Visit to US and IoA last week

Last Wednesday we visited both parks in a single day. We arrived early enough to get there as the parks opened, and we began our plan of attack! LOL. We started at US because we knew it would close at 5pm that day for HHN whereas IoA would be open until 6pm. DH and DS made a beeline for Mummy which they rode 3x while DD and I ran to ET. We wished someone would have told us that many of the attractions did not actually open at 9am, including ET, Disaster, Jaws, and some others. So we couldn't do ET, but instead we ran to Men In Black and rode 2 times ALONE. No one else made it to the back of the park as quickly as we did.

Throughout the rest of the morning, we also eventually hit ET, Disaster, Shrek 4D (Donkey was a hoot after the show), Twister, and Jaws. DH and DS also rode Simpsons. DH is a lover of all thrill rides but he actually hated Simpsons as too herky jerky. I was glad I'd skipped it.

Then we made our way to IoA where - because of your advice and encouragement - I worked up the courage to join the rest of the family on Spiderman. Thank you all for encouraging me - I loved it! Then we split up again so DH and DS could ride Hulk, Dueling Dragons, and Jurassic Park River Ride while DD and I rode Storm Force Accelerator, Cat In the Hat (which surprisingly made me exceptionally nauseous), Caro-Seuss-al, One Fish Two Fish, saw Poseidon's Fury (which seemed to me a huge waste of time), and Pteradon Flyers (which I had read was a very slow loader but we nearly walked right on. Then the kids rode Ripsaw Falls twice without DH and I since we didn't feel like getting soaked. And we managed to get on Spiderman again as well.

It was unbelievable how much we managed to fit into one day. Granted we were running, running, running all day to maximize our experience of attractions, but still the parks had to be fairly empty for us to do what we did. The only attractions I wanted to see but didn't have time for were Terminator and Sindbad. DH wanted to try RRR but it was down for much of the day, and when it was running at the end of the day, it was one of the only rides with a long line so he skipped it.

We had dinner at Bob Marley's on City Walk. DH liked it more than the rest of us, but he likes spicier food than we do. We were all exhausted by the end of the evening but in a good way.

I'm glad you enjoyed yourself and also got on Spiderman. :)
We are going in December and doing both parks in the same day. We have never done this before and it is nice to hear that it can be done.

LovingDisney - you can definitely do both parks in one day if the crowds are like they were for us, as long as you don't mind ALOT of running around. We have taught our kids to be excellent walkers from a young age, and they don't mind schlepping from one end of the park to the other and back again and again. I will admit that we were all exhausted by the end of the evening, but we felt like we had really made the most of our one-day two-park passes.

By the way, it was interesting seeing the construction on Hogwart's Castle in the distance. I hope to get back to visit it in 2011.

Oh I cannot wait for this part of the park to open. I saw some sketches online of the various buildings that will be there and they look awesome.

Which park would you choose to go to if you could only go to one? Universal or Islands of Adventure? We are going in January and will only be going to one park.

Thats a hard question to answer, both parks a equally good in their own way. With the opening of the new roller coaster, I would say Universal Studios edges out IOA. But if that new Harry Potter ride is open at the time of your visit I would do IOA. I am sure others will have different answers and reasons on which one if you can do only one.

If you like thrill rides where the ride is more then the theme, pick IoA. If you are more of a themed ride person with much less thrills, pick Universal.

Honestly, you should be able to do the best of both parks in one day. My fiancee and I were able to do the best of both parks in one day easily in August. This includes 2 meals (at 30 minutes each) and some shows.

Glad you enjoyed your Universal day!

Isn't Cat in the Hat a surprise?
I thought it was like a calm Peter Pan type ride, but then we got on, the ride attendant told me I should take my sunglasses off my head and I soon found out why!

That is a hard one. Hmmm- I probably would pick IoA. I like all the thrill rides better than the theatre sit down rides. But, Mummy in universal is awesome. I have never been on the new one yet, but I can only imagine it too will be awesome.
But, if I only got to choose one- IoA it is.:)

 Yes it is a surprise- I too thought it would be calm. It is a cute little ride though.

Yes! It's so weird because I had no problem on Storm Force Accelerator or Teacups at MK, but The Cat In the Hat really did me in! It seemed so tame but I actually had to sit with my head in my hands for about 10 minutes afterwards to get rid of that queasy feeling! Maybe it was because I had eaten lunch recently? I don't know, but DD loved it.

As for the poster who asked which one park I'd choose for the day, it really would depend on your preferences. US felt like more of a production studio experience. The attractions were more connected to a movie experience and not a simple ride. I felt like Men in Black and ET were the highlight rides for me and DD. DH and DS would pick Mummy as their fave at US. As for IoA, I think there's more to do there in terms of rides, and the park layout is more interesting to tour. I'm sure it will be more so after Harry Potter Land is complete. There's more for young kids to enjoy there, I think, as well as tons of major thrill rides for the older crowd, including Hulk and Dueling Dragons as well as several wet rides. Spiderman alone would make the decision for me to choose IoA over US if I had to. But if it's generally a quiet time of year and your feet are up to it, arrive early and try for both in one day!

I went in December '08 and the crowds were minimal. No wait for any rides, including the roller coasters. I am going back in 4 weeks and am hoping for the same luck!

Jill - Did you ride RRR? I have seen some vids and it looks fun, but I hear it isn't open all day every day. Looking forward to a new thrill!

DisneyLeo - RRR was down when we arrived at US at 9am, but it was running by mid-afternoon. You may not have noticed my many posts indicating that I am a huge scaredy-cat (i.e., fear of trying Spiderman and MIB), so you could not have paid me any amount of money to try RRR! lol. However, DH and DS would have ridden it if the wait hadn't been so long by the end of the day when we went back from IoA to US to let them try it. So I can't give you their feedback, I'm afraid.

Oh I am hoping it won't be too crowded. But this time we did buy the express pass- we have never done it before due to the cost. It was only 25 because I guess it's in the value season. I figured I would spend 25 to guarantee that I will get on every ride once. But I also just found out RRR is not one of the express pass rides. So we are going to try to go there first thing. I hope it's open. I've been reading a lot that it closes.:brick:
