Agreed with this and if you want to get really technical, Pooh's Playful Spot wasn't a "ride" and didn't use the same space that 20k did other than pretty much the queue area. The majority of the lagoon and show building area was behind the wall they added to PPS. Even more to the point, Mermaid is reusing two walls from the original 20k attraction that never came down. Or you could take it a step further to mention that after 20k the lagoon was a M&G and one side was part of the original Ariel's Grotto so technically AG replaced 20k. I mean if you wanted to be a real stickler for it all, the list would go more like 20k, M&G, AG, PPS and then Under the Sea. But... is there really any point in debating what replaced what or for that matter, arguing it? LOL! :D

Thank you! I was going to mention the wall they incorporated into Mermaid and Ariel's Grotto. Given how 20K is gone, and how Mermaid has the homage and is on the same land, I guess "spiritually" . . . or something like that . . . 20K was replaced by Mermaid. It is interesting how three aquatic themed attractions have existed in this general area, maybe four if you consider Ariel's new Meet and Greet.

Disney made a big deal out of the hair in this attraction, and to me it was one of the hardest components to get right.

They made a big deal out of the one aa figures hair. I'm not sure how we extrapolate that to the entire attraction or this scene?

They made a big enough deal about Ariel's animatronic hair in general on the ride. I think their attempts were solid for the underwater effect of flowing hair. However once they're above water it doesn't make sense to stick with the plastic look.

Folks may see things different, and Mermaid does sit on 20K's former site and without the removal of 20K, Mermaid would not be possible. Folks say Pooh replaced Toad, and there is a tribute of Owl receiving Toad Hall's deed, likewise there is a similar homage to 20K in Mermaid.

Well pooh DID replace toad as toad was specifically closed to make way for pooh. A claim that can't be made about 20k.

Tributes to past attractions are iirelevant.. They are simple tips of the hat and Easter eggs.
Once again, there is a total number of rides, taking away 20K, although some rides were added and taken away later doesn't change the loss of 20K.

So what? If you are going to simply look at the park's cumulative capacity stuff. What ride replaced the swan boats? Splash mountain? Or what replaced the keel boats?? The park has added attractions since they were closed.. So which do you consider as replacing those?

Given this, I don't think we should be describing such comments by posters as being "stupid" as it is hard to say which ride Mermaid replaced when look at the total tally, given that rides have different capacities, it could be that Mermaid made up for the slack due to the loss of a couple rides.

Maybe because there is a difference between 'replacing capacity' which is a park attribute vs 'replacing an attraction' which is a direct association between two distinct things.

If I move out of an apartment and move across town to another... You don't say 'that apartment was replaced by my house'

After looking at the photos posted in this thread, i'm not sure I prefer King Triton's new hair:

I think it looks a bit too bulky, almost like a towel wrapped around his head.

Compared to the DCA version:

I don't think this change turned out too well, and I prefer the DCA real hair version for Triton.

King Triton also serves as a stark reminder that I haven't been to the gym lately. :(

I think the ride is beautiful in design and the animatronics look great...but I am VERY unhappy with the shortcut in the story. When you are building a ride from scratch you have the opportunity to do whatever you want with no restrictions. Why not have a GIANT Ursula in the grand finale instead of some cheap shadow of Ursula in the background?

What...would Disney think this is too "scary" for the young ones if they did this?! Let me let you in on a little secret.....the little ones WATCH the scary parts of these movies and it does them good to see evil lose and their heroes and heroines come out victorious. A Giant Ursula could have been fantastic and completed the story.

I think this is a nice ride...but Disney missed a tremendous opportunity to make this a NEW type of dark ride to redefine a generation. As it stands...I will go on it once....and probably never need to again.

Because Disney ordered 2 of everything because they had every intention of building an exact clone since the beginning?

