The walk is a little lengthy but do-able, but I wouldn't recommend walking from DHS to the Swan at the end of the day when the kids are tired for example.
I guess that would depend on the kids. We sometimes travel with family friends that have children the same age as you said. They have no problem doing the walk, and actually enjoy it. I know some kids would be completely against it though.
I am going to say it depends on the 6 and 8 year old.
With mine, I would say sure. Some people still have their 6 year olds in strollers (oh lets not start this again ) because they cannot do a full day in the parks.
It may even be less than a mile, and it's a level path, no hills or anything.
I have walked it and jogged it a number of times. If you walk at a decent pace (not pushing it, but not strolling) its faster than taking the Friendship, unless you happen to hit the Friendship perfectly.
When we had small children we always walk to and from Boardwalk Villas to DHS. The walk back made sure the kids where ready to hit the beds once we got to the rooms.
It may be alright going, but I wouldn't suggest doing it coming back. This past December we stayed till the end and the line at the boats was so long we decided to walk DW, DD (13) and DS (11) were not happy campers.
You don't say what time of year you are traveling. We (2-40 something adults) leisurely strolled from DHS to the Yacht Club and it took us 22 minutes on a beautiful April afternoon (upper 70's and no humidity). It was a very nice walk. I would never consider that same walk on a July or August afternoon with 90 plus heat and humidity just as bad. After a long day at the park or even just starting out in the morning during the dog days of Summer, you'd be dripping before you got to the park.
We used to walk to DHS from the Boardwalk. Its a very pleasant, quiet stroll, that not many seem to make, I think we did it 3 times. And it was August. I strolled back barefoot after a day in the parks.
Thanks for all the responses....our trip is May 1-9, and it's our 3 trip in for years with the girls so they are pretty good walkers.....we'll give it a go and see how it works out...
Sure...you can walk but I would think the kids would enjoy the Boat ride more.
The Friendships are an attraction on their own. Especially if you get a fun Boat Captain.
You could walk it but I'd do it only if it was less than 75 degrees. After that it gets pretty uncomfortable and the kids might not enjoy it much. I agree that you'd probably be better off taking a boat. We've walked it from the beach club a couple times when we've just missed the boat and have arrived a little quicker than the boat did.
