venting about something I saw/heard yesterday

There is a book, been out for a while, titled 'Guns of the South". It is a fictional story of the American Civil War, where a group of South Africans travelled back in time and aided the Confederacy in winning the war (brought back 20th century weapons). After winning the war, the South then fought the South Africans. You see, the only reason the South Africans travelled back in time was to preserve slavery. Robert E. Lee, who was to be president of the new nation, wanted to end slavery. . . it was a war on states rights, wasn't it???

Why post that here and now. I really don't know other than to say that things happen for a reason. History is just that and cannot be changed. Are Americans arrogant. . . without a doubt. Do we as a Nation defend our Flag. . . most definitely, it is the visible symbol of our FREEDOMS. Is the world better off with America or without? I'll let you answer that one.

Should this thread end. . . Heck ya!!

And I do read books, American History books. Could the US have stayed out of the war? Probably not. Was the US thought of better during the Clinton years? Morally. . .NO. Policy wise . . maybe, we stayed out of alot then. Probably could have gotten Bin Laden if we would have acted????

This is my last post on this matter and that is not a threat.

I've tried to stay out of the political realm here but:

The only country over zealot about morality is the USA; what does the presidents private life have to do with his public life? I'd rather have a president cheat on his wife, than start a war. So who had a problem with the whole Clinton "morality" issue...only those who were against him from the beginning...

AND THAT IS MY LAST POST ON THIS THREAD!

Point 1. Arrogance is not an attribute that is unique to the citizens of the US.

Point 2. People, not flags or pieces of paper define nations.

Point 3. No US? Then id have to say that many of the things that I enjoy in my life wouldn’t exist. The US is a product of its parts, if it is such a bad a place why do so many still try to go there? That old phrase oportunity springs to mind.

Point4. Dubbya and Clinton, I am fascinated by the level of passion that this debate causes, so as someone who has had to respond to the actions of politicians I like to maintain a healthy scepticism. Like me even a president is fallible, even if his transatlantic trips are a little more comfortable.

On the serious subject, perhaps many of you are unaware how unpopular the US has become under Dubbya's leadership, a situation fostered by the lefties of the Baghdad Broadcasting Corporation (BBC) and the general media portrayal of the average US citizen. <snip>

I'd like to take issue with that: Independant reports conducted after the war, showed that the BBC aired the most Pro-War articles of any UK media outlet. It also showed a fair amount of anti-war sentiment. Therefore things are fairly balanced.

Don't believe anything you hear on FoxNews.

As for the original topic. Yes that is totally disrespectful. As much as I don't like your president I would never disrespect your flag. If people feel like that about the US, what the hell are they doing in DisneyWorld. Disney is probably in the Top 5 brands you think of when you think America.

No offence but I spent many of the last few years working in media ops and the BBCs articles were always slanted to push their anti war agenda. ( I dont really have an issue with that they were playing to an element of British society after all, what I do is the hypocrasy that claims they were un biased). I did have the luxury of having access to many news channels to see how each covered the story Fox at one end Al Jazeera at the other. It is after all in the presentation not the number of minutes of air time.

If the BBC was so fair why did most of the fleet in the gulf change to Sky for its news coverage????

Something to Ponder

Heres one that did the rounds a while back...

It is time to elect a world leader, and your vote counts. Here's the scoop on the three leading candidates. Which of these is your choice?

A: Associates with wart heelers and consults with astrologists. He's had two mistresses, chain smokes and drinks 8 to 10 martinis a day.

B: Was kicked out of office twice, sleeps until noon, used opium in college and drinks a quart of brandy every evening.

C: Is a decorated war hero. He's a vegetarian, doesn't smoke, drinks an occasional beer and hasn't had any illicit affairs.

And these people were:
A) Franklin D. Roosevelt, B) Winston Churchill, and C) Adolph Hitler

These political rants kill me. The amount of propaganda parroting is truly depressing. Doesn't anyone read anymore? Can't anyone form their own opinions?

I'd like to defend the BBC here. During the INVASION, while every American network news station ran continuous pro-INVASION stories with American flags waving in the background, BBC America was airing both sides of the story without editorializing, which is what a news organization is supposed to do. As a result, their ratings went way up.

As far as this thread goes, can't we all just agree that the comments those jerks made about the flag coming down were out of bounds and move on?

I'm not sure how old this thread is. But that really es me off. Did you say that they were wearing a hat, with the American flag on it?
