Victoria and Albert's for mom and son

I was thinking of taking my mom and I there for my birthday dinner while we are there next September. Is it mostly couples who eat at the restaurant? Looking at comments and pictures it looks mostly like couples and I don't want us to feel out of place. I know it is expensive and have heard it is worth the money that is why I am interested in eating there. Any advice would be great from those who have experienced it. Thanks!

Depends, are you foodies? If so, then go for it. If not, I'd skip it as its a very romantic restaurant and I assume you last name is not Lannister or Targaryan.

One Little Spark...

I can think of a variety of other meals / restaurants that have amazing atmosphere at less cost (and dress requirements...Vic and Als has a very stern dress code, from what I've heard)...

Other places to consider:

Jikos (hands down my favorite restaurant on property for ambiance and food...plus, it's fun to show up a bit early for your reservation and walk the AKL hotel and savannah)

Yachtsman Steakhouse

Kouzzina (look into the Chefs Table, for the money you are looking to spend, you'll find this a fantastic food experience...note, you don't get to pick the menu for a chef's table meal, but if you've ever done one...they are awesome!)

Le Cellier (I think a bit overrated, but still a really good signature dine)

California Grille (Book about 30 - 45 minutes before the MK fireworks, tell them you want to try and do a fireworks view when you book. They won't guarentee it, but they'll note it on the ADR for you. Then, show up about 30 minutes before your reservation and tell the hostess the same thing. You may have a wait, but there isn't much better than viewing the MK fireworks from the top of the Contemporary while nibbling on your dessert!)

Narcossees (Same advice as above.)

Ohana (Same advice as above. They used to actually pipe in the Wishes music as the fireworks go off, and the tables along the windows are all normally two tops, so you are very likely to get seated right at a window. Fantastic food as well)

Victoria and Albert's is certainly a foodie's dream, but so is Kouzzina (owned by Kat Kora from Iron Chef)...

If you want to go to V&A with your mom, do so. Don't worry about it. It is not pointedly romantic. It is romantic in the sense that any fine restaurant, where kids are not present, where you are waited on, and where the food is excellent is going to be romantic - if the people are romantically involved. But it is not as if they are playing love songs, drawing hearts on the plate, and giving you a private room to make goo-goo eyes at your dinner partner in. I have seen many parties of more than two eating there.

I think that if the food and atmosphere (and cost) is something that both you and your mom would enjoy (or in the case of cost, not mind) then I think it would bery nice for you to take your mom there.

I would definitely do it. My cousin brought her son for his graduation present from high school. He loves fine foods and they had a great time. I have seen many non couple dinning at V & A's. It is a very lovely restaurant that is very expensive. But for those of us who truly love and enjoy food, it is a bargain. I would definitely go and enjoy the time you can spend with your mom. It will make a great memory for the both of you. Enjoy!

Then you have obviously never eaten in the new King Goo-Goo Eyes room. They spray pheromones in the air, and only seat people at tables with one love seat.

I have gone there several times with my daughter and son in law. I guess I was too dumb or too involved in my food to realize it was a couples place! I saw many tables of four. I never felt like we didn't belong because we weren't a couple. I think you will have a wonderful time and not feel out of place at all. Your mom is one lucky woman, she also raised you well if you want to take her someplace special like this. Come to think of it, you mom deserves this for doing such a good job!

A quick question for those of you have eaten here: how long did the meal take? I just wanted to know for child care arrangements and I didn't want to start another similar thread.

@stefan74-I think you should take your mom. That is a really sweet gesture. I would be touched if my son wanted to treat me to a dinner here. :)

Has anyone tried the wine pairings with the meal. I want to eat in the main dining room not the Queen Victoria or Chef's Table. We are both adventurous eaters as well. I can't wait to surprise her!!
