Via Napoli vs real NY pizza?

hey guys :) I have a holder reservation for my epcot day... not sure if I just want to snack around the world this day for lunch or visit Via Napoli.... I am from NY so I'm used to good pizza. I hear people rave about via napoli, but now that I moved to SC I can see why someone from here would rave about any pizza that does not come from here (unless you're really interested in dominos o_O)
I don't want to go there and be disappointed

Any input from anyone who has tried both?

Hi @Jess G -according to my husband, his father used to say that "s*x is like pizza, even if it's bad, it's still pretty good"

That being said, having grown up on NY pizza (and of course not all NY pizza is the same-no offense to anyone who grew up upstate (and by upstate I mean anything north of the Bronx), the pizza is inherently different. I've not had the pizza at Via Napoli, but I would go on Yelp and check out the reviews, look at the pictures and even do some digging around to see if the Yelpers are from NY-who better to be a judge. Just on pictures alone, the slices look different than what I grew up with-Via Napoli seems to have a very thick crust. It would be akin to someone coming from Italy and trying a NY slice for the first time-it may not be what they're used to, but it's still pretty decent. My opinion would be "When In Rome" and go for it. As long as you fold your slice and don't use a knife and fork, I think it's a fairly safe bet. Buon Appetito!

Via Napoli pizza is not New York pizza. You can get Via Napoli style pizza on NY not many places make it.

It's much closer to good pizza you would get in Italy and not the $6.50/ piece square pizza sold to tourists in Rome.

I've had great NY pizza and pretty decent pizza in Italy but also disgusting pizza in Italy. Via Napoli is better than or equal to the pizza I've had in Italy.

Personally, I think the pizza sucks compared to many great places in NYC or where I live... Plus, quality control is a nightmare... Some slices have stuff on it and others have none... A few posters have shared pictures and it was pretty embarrassing... I wouldn't go back if someone else was paying.... Plus, service was slow and very loud... Major pass for us.

I got a pizza with mushrooms on it and you could tell they came from a can. They were not fresh and had that taste and texture they get from being brined in a can. For what they charge for a pizza, they should be using fresh mushrooms.

Via Napoli does a wood fired oven pizza. Not your typical NYC style pizza. I have eaten more than enough pizza in and around NYC - It is not NYC style pizza, but it is not trying to be either.

If you have ever had pizza made in a wood (or if you can find a place - coal) oven, then you know what to expect. A lighter style pizza, with a freshier sauce (think a grandma pie, but with a thin crust). It is good pizza - if you like that style. There are a couple of places around here that do wood fired thin crust. I would place Via Napoli a notch below 900 Degrees, and above Wood Stack (you can look up those two restaruants to get an idea).

As far as toppings are concerened. I would rather have marinated mushrooms on my pizza, rather than fresh. Maybe thats just me, but it's what I like.

They do seem to have a problem with topping distribution, I will give you that. Reminds me of the blueberry muffin scene from Casino

Not sure if you had flat bread pizza company wood fire pizza... Via isn't even on the same planet for crust and toppings... IMHO

Never ate there. I think pizza is a very subjective thing. Some people like a big chewy mess, others like a more asture pie. Same goes for the amount of char on the crust. That is one of the reasons that i prefer one restaruant here over an other. The place chars the crust a bit too much for my tastes - an undercurrent of "burnt" runs through the entire pie - it could be charred crust, it could be the wood that they are using and how they burn it. However, it really is the service that stops me from comming back - frendly, but slow slow slow slow.

Via Napoli has okay pizza.....but even though they call it thin crust.....it's not like crispy, thin crust pizza here in the NJ/NY area.

It's good, but I don't crave it. I still say the BEST pizza at Disney is from Picabu (formerly Tubbi's) at the Dolphin.

Agree 150%. I'll trot out my old Via Napoli pizza picture again a bit later tonight. That picture sure has made the rounds.

Okay. So I have posted this before, but it bears repeating. Here is the pizza that we were served last summer at Via Napoli - our toppings were mushrooms and tomato - Please look at the topping distribution :
Via Napoli bad pie.JPG

Yup, we have several slices with almost nothing on it, and other slices that are tomato paradise, and most of the mushrooms are on one-two slices. And the crust looks raw and burnt at the exact same time. I've tried to be nice about this, but looking back on it, it was pretty bad pie.

Compare that to this pizza, from Salvatore's Coal Oven Pizza in Port Washington (Long Island) NY, our favorite pizza anywhere -

Salvatore's coal oven pizza.JPG

I believe that is spinach, tomato, and ricotta, plus delicious. It might not look like it, but thin crust, crunchy, savory, and amazing.

Oh, plus, if you look closely underneath the pizza, you will notice that they gave us some extra sauce. They always do that at Salvatore's. At Via Napoli, we asked the waitress for some extra sauce (as you can see, that pie needs it) and she looked at us like we had three heads, nodded, and walked away. We never saw her again until the check was delivered. Grrr.

Don't think I can go back to Via Napoli. And I wanted to love it.
