Walt Disney Imagineer, author and historian David Mumford died on Jan. 20 in Burbank, Calif., following a battle with non-Hodgkin's lymphoma and paraneoplastic pemphigus.
As a senior principal show set designer at WDI, David oversaw the production of working set drawings for Disney theme park attractions. His most recent project was the Journey Into Imagination with Figment attraction at Epcot.
David's legacy also includes a series of Disney books.
According to WDI Project Director Bruce Gordon, David diligently read all of the proofs for his upcoming book Ellenshaw Under Glass from his hospital bed. The book, which tells the story of matte artist and Disney Legend Peter Ellenshaw, is scheduled to debut in March.
David and Bruce co-authored and edited a variety of Disney books, including, Disneyland: The Nickel Tour, A Brush With Disney: An Artist's Journey, Walt's Time: From Before to Beyond (with Jeff Kurtti) and Walt Disney Imagineering: A Behind the Dreams Look at Making the Magic Real (with Kevin Rafferty and Randy Webster).
David joined The Walt Disney Company in 1974 as an Attractions host at Submarine Voyage at Disneyland Park. In 1979, David joined WED Enterprises (the former name for WDI) to work as a show set draftsman for The Land at Epcot.
Among David's other WDI credits are Alice in Wonderland and Aladdin's Oasis at Disneyland Park, The Living Seas at Epcot, Star Tours and the Cinderella Castle Mystery Tour at Tokyo Disneyland Park, and Mermaid Lagoon at Tokyo DisneySea.
David was a Disney aficionado throughout his life, collecting trivia and memorabilia beginning in his childhood.
He shared his expertise as a Disney historian in many ways during his career, writing for magazines, speaking at Official Disneyana Conventions and serving as the associate producer for the 1989 Disney Channel special "The Disneyland Story."
David was 46 years old.
