@TheOriginalTiki- Donkey Kong Country

Compared to the other projects, you definitely picked the safest option where you had a basis to go off of in the real world already. That said, you do point out that the DK "area" is mostly just a queue for a single attraction and you definitely fleshed out the IP much more than Universal has thus far, so it's not like choosing the safest option meant you made the safest project. In fact, I'd go so far as to say of the four projects, yours is probably the most ambitions in terms of everything you have in it. Sure, it doesn't have killing nazis or three coasters at a time, but you have some huge heavy hitters and so it's pretty impressive how you handled the project.

Everyone knows you're the coaster guy, so it's not really a surprise that your coaster is the best written of the group. Not that Tegan's or Outbound's were remotely bad, but that love of coasters oozes out of Mine Cart Carnage in a way I rarely see in coaster writeups. It's also incredibly clear how passionate you are about Donkey Kong Country as an IP as well because you managed to put in so many homages to the games that it's honestly impressive. The amount of hidden easter eggs are like Animal Kingdom level of good and so I've got to give you credit for it.

You set out to improve Minecart Madness and despite the fact I've not ridden it and have only seen video, I think you did it quite well. You took the elements that worked (like the jumping minecart) but switched around the stuff that didn't. Making the attraction an indoor coaster with an outdoor element is exactly what it should have been and that change alone improves it immensely. My only issue with this ride in the slightest is the name where I struggle to see how Carnage is a great subtitle. Carnage implies violence and mess where this feels like a real Mine Cart Madness. Maybe another name would've worked better like Mine Cart Mayhem, but like all of the other critiques from all four projects, it's just a nitpick, though nitpicks can be make or break...

Kremling Cove is a great C-ticket addition to the land, really filling out the land with more attractions. I love a good animatronic filled dark ride and that's exactly what you've given us here. Selecting Diddy and Dixie Kong as the heroes we follow is a great choice. You mention it's not the most elaborate thing in the park, but honestly I think the focus on E-tickets in lands and not filling them with stuff like this is a huge issue with real theme park design today. This is a great attraction, possibly even my favorite of your project because of how simple, realistic, effective, and important to the land it is.

As a secondary coaster in the land, Bramble Blast is a great addition. It adds a unique coaster style as well as a more family-friendly coaster while also filling out the land with unique imagery of all of these brambles everywhere. I can imagine this mess of brush and needles everywhere when you pass by and just hearing screams from inside and the whoosh of a coaster being pretty exciting. Again, your ability to just describe a coaster is consistently impressive because if I was writing this I'd have no idea how to go with it.

As the final attraction, River Rampage is super solid and adds another unique ride system to your park in a rapids attraction. I will admit, it's the least detailed of your writeups and I do think that hurts it a tiny bit, but I can still absolutely picture all of the show scenes you're going for and I think it's crazy impressive. As for Mini Game Mayhem, this is a phenomenal way to keep the Super Nintendo World feeling alive throughout the land.

Finally, shops and dining are great. I know they are an afterthought and so I admittedly don't have a ton to say about them, but they all fit well and I love the little market you have going on. Ultimately, this land is a huge success and though of course I have some minor issues, I now have to make my decision and that's going to be INCREDIBLY difficult. Good luck Tiki!

Alright folks, it's time... I've tossed and turned and debated and debated, but I finally have selected how our game should end. I will be revealing fourth place, then third, and finally, the top two in one single post. Congrats to all four players though, just amazing work overall.

Fourth Place
@Tegan pilots a chicken

Truly Tegan, you've killed it this game as you almost always do. From playing leader to taking time off for surgery, you've managed to cling on and continue being someone to look at in high esteem. Your final project was amazing, fantastic even, but ultimately the reading experience just being front-loaded got you down here. It's not to say anything you did is bad, but in a competition this tight, someone has to go down first. Still, thank you so much for playing and I sincerely hope you enjoyed the game, and congrats on getting to finals!

@Lord Fozzinator

I genuinely debated where to put you because ultimately you did have a really fantastic project. I think for what you went for, you knocked it out of the park and on another day with another mood, it's very possible you could've won this one. I absolutely appreciate your reasoning for the Nazi imagery and understand where you are coming from, and also I think you should absolutely stick to your guns on things like that and commend you for it. Still, for me, it just didn't really work as a theme for a theme park land just being a bit too reliant on a hateful ideology's imagery, especially in a park with a Lego Batman and Donkey Kong land. A part of the project was unification and I think if the park was a Rated M violent park I wouldn't have had the same issue, but this just stood out and for that reason you've gotten third.

