Walt Disney Imagineering reshuffles creative leadership at Walt Disney World

Could be good news. But doesn't really matter unless Disney starts greenlighting projects. Even with all the rumors and buzz, I can't help but be skeptical we will see anything worth getting excited about anytime soon. I am hoping I am dead wrong. In the meantime, plenty to be psyched about that's under construction up the interstate. Oh what a difference a few years can make...

Kathy's a good choice to lead the DHS Portfolio, Epcot, Not so much (JIIwF, Nemofication of the Living Seas) Each Park should have it's own creative team that understands each Park and it's intent and needs. As for Eric's new role, It seems to be a response to the recent DOSH closures at Disneyland. My bet would be he will be in charge of making sure the new safety railings that are being installed at Disneyland are themed appropriately for their surroundings.

So if Kathy was just put into creative control of DHS and Epcot today, it would seem we are still a ways off from any announcements about a Cars Land / Star Wars Land. Due to the fact that basically she has to step in and see all the plans that Eric was working on, make her own suggestions and changes, redo artwork, models, etc.

I have a feeling she has been involved with all these plans to begin with. She has been in Florida for awhile working on special projects. This seems to me part of a great plan. Things are looking up for Epcot and HS.

Ahem ... after that. Its nice now that there is 3 different creatives overseeing 4 parks as opposed to the 2 previously. But saying that is until WDI starts charging correctly and better management in front of TDO and TWDC overall it is mute.

Eric J should not be still the creative lead on DHS and Epcot.

Anyone ever see Ms. Mangum in the parks? Ive got pics with all the characters and now I want to start getting pictures with executives I see in the parks. Mangum would be a great one to start off with. Will they even pose for a picture? Anyone ever tried or got a pic with an executive?

I got a pic with Lasseter at DCA two years ago when he was walking around with Kathy.

No. You can only see them at an Executive Breakfast. I believe Crystal Palace just ended its Pooh character breakfast in favor of an Executive Breakfast.

Wouldn't it be cool if you did the Dine with an Imagineer program and instead of getting some nobody who worked on the Rapunzel urinals you got someone like Kathy or Eric or Theron? I'd be afraid to dine with Rohde...dreading the inevitable ear piercing course of the meal.

They will pose. My avatar is me with Tony Baxter and Bob Gurr. I've also got a photo with Tom Fitzgerald who was working on the updated Star Tours at the time. And I have seen Kathy in Epcot somewhat recently.

I asked Phil Holmes to pose for a picture in front of his portrait in New Fantasyland. It didn't take much convincing.

For what it's worth, a few days ago Lee Macdonald (well known Disney insider) said that Kathy Magnum has been very good at playing the politics game at WDI so this doesn't surprise me at all.

Sounds like it is "state the obvious" day... We all knew this was coming. Seems funny, just before Immagination goes down for a year (Epcot) and expansion at HS...

Things that make you go "hmmmm"

Kathy is good for getting the most bang for her buck. She redid the seas on a horrible budget. So if the DHS budget is 600 million she should do some neat stuff with it.

Is she going to make the park rides better? Is TDO going to get a kick in the shorts from her? Is this a good or bad thing?

She doesn't have the power to do that. No Imagineer does. Kathy Mangum, like all Imagineers, is basically a hired designer for local park management, in this case TDO.

Think of her like a top-notch designer hired to remodel and expand your house; she is the project manager and has the creative vision, while she manages the construction contractors and various tradesmen involved. And the result is based on how much money you give her.

If TDO wants her to design a new Star Wars Land for DHS with three new E Tickets, she will do that if they give her the direction and money to do that. Or if all TDO wants her to do is design new bathrooms and drinking fountains, she will do that if that's all the money and direction they give her. Her current assignment to WDW however likely spells a project of reasonable significance.

Her latest project was Cars Land at DCA. But she's done lots of other stuff, like Pirates Lair on Tom Sawyer Island for Disneyland.

But an Imagineer has no ability to muscle TDO around or tell local WDW management what to do. Imagineers are hired designers, and TDO is their client who holds the purse strings.
