Various Restaurant Questions

Remy is worth it.

Character interaction: they can tell how much you want and they'll adjust.

Tonga: Excellent, but too expensive to qualify as a dining plan snack.

Coral Reef - close to tank is good, but if you're in the very front other people (mostly kids) may crowd you.

best use of single credit on DDP - LeCellier now, but it's going to 2-credit after Dec. 31. Then I'd say Fantasmic dinner package at Mama Melrose, Boma or 'Ohana.

Right now it's looking like:

1.) Coral Reef
2.) Crystal Palace
3.) Chef Mickey's
4.) Cape May Cafe
5.) Boma

Seems about 98%. We all love it at the moment :sohappy:

For our December trip it's looking like

1.) 50's Prime Time Cafe (D)
2.) Trails End Restaurant (D) How is this place? Worth it?
3.) Kona Cafe (breakfast)
4.) Planet Hollywood? Grand Floridian Cafe (lunch or dinner)? Suggestions?

Avoid Planet Hollywood completely, if possible. Le Cellier is really good.

We've only gone to 50's once. I was sick at the time, and picked off my husbands plate and the waitress made a big deal out of it, scolding me for not ordering my own food and kept going on and on about it.

The whole thing turned me against the restaurant. Would like to try it again, but the memory won't go away......it was about 9 years ago, you'd think I'd get over it by now.

2.) How much of a show does your waitress put on at 50's Prime Time Cafe? Is it too much or very subtle? We're not the ones to be put in the center of attention (we avoid Whispering Canyon at all costs)

I just remember that they kept trying to feed my dad his veggies. hahaha I've heard from others though that if you tell the hostess or waitress that you just want to eat and not be messed with that they usually won't do too much. IMO though, the food isn't good enough to go there just for that and not for the atmosphere.

4.) What's better? Front row, up close and personal tank view at Coral Reef- or tiered view so you can see the whole tank?

We always like up close... the tank is HUGE so you can pretty much see everything anyway.

5.) Can I order the chocolate wave at Coral Reef as an underaged? Yes

7.) What, in your opinion, is the most bang for your buck with 1 dining credit? (pref. dinner only)

Le Cellier
Yak & Yeti
Trails End Buffet - in Fort Wilderness... all you can eat. We loved it because of the soup and fried chicken and ribs.

I loved Trails End. I also eat like a fat kid though. The ribs were good and I loved the soup... I eat tons of soup.

I was told the crunch chicken was good :lookaroun

What's so bad about it?

The crunch chicken is good. For me though, PH was another entry in the "Try It Once for the Experience" category of WDW restaurants...

Crunch Chicken is .... different. (It's chicken breaded with Cap'n Crunch) Nothing to write home about.

Planet Hollywood is more about the film and TV show props and less about the food. I found it noisy with poor service, passable food, and high prices.

It would make a better museum than a restaruant.

We're reconsidering this :/

What's a cheap, but still great dinner option for a Friday night ?

Awesome! The menu looks awesome, and it actually has some food I'm used to eating regularly! :D

Good to know it gets approval :sohappy:

We might look for an upgrade for 50's :lookaroun but nothing official

The two times I've been there, I found it overly noisy, to the point you really couldn't have any kind of conversation with others at your table, and the service and food just isn't good enough to warrant going through with everything. I also prefer park dining while I'm down there, with hotels near parks being a close second.

Thank you for the questions and times about Remy.

Just changed one of our ADR's (was Teppan Edo), for LCDF. We just watched the movie last night and I commented that it would be great if they had him at the resturant. :ROFLOL:

We were going to totally do Teppan but my parents don't like Japanese spices!! :/

And I watched Ratatouille a few days ago. What an amazing movie!! One of my all time favorites.