Still, you've grown so much as a player and making it to the finals is seriously a huge feat, especially with how tough this competition has been. Great work and thank you so much for playing, I hope you enjoyed the game!

Yeah, a different theme probably would have better if a different theme was chosen (I debated Assassin’s Creed: Black Flag as a land but the pirate land trope is a bit overdone in my opinion) but I like to think I made the best out of a not so good of a theme. I just love how I cultivated this persona that if there is something wacky idea, it probably came from me. I had a blast with this game, of course I had some bad moments but overall, I had a great time.

In the words of Dame Judi Dench... and now we come to the present.

It's time to reveal our runner up and the winner for our little game. Both players absolutely could have taken it and I thought long and hard about it. Both players had elements I thought were incredibly strong, both players had some minor shortcomings, and both players games this entire game have been the best I saw. I think we have two absolute titans here with Outbound and Tiki and no matter who wins, I think we all do for having witnessed this. That said...

Second Place
@Outbound

Outbound, you're easily one of the players I get most excited about seeing join a game. Your creativity, artistry, realism, and everything else you do are always astounding. LEGO Batman as a land was absolutely brilliant and all of your attractions were phenomenal. Your entire game was incredible as well with highlights like Crossroads City still standing out to me all this time later. That said, my biggest qualm here was your E-ticket just visiting all of the same locations in the land. It's such a minor nitpick that if you're mad at me for that knocking you down I don't even blame you, but when it was this close, it really did come down to do I think Outbound's ride visits too many of the same places you see in the land or do I think Tiki should've renamed his mine cart coaster more. That's literally what it came to. Either way, thank you so much for playing and I hope you enjoyed as much as I enjoyed watching you!

But with that, we have our winner. Ladies, gentlemen, enbys and others, I present...

@TheOriginalTiki

Tiki's DK land may have seemed the safest choice but he went absolutely wild with it and developed four amazing attractions in a land that really stood out. Tiki also managed to play an incredibly strong game from working as a team player to completing a speed round basically singlehandedly. This is a well-earned victory, but all four of you and everyone else who played should be incredibly proud of yourselves!

For me, this was a blast to host and I hope that my hosting, reviews, and prompts kept you guys engaged and happy throughout the entire experience. I sincerely hope you enjoyed Visions Fantastic: An Imagineering Competition... Season One?

With that, I sign off. It's absolutely not required, but if you think your service was exemplary tonight, I'd certainly appreciate it. Thank you and hope to see you all soon in Imagineering Weekends!

@TheOriginalTiki - Donkey Kong Country

I’ve started all of these reviews with reservations about the premise but I’ve got nothing along those lines this time around, Donkey Kong is a very natural fit for a theme park land, and while it has technically been done before, you’re absolutely right that the section in Super Nintendo World is basically just one ride so that’s not really a problem. I’m also a bigger fan of DK than the other three franchises represented here so this is a super easy sell for me, all you’ve got to do is stick the landing and you’ll have a hit on your hands.

If Mine Cart Madness is so good then why isn’t there a Mine Cart Madness 2? You’re kind of obligated to incorporate the minecart stages into a theme park adaptation, so I’ll forgive you for the repeat, especially cause the original attraction is apparently not reviewing super duper well so a sequel is justified. The choice to make Mine Cart Carnage primarily indoors is a good one as, while there are outdoors minecart levels, the whole mineshaft aesthetic is the most iconic look for them. As for the ride itself, this is a scenario where I don’t have a whole lot to say and that’s a good thing, both the references to the levels from the original games and all the detailed set pieces are nailed so well that I can immediately picture the ridethrough experience and, yeah, I can imagine this would be a really fun one. Perfect headliner, no notes!

Kremling Cove was already gonna get props for adding variety with the DKC2 representation, but it rose majorly in my appraisal when you brought up that Kleever set piece, that sounds one of a kind and magical while still being reasonably possible to actually construct. I’m worried this review might come out a bit lackluster cause you’re not giving me a lot to complain about haha.

Bramble Blast is another example of your skill when it comes to describing coasters, as there’s a lot of good detail here for a more basic ride on premise, and like, the Bramble levels rule so of course I’m a fan of this one.

