This is the first time I am going to Disney with a family of my own. There will be my husband, myself, and our daughters (ages 2 & 4 at time of travel). We will be visiting in October and can afford the value resorts for five nights, my question is which one is the best? Is one better than another? Does one have more space or bigger beds? Our oldest daughter LOVES everything Disney as well!

I'm so excited for you and your family! I love it when I hear of a family getting to enjoy Disney World for the first time together. All of the Value resorts are fun, but the Art of Animation is usually the favorite. They have the Little Mermaid standard rooms, as well as the Lion King, Cars & Finding Nemo themed Family Suites. The suites are bigger than the standard rooms, but are all adorable. Your girls will enjoy how the rooms are decorated. Are you planning on doing the Mickey's Not So Scary Halloween Party too?

Art of Animation and Pop Century are the best, though you may want to go with Pop Century. AofA is mainly family suites, and there are very few of the Little Mermaid rooms, which are the size that you would be looking for. If you stay at Pop Century, you are more likely to get a deal on the room, such as the free QS dining plan or a percentage off the room. AofA does have nicer pools and is definitely more "Disney" overall, so if you're willing to shell out a little extra for it, go for it, but if money is an issue, you'd be better off with Pop. What you could do is book a room at the hotel of your choice, then as it gets closer, watch for the deals and jump on the deal as soon as you see it (just call Disney and have them switch you over).

I would not do any of the All Stars, especially if you plan on taking the buses. Pop and AofA are newer, so they're nicer, and they each have their own buses, whereas All Stars tend to share buses, and with two little ones, you'll need good bus service unless you have a car. I stayed at Pop last year, and as I looked over at the mass of people at the All Star bus stops, thought how glad I was that I was at Pop and not an All Star.

We were leaning towards Pop Century because art of animation is pricier. We are trying to save money on the hotel so that we have more to spend on other things. :) I didn't know the all stars were separate buses from Pop Century, so that makes it even better! When does the Mickey's halloween run?

Value for a family of 4? Pop Century hands down.

However...

Have you considered renting point in DVC to get a bigger room? 5 nights with weekend in Oct to rent a studio (I picked 10/7-10/12 as dates) at OKW is $812 total while to stay at PoP is $702 total. For $110.00 You'd get a bigger room with much bigger bathroom and a kitchenette with coffee maker, fridge, toaster and microwave for easy in room breakfasts. Oh, and a balcony! Great pools and fun laid back key west theme.

I mention this because I and a friend went with friends (mom dad with 2 kids) We stayed in a lock off connecting room at PoP and the four of them were kinda cramped in the room there.

I would recommend AoA over the others. The suites are the best, but there's nothing value about their price.
I will be staying there again in May. Two of our party will be in the Mermaid rooms and three of us will be in the suites. We stayed at POP last summer for the first and last time. The bathrooms are bigger, but the rooms are old and dated and not as clean as AoA which is a must for me. Both have good food courts. AoA has better pools. POP is less expensive than AoA since the Mermaid rooms are never discounted and POP rooms are almost always discounted. If theme and cleanliness are important, then I would suggest AoA.

Truth!
Also the reason why we now have a DVC addiction after years of staying at POP and plan on buying resale this May.

The Pop Century is a fun resort too. Your girls will love all of the bright colors & super large toys there. The dates for Mickey's Not So Scary Halloween Party 2015 haven't been released yet, but they are usually on numerous days in September & October.

I've done both Pop and All-Star Movies and liked them both. My son enjoyed the Toy Story wing that we stayed at in AS Movies. Don't let the limited bus service sway your decision too much. It's true that the All-Stars may share a bus (especially in the morning or slower periods), at peak times each resort has their own bus. At closing time at the parks I've seen large crowds for Pop waiting as long or longer as the AS resorts for multiple buses to take them back. AoA is newer and has a lot to offer a family too. End of the day it comes down to how much time you'll be spending at the resort vs. the park.
