Absolute rubbish. Fire and explosions belong in Vegas or a Jersey Shore resort. Not in the beautiful Village / Downtown Disney.

There is no overarching theme, no placemaking. No reason for a thirty foot volcano to be next to a Florida swamp lake. Just loud special effects for the sake of it. The equivalent of a b-movie that revolves around effects and explosions.
lol, it's not like the volcano is new. It's been there since the restaurant opened...

Gone are the days of taking a quiet evening stroll by the water with beautiful sparkling trees and the gentle turning of a paddle wheel...

Exactly. T-Rex's in Florida, that makes sense. Mismatched socks store, totally 2000 year old back story and don't even get me started how perfectly themed a jean store fits in Downtown Disney. You are absolutely correct on spotting the first non-cohesive thing at Downtown Disney.

This is such a ridiculous discussion. DTD is a shopping/entertainment district (as is CityWalk). THAT is your theme. Anything goes beyond that, it's not a theme park.
Au contraire, mon ami. The Buena Vista Village did have a theme. It is only the constant giving in to the wish of individual outside vendors to outshout their neighbours with loud, abrassive signs for attention that has turned the place into the non-themed mess it is now.

You are correct. No theme, no placemaking. Just fun. Makes DtD a more fun place than it was before. This is good. DtD as it was before these effects is less fun than DtD with these effects (of course, based on only the video, I'm speculating here, but your argument isn't affected by that).

Quoted because I agree with this.
My first reaction was how crazy and over-the top I thought this was, and it was impressive in the same way that any big ball of fire would be.
Then I thought a little about the concept art that they have released for Disney Springs, and how much I liked what they looked to be trying to do there. This just seems exactly opposite to that effort. Strolling along those calming waterways and "bubbling streams", the waterfront area, and all of a sudden, a giant volcano is belching fire in the distance? It just seems like, if they were truly trying to "placemake" Disney Springs at all, they would have toned down the Rainforest Cafe, not turned it up to 11. It gives me less confidence in Disney Springs as a whole, rather than more.

Yay!

In a themed environment the parts work together for the whole. A belching volcano is cool and all. But it needs to further the story, add to the placemaking. Else it doesn't improve, but lessens the whole. A random fire-spewing volcano in a shopping district only distracts, rather than adds.

Main Street doesn't improve with a massive AT-AT walking in Town Square. Regardless of how fun that is in itself. SSE doesn't improve with a massive fire-breating dragon on top, but Potter does.

While the Disney Village Marketplace may have had a cohesive theme at one point, that is long gone, so this doesn't bother me in the least. Its not like its going to erupt constantly.