Even if Kiddie Kong is not a particularly iconic face nowadays, doing a DKC 3 focused ride is super appreciated because I kind of felt like you were gonna push it to the side since it’s the least loved of the original 3, but I’m super glad you didn’t let the original trilogy go incomplete. The inclusion of the additional kongs (including Bluster, my GOAT) and the octopus from Tropical Freeze does a lot to make the land feel like a definitive representation of the series (Except Bananza but that’s something of a soft reboot for the series so it’s fine).

Incorporating collect-a-thon elements into a DK land is super appreciated given how important that aspect of the games is, and getting some more Kongs in here, once again, helps the land feel complete (Also all the references to the DKC show have gotta be for me personally because I love that terrible show so much). I do wish that the K O N G letters and puzzle pieces were elaborated on more as while they would be cool inclusions, if you didn’t have time to go into any detail on them then maybe it would’ve been better to cut them?

And now for dining and shopping! I’m pretty sure that the Crystal Coconut is in DK64 but it’s way funnier that you explicitly say it’s a reference to the cartoon so I’ll give it a pass. You got a smile out of me when you listed all the different banana products available at DK’s Banana Bar, and bananas are delicious so of course I’m a fan. The Kongvention Cave is a little rushed but there’s plenty of good ideas here and I was a fan of both the Jenny Nicholson reference and the name DK’s Banana Slamma.

Since I’ve been so positive on this project I’ll finish off by complaining! While all the original art and inclusion of reading music (a must given the iconicity of these games’ soundtracks), I was definitely not a fan of the presentation overall, as having to go through six different forum posts when this could have just been a Google Doc left a sour taste in my mouth, but given how big a fan I was of the rest of the project, I can’t hold it against you too much.

This was easily my favorite of the four, and while I was about to wish you good luck, it looks like it’s a little late for that! Congratulations on the well earned victory Tiki, and thank you to our wonderful host @PerGron and all the fantastic (haha) players that made this game so much fun, see you all around!

CONGRATULATIONS TIKI! A well-deserved win. You left your mark on the season, from the speed rounds to spies to the mini golf. I was really amazed by how you drew out all 36 holes in the resort! And I really appreciate hand-drawn concept art, as that’s something we don’t see too often in games; you can tell I sorta started emulating that later on haha. Donkey Kong Country was super well-written, to be honest, every finalists’ land was, but yours had an extra layer of realism and polish that’s very impressive and is deserving of the win.

(I definitely see the critiques for LEGO Batman: Land, and actually having thought on the location diversity, I agree, so thanks for the suggestion to improve!)

Thank you @PerGron for hosting, this has been a great competition and I’m so happy to see these games continue to thrive.

Now, I’ll be turning my attention to the imagineering weekends, as I have a lot of ideas for the week I’ll be hosting, stayed tuned…

I'm honestly kind of speechless. This is absolutely one of the high points of my entire Armchair Imagineering career. The fact that I faced A LOT of internal doubt and mental health issues basically throughout the whole competition makes the victory all the sweeter. Honestly this past week has been ROUGH in that department.

Around mid day yesterday I'd still had barely anything written besides the initial post with the intro and Mine Cart Carnage, and I was really struggling with my energy since I'd stayed up way too late the night before but procrastinated playing video games instead of actually working. There were some very real moments yesterday where I considered just respectfully bowing out, and I'm so glad I pushed through it. Not just because it resulted in a victory, but because Donkey Kong Country is something I can be super proud of. The first two games are among my absolute all time favorites, and I even have a soft spot for 3 so I'm super proud of how I was able to combine elements of all three of the games together into one cohesive land.

Big thanks once again to PerGron for hosting and coming up with an awesome set of prompts. If you decide to do a season two BY ALL MEANS please include me in the planning and I'd be more than happy to be a co-judge. Especially with the actual name of the competition I really do think that this right here is a true spiritual successor to So, You Want to be an Imagineer. I'm also kind of a sucker of the "full circle" element of me winning the first season of that.

I'd like to take some time to praise my fellow finalists, because I truly had my work cut out for me with this one.

@Tegan pilots a chicken to tell you the truth, if it wasn't going to be me I was actively rooting for you to win. I actually think it's CRAZY that you've yet to win a major comp, and your Roller Coaster Tycoon project just hit all the right nostalgic notes for me. We didn't work together a ton but it was a pleasure working with you through the final couple rounds and I very much admire all the personal dedication you've put into this thing.