Good point, but park dining and even a lot of hotel restaurants can be expensive :lookaroun

We just always do the DDP now, so everything's paid up in advance, and if we didn't do it, we'd just go all CS with possibly 1-3 TS, and not go for the more expensive dishes. I really think you can find most of what Planet Hollywood offers for a similar price at many of the TS locations Disney has, but I may be wrong on that. (And on a quick check, it does appear that PH's prices are fairly similar to something like the Sci-Fi Diner) If I were going for a DTD theme restaurant, I think I would go with T-Rex or Rainforest. They seem to offer the same kind of items, and I couldn't imagine them having the same level of faults a PH, plus you can do the RF at AK too.

Those are expensive too and we are really sick of T-Rex and just did RFC.:lol:

I'm going to look into some more restaurants tonight (:

2.) How much of a show does your waitress put on at 50's Prime Time Cafe? Is it too much or very subtle? We're not the ones to be put in the center of attention (we avoid Whispering Canyon at all costs)

All depends on your server and your interaction. We had a server once who did a good job, but noticed that my DW wasn't all that into it, and so kinda played it low key. Still did things like gave us games, and was very attentive as a waitress, but then turned the corner and cranked it up for the party that had a bunch of rowdy kids.

3.) Chef Mickey's/Crystal Palace- how many characters do you come by and do they all mess with you or just take pictures? Related to question 2 about the center of attention...:lookaroun we're not character people- but we can put up with it if it means a great meal

Should be 4, Minnie, Mickey, Donald, and Goofy at CM and I believe Pooh, Tigger, Piglet, and Eeyore at CP. Once again, depends on you. If you just kinda sit there and say hi, they will look for a camera and pose behind you for a picture, and then the move on. But if you jump up, acting all excited, then they tend to play off of that. Our 1 yo nephew was meeting characters there for the first time (his parents choice, not our suggestion), and they would see him start to freak out, then back off and try to make it better before he had a total meltdown.

7.) What, in your opinion, is the most bang for your buck with 1 dining credit? (pref. dinner only)

Boma. No doubt. We also like Marrakesh, but no one else seems to, and it's not as much value for your credit. Out of pocket, probably Jiko.

The restaurant has just gone downhill. Check out their wikipedia entry http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Planet_Hollywood to see the number of locations they have closed. Prices started to go up, service started to go down, and now is really just a tourist trap. Looking at the existing locations will reflect that, only tourist type spots. They were even doing things like having a merch person come around with a tray of merch trying to sell you stuff while you were eating. And they had someone doing the same thing but taking your photo. A picture of me stuffing my face is something I really will want to keep. At least at CRT it has Cinderella in the pic so it is special.

Is it bad food? Ehh, not necessarily, but it's also not something to write home about. Nothing fancy, and the theming is kinda old at this point. Most of the stuff in PH still seems to be from when they first opened. And alot of it is from what would probably be thought of as B grade movies now. Look at "Jenny" in their lagoon area at DtD, last I saw it it needed serious TLC, was just shabby.

Those are expensive too and we are really sick of T-Rex and just did RFC.:lol:

I'm going to look into some more restaurants tonight (:

The counter service at Wolfgang Puck's is pretty good and cheap, and the regular TS isn't bad either. The second floor upscale option is a bit pricey. HoB is also decent in my book, but I happen to like blues and the style of food they serve.

In WDW ? Good luck (with the cheap part)

If you are in the DtD area, Raglin Road or Wolfgang Puck's Express are both good.

The Turf Club over at SSR (across the river) is also solid. Decent food, decent price. It's nothing special, but there really is nothing bad about it either. It has to be one of the most overlooked restaruants on WDW property.

I really wouldn't pick one of them either, but they're the two that immediately came to my mind from DTD that are a theme restaurant like PH. And comparing prices from the menus posted at All Ears, there's pretty much no difference between the price at PH and the other two, at least as far as I could see, they're all pretty expensive.

Looks like we're saving Chef Mickey's for another time since we feel Crystal Palace is very similar- so it's looking like we will replace that with Garden Grill at Ecpot!

I've always wanted to eat hear, and any excuse to go back to Epcot- and specifically the Land pavillion is okay with me (:

What does WDWMagic think of Garden Grill?