It's not only that they short changed one of Disney's best villains . . . but also that the changed the story. They have a screen that shows Ariel kissing Eric and getting her voice back, (a silhouette type thing) . . . didn't happen that way in the movie, Ariel didn't kiss Eric in time, and she turned back into a Mermaid on the deck of Eric's ship.

They don't need to show this, but they really did alter the storyline from the film.

Tony Baxter's version of the ride had a gigantic Ursula scene. They didn't need to show Ursula being rammed by Eric. They have a little cut-out Ursula wiggling with explosions around her . . . she looks like she is about 8" tall, and something that a sixth grader could build. I know they were cramped for space, but during the second half of the ride with the cut-outs and screen Ariels, I just sort of zone out as there isn't much to see.

I just saw a picture on Twitter a few minutes ago and overnight last night they swapped out Triton's hair and it now looks essentially the same as he does in the DCA edition of the attraction.

Twitter @http://forums.wdwmagic.com/members/.52159/: So, King Triton's beard in Under the Sea now looks like real hair. The felt "Arts 'n' Crafts" beard was temporary. #NewFantasyland

I'm going to post this before I read any other reviews:

I think the ride is a lovely addition to the FLE. The queue is very immersive, although I wonder how long the waterfalls will last. Some of the animatronics are amazing; Ursula is just so realistic, with her fluid movements, and it looks as though she's actually saying her dialogue. They've really hit the nail on the head as far as she goes. As is Scuttle for some reason. Does Sebastian have the same voice in the 'Under The Sea' segment as in the movie? His other song 'Kiss The Girl' sounds like the movie Sebastian, but not under the sea? Hmm still.
Thank goodness they got rid of ice cream cone haired Ariel! Looks sooo much better how they've done it now.
I think though they could have pushed the boat out a little more. The 'cartoony' bits, such as when Ariel gets her legs, and the part where they kill off Ursula I think could have been done with animatronics. It looks cheap and tacky and like they couldn't be bothered, as do all the animatronics in the 'Under The Sea' segment that just go round, and round and round. They could have had them doing something surely? Still, I like that scene, plenty going on in it, lots to look at etc.
And it seems to finish really quick. A few more scenes would have been nice, possibly the killing of Ursula, as she's just a little bit in the background. No mention of Triton killing her or anything.

Besides all of this I am still very much looking forward to seeing it when we go next year! A lovely addition to the FLE, although arguably not better than 20k.

Differences from DCA in the ride that I noted because there are actually a few!
5. Flotsam and Jetsam are not animated in the Florida version apparently, they are fully animated at DCA.

I hope these changes will eventually come to DCA.

True:

Take a look at 4.05.

Does the FLE have them talking but not moving? Perhaps if this is the case, they just haven't turned them on yet.

Edit: I see that this has already been discussed! Glad they will eventually move!

I was thinking...what they could have done with Ursula's defeat is simply mimic the sea-battle scene in POTC, with a big Ursula AA on one side and the Prince's ship on the other, with the ship's spar arching over our heads and piercing Ursula, (no blood!), and they're battling (and we're right in the middle of it!) and Ursula's tentacles are waving and there's a big thunderstorm going on. Then we pass on to the scene with the Prince and Ariel on the balcony (where Ariel gets her voice back) and that little cut-out scene on the right shows Ursula sinking and smoke rising and what's left of the Prince's ship sinking with her. I think that added fight scene solves the broken narrative, and if it's done right, I don't think it'd traumatize the kiddies any more than the battle scene does in POTC. :)

That would work if they used a ride system like Peter Pan or Pooh, but not with an Omnimover--if Ursula "dies" how do you reset her given that there is no period of time when guests aren't watching her? Personally, there are other portions of the ride that I don't love (most significantly some of the cheap animatronics in the Under the Sea room) but I think they dealt w/ Ursula's death appropriately--given the ride system.

Oh good! I never liked the hair at DCA, it didn't keep with the design of the ride... but the original FL hair design just looked like a towel wrapped around his head.
This new hair seems to find a nice medium :)