@Lord Fozzinator over the years I've seen a lot of players in your mold who start off super young and obviously lacking experience in their first couple comps only to consistently grow and improve with each comp they take part in, and I honestly think you might be THE poster child for that archetype. It's been such a pleasure to see you come into your own throughout the time you've been on the forum, and I have no doubt that progress will continue. I also have to acknowledge that while it probably would have turned out to be an absolute mess you have no idea how much I actively wanted to do the whole park with the "Killing Nazis" theme. In the current political climate I think it was super brave and inspiring of you to take that on and having a whole park with variations on that theme really would have been something. I'm not sure if that something would have turned out to be amazing or terrible, but it most certainly would have been SOMETHING.

@Outbound I honestly don't know what to say about you that hasn't already been said. While you and I weren't on teams a lot together so I don't think I got a full grasp on your game, your name alone just embodies quality work and technical know how within this community and you're absolutely one of the GOATs here. I feel like you've already proven yourself time and time again before the competition, but this competition just continues to cement your legacy.

I rarely talk politics, but I also think it's super fitting that this competition ended on a night where the left got some MAJOR wins. It's incredible that this community is still as strong as it is and that were still able to crack out rock solid competitions like this, and I can't wait to see where we go from here.

Well folks, with that I really really hope you’ve enjoyed Visons Fantastic. I’m gonna take some time to rest before the next big game whenever that is (maybe sometime next year?? 😉). It’s been an absolute blast to host this game and if yall want to see a Season 2 at some point in the future, who knows, maybe it’s something I’ve already started drafting up.

Until my weekend to host Chaos Debates though, if you need me tag me, because I’m going on a hosting vacation!

Amazing game! Amazing job hosting! One of the most fun and uplifting games I've ever played! Really could feel the community coming together for this game in such a fun and genuine way. The finalists all did incredible and I do not envy the choice you were faced with at all. Really a fantastic game and I'm already excited for season 2 whenever it comes!

@TheOriginalTiki what an amazing Final project and a well deserved win! Congratulations! Go celebrate with your banana horde, magic balloons, and well written rap songs the way Donkey Kong would want you to celebrate!

Speaking of ride concepts that are too weird to seriously imagine, we have The Dark Knight’s Finest Hour! Okay so I’m being a little harsh but as cool as the gimmick of a ride vehicle changing mid ridethrough is, I have no idea how it could ever actually work, because while I understand that the ride system doesn’t actually change, I don’t get how you could attach new parts to the vehicle in reality (are they just extending out via unseen springs?), and I definitely don’t get how Batman and Robin could “speed build” them on, given that that whole mechanic is always represented by a cartoonish animation of the characters jumping around at impossible speeds. Maybe I’m missing something and there is a way this effect could take place, but if that’s so then it definitely needed to be communicated better. To alleviate my harshness, I’ll once again give mention to your understanding of the type of sight gags these games excel at, as well as the clever choice to emulate the first game’s progression system through the 3 sections.
@Lizzy May Bee , thanks for your extenstive reviews. I realized I never quite explained this, but I had a vision in my head and poorly explained it in the write-up, so I'll diagram it here.

Basically, the vehicle (which is a single tracked, dark ride that can speed up to 20-mph-ish), slows down to 2-3mph for the reconstruction scene. As Vicki Vale (reporter) sets up the next chapter, animatronics of Batman and Robin rise up from either side of the vehicle. They are attached to a moving platform, not visible from riders' view, which matches the vehicle. All the animatronics do then is pivot the shoulder joints fast so it looks like they're building (which is the simple animation they do in the game).

As they finish, slowly small parade-float-like overlay rise up and attach to the blank vehicle, resembling lego pieces, so from the rider's perspective something has been built. Of course, looking from the outside its clear these are just extra pieces for view's sake.

Top-left is plan view, showing the animatronic's platform moving alongside the vehicle. Top-right shows the motion back and forth for each Batman/Robin. Middle shows the platform ascending up to attach to the vehicle. Below, the two sections are for the first room (ground to water, the track descends into water, but actually its not a boat ride) and second room (the tracks ascends from the water, and latches onto an above track to become suspended - I'm pretty sure this has been done before), finally, bottom is birds-eye perspective.

IMG_9337.jpg

At the very front, there's a black screen mimicking total darkness beyond. The black screen lights up as the build completes and the icon "Batboat" or "Batwing" appears, similar to how you unlock vehicles in the game.
