Hi all! I am going to visiting Canada in a few weeks and this will be my first trip there. I'll be going to Montreal and Quebec. I was just wondering if any of you had visited there before and could offer any tips at all about things to see or do? I've gotten a couple of books, but hearing from someone that has actually gone, or lived there, would be even better!! Thanks.... :)

Sorry Ariel, I've only been to Toronto and Thunder Bay. Have fun though, Canada is a beautiful country.

I used to go to Montreal a lot mumble mumble years ago, back when I was single. It was always fun, no matter the season. I wouldn't recommend any clubs or restaurants, since they're probably closed or changed. I often got good tips from clerks in shops as to where the "hot" spots were. You might want to try that.

I lived in Toronto for a year, and went back last year, and found that places had changed quite a bit.

I've been to Quebec.........it's very historical and lotsa shops inside the city walls. The best time to go there is in the winter. It's beautiful with all the snow and they have carnival in January. Theres tons of ice sculptures, they even construct a huge snow castle. Just north of quebec there is a water park(in the summer) in the winter its a lsedding park. If you like it enough I sugest you take a trip during the winter. oh yeah there is a huge mall near by too i dont think its right in quebec but its close by.

Aurevoir!

Ariel-

I usually go to Montreal in the summer--this year I took the trip to Disney instead. On the list of things worth seeing (in no particular order):

a) St Joseph's Oratory--beautiful basilica--breathtaking views of the city (lots of steps, however)
b) Old Montreal--take a walk down by the water to the old city--and make sure you go in the evening when there's lots of street entertainers! Check out Plaza St-Jacques at night!
c)Biodome de Montreal--a zoo (they have live webcams, too--I loved the penguins) in a stadium used for the Olympics in '76
d) Botanical Gardens (across the street from Olympic Park)--absolutely amazing! Plan on spending several hours. Nice place to eat outside!
e) Rue Ste-Catherine--fast pasted street--lots of pople, lots of shopping. Eat outside and watch the people!
f) Rue Ste Denis--more shopping, but small boutiques and such
g) Ile de Notre Dame--park on the small island downtown
h)Bonsecours Market--used to be open market--landmark
i) nightlife on Crescent St :)
j) the underground city
k)Le Saint-Sulpice--bar with outdoor terrance, three stories--my favorite hangout. Spent more nights there than I can count! Very friendly service--go around 10 to snag a table and wait for it to fill up!
l) Mont Royal/parc-de Mont Royal-- great views of the city
m)Olympic Park

Note that eating is big event in Montreal--take your time! Bars are open until I think 4 am--and the night doesn't get started until 11 or 12 at night... And put aside $10CDN to pay the airport tax on leaving Dorval if you're flying. No one escapes without paying it. You can also charge it.

Send me a PM if you have more questions. I had friends from Montreal show me the ropes, so there may be some obvious things left out here in favor of things I found more exciting. Have fun!

Thank you, mightyduck! Glad to know Crescent St is still the place to go. Makes me think it's time for another trip! (with husband, of course)

Only the names have changed, Marcia! You should definitely go....The exchange rate makes it so reasonable, and they don't charge anywhere near as much for restaurants as we pay here, even when you calculate the difference!
