I saw still had 1/2, full, Goofy and Dopey slots available. Be interesting to see how they spin that.

Still can't find an official course certification to see which of the changes are liberties in the drawing, or actual changes.
