This is a video of the sun from the SOHO satellite launched by NASA, sped up to show the movement and sunspot activity over a period of days. We are supposed to be in solar minimum, meaning that sunspots have gone away. Sunspots are supposed to show up every 11 years, but this last cycle has been more active than any others in recorded history. I thought it was pretty cool, so here it is :)

Yes, that is true that there is an 11 year solar cycle. But there have been times when there have been "no max" or a "dull" year for sunspots. There have been other times during a "solar max" when chronal mass ejections were so huge that 3 days later there were reports of Northern Lights as far South as JAMACIA!
