Thanks for the video, Steve! Nice little ceremony; I liked the character parade with the old parade/anniversary music.

The only thing that struck me as strange was that one female ambassador and her stupid "Welcome to Magic Kingdom Park at Walt Disney World" opening. Honestly, could she have made that sound any more corporately awkward? :brick:

Nice photos....many thanks for sharing!

The Retro map is great...and it is nice to see our ol' pal the Orange Bird back front and center! Yay!

I agree. Adding "park" onto the name never works well, and always makes you sound like an overly-scripted corporate robot. That poor Ambassador sounded like an animatronic being controlled by corporate lawyers hiding in a dungeon somewhere.

And if they have just changed the name of the place to "Magic Kingdom Park", they'll need to get the sign department to change this ASAP...

Ya I'm surprised she didn't add resort to the end. "welcome to Magic Kingdom park at the Walt Disney World resort".

Why didn't they get Julie Andrews to fly out and appear at this ceremony?!?

She was the official hostess for the Grand Opening TV Special in 1971, and it would have been a real treat to see her back in that role for the 40th. She's a real pro; just send her out there on stage to say a few words about the opening and just let her be Julie Andrews for five minutes. What a thrill to have her back there!

Julie Andrews also was the official Ambassador for Disneyland's 50th and she appeared in multiple ceremonies at Disneyland during the 50th year. She absolutely shined in that role and could speak so warmly and genuinely about Walt and her time with him at Disneyland and working for Disney. She would bring the audience to tears at Disneyland during the 50th, and she could have done the same at Magic Kingdom Park on Saturday.

What a missed opportunity to not fly her out to Orlando for a couple days and give her the microphone for a bit on October 1st. :(

Because flying a 76 year old woman out to speak for a minute is crazy. Also she probably wanted to enjoy her own birthday yesterday.

Question for those who might know:

The Dapper Dan in teal who spoke before they sang... Is it just me, or is he "the voice of the Magic Kingdom" who does all of the park announcements?

If there is half a creative brain left in tdo she should at least return for the 50th, that one would be more proper. Watched that video the other day and
its amazing what talent she has, shame we don't get that in this day and age anymore

Shes a pretty healthy 76y/o. If she had been asked to do just this Im sure she would have. She is very dedicated to the Disney Brand.
She'll be there for the 50th

It was a nice little ceremony. They certainly delivered what they promised and nothing more. I thought there was a missed opportunity to do something a little more. A video would have been nice - maybe highlights of the opening ceremony 40 years ago or show the original dedication by Roy. But alas, we had two extremely awkward ambassadors, a nice little speech by Meg Crofton (probably written by her assistant), and Phil Holmes' "look how far I have come" speech. Don't get me wrong - It was nice enough - but I think a little more effort could have been put into the entire production.

Yeah, any recent public appearance by Julie Andrews seems to indicate she is looking and feeling just fine, particularly for a 76 year old.

What about Glen Campbell? He's still with us, and I bet he would have been happy for the gig to fly to Orlando for a couple days and appear at the ceremony and play one of the songs he did for the grand opening in '71. A repeat of Glen Campbell doing this number from '71 would have fit in great on Saturday. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Qg1KhR95F9c&feature=related

Oh, well. What's done is done. And the cupcakes weren't even free. :lookaroun

Will Julie Andrews be around for the 50th? She'd be 86 by then, and there you get to a situation where she may have passed on, or truly not be in a condition to travel and make public appearances. Same with Glen Campbell. They really seem to have missed a good opportunity to do something with these folks for the 40th. A missed opportunity all around, quite frankly.

But, I'm sure there will be some former Custodial CM dressed up in a business suit from JCPenney to be the Resort's "Ambassador" and give the 50th speech in 2021.

Hmm.... good point about Roy's speech. Do they ever play Roy's dedication speech on October 1st? I can't say that I've ever heard it or seen it, anywhere.

Walt's opening day speech of Disneyland is played a lot; nightly during the Remember fireworks show, and then every July 17th in a nice little "rededication" ceremony they do for Disneyland's birthday each year. Here's Disneyland's rededication ceremony from last summer, and the big Walt speech comes at the 1:45 second mark, before the swelling musical refrain and peace doves. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WDNyjD22KF4

They broadcast Walt's speech all over the park at Disneyland every July 17th. They really play it up with that speech. But I've never heard or seen mention of Roy's opening day speech for WDW. Why is that, I wonder?

Yet again, here's a really fascinating example of how the same division of the same company can have such different cultures on each coast. :veryconfu
